As the fourth quarter marches on, and the end of the year grows closer, this week felt like an early exclamation on the year.
Investors have been waiting for signs of a pivot and this week’s price action seemed to imply that they finally got the message.
Although, one could argue that the market simply heard what they wanted to hear.
Both stocks and bonds rallied big on the news of another Fed pause and after disappointing employment data.
The 3-days between the two announcements showcased the biggest 3-day moves all year for multiple assets, including the best 3-day rally in bonds in a dozen years.
It was also the worst 3-days for the dollar in 2023. Correlation or coincidence?
Brent Johnson and Jon Kutsmeda breakdown the data and discuss the markets reaction, including why investors seem to be tone-deaf to what the Fed is actually saying about the potential for rate cuts.
Who wins in this game of chicken, the frenzied front-runners or the fit-to-be-tied Fed?
