Most yoga teachers tell me they believe that learning anatomy is hard. Conversations for Yoga Teachers
In this episode, you’ll walk away with a plan of action to help you up-level as a yoga teacher. As this episode is being recorded in December, 2024, it’s a great time to set new goals for your development as a yoga teacher for next year. However, the goals you’ll discover when you listen to this episode are timeless and you can experiment with them any time of the year. The episode begins with a description of “glowing up” and how that resonated with me as the source of the goals that you’ll hear about when you listen. I then go on to share a re-cap of the prior episode, Episode 326, where I interviewed Helene Whitfield, the Chief Visionary Officer of the newly formed G.O.Y.A, the Global Online Yoga Association. I wanted to be sure if you missed it, you took the time to listen because it’s really a one-of-a-kind conversation that dispels many of the misconceptions about what it means to be a Registered Yoga Teacher via Yoga Alliance. It also gives you a chance to learn about GOYA as another resource you can use to help you learn and grow. I then share a mindset lesson designed to empower you and support you in teaching the way you want, rather than trying to please the students in your class. While it might seem counterintuitive, it truly is the path to confident teaching. You’ll then hear the 6 “glow-up” goals for 2025 and I’ll walk you through each one with examples. Action steps from this episode: There's a new opportunity for you: The Yoga Teacher Confidence Club. This monthly membership will allow you to access exclusive workshops and trainings that I’ll host each month, along with special training guides, private videos and audio lessons and more. Doors open 12/16/24 and when you take join for just $27/month, you’ll get a bonus of free access to my Mindset Method course-regularly priced at $444! To join the Club, use this link: CLICK HERE Next, download the free guide to confident yoga teaching HERE: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/free-guide-steps-to-confident-teaching/ Next, DM me “Walk and Talk video” and I’ll send it to you. In this week’s episode, you’ll learn more about the Walk and Talk technique of teaching yoga and with this video, you’ll learn how to experiment with this in your classes. One more thing: If you watch the episode on You Tube, leave a question or comment so the video gets more reach and more yoga teachers can discover it! 1:32:36In today’s episode, you’ll meet Helene Whitfield, Chief Visionary Officer with the newly formed Global Online Yoga Association, or GOYA. Use the coupon code CHANGE to access your first year of membership for free. URL for people to access first year free: https://globalonlineyogaassociation.org/ya-exclusive-offer-complimentary/ COUPON CODE: CHANGE Find out more about Helene below: Helene Whitfield ECYT500, CCYT, CPYT, CYYT, CRYT As a yogi with a visionary spirit, I have combined my love for mindful practices and my business acumen to create GOYA. With over two decades in the health and wellness industry, my mission has been to cultivate spaces where everyone can find their flow. My leadership has steered GOYA from a concept to a global association for teachers, schools and practitioners. Over the last 15 years, navigating the intricate and frequently perplexing realm of yoga education standards and alliance bodies, I've encountered numerous challenges and frustrations. These experiences led me to deeply consider and envision what my fellow yoga educators and teachers genuinely require from their membership organization. As a mother and a wife, my journey took a dramatic turn during the pandemic, battling breast cancer and facing the lack of guidance and support from the very organizations meant to provide these to their members. This challenging period crystallized the vision of GOYA. Determined to rewrite the narrative on what a yoga education and teacher credentialing association should embody, I stand here ready to turn a new page. As a yoga teacher, a yoga teacher trainer, and an avid volunteer for global causes, I have nurtured this dream for many years. I am overjoyed to see this vision come to life and thrilled that you are part of this movement for change. 59:09Quick recap Karen Fabian, host of "Conversations for Yoga Teachers," discussed common scenarios in yoga classes and offered approaches to handle them, emphasizing the importance of understanding one's teaching style and adapting it to suit individual students. She covered topics such as maintaining confidence, preparing well, and focusing on effective communication and cues during classes. Karen also addressed professional boundaries, handling unexpected situations, and encouraged teachers to explore different teaching methods while staying true to their intentions. Next steps • Yoga teachers can experiment with one of the discussed scenarios in their classes over the next 2 weeks and share with Karen via Instagram DM if they wish. • Interested teachers can send a DM to Karen on Instagram requesting the cues training video. • Teachers interested in learning the "walk and talk" technique can send a DM to Karen on Instagram to find out how to get started with this approach. • Listeners can download the free "Concepts in Movement" PDF from the link in Karen's Instagram bio, @barebonesyoga • Teachers interested in enrolling in Karen's Yoga Anatomy Blueprint Learning Program can take advantage of the new payment plan before January 1, 2025 and get started for just $367! Summary Handling Yoga Class Scenarios In this episode, Karen Fabian, the host of "Conversations for Yoga Teachers," discusses common scenarios that occur in yoga classes and offers approaches to handle them. She emphasizes the importance of understanding one's own teaching style and not being afraid to adapt it. Karen also introduces a new format for the show, where she demonstrates the content at the beginning to ensure the listener knows what to expect. She encourages listeners to share their experiences via DM on Instagram @barebonesyoga if any of the scenarios resonate with them. Dealing With Negative Feedback in Yoga Karen shared a story she saw on TikTok about a Yoga teacher in Chicago who shared that someone, a student, publicly ranked her favorite teachers based on their classes. Karen expressed her thoughts about this and emphasized that teachers can't control how others perceive their classes and shouldn't be worried about negative feedback. Instead, they can focus on teaching their best. Maintaining Confidence in Teaching Karen discussed the importance of being prepared and confident in teaching, regardless of the students' backgrounds or levels of experience. She emphasized the need to stick to a well-prepared sequence and not be swayed by unexpected situations or student reactions. Karen also shared a hypothetical scenario where a teacher encounters a class full of new faces with varying levels of experience, and advised against changing the planned sequence on the spot. She stressed the importance of maintaining a non-reactive mindset and focusing on one's own preparation and delivery. Adapting to Student Needs in Yoga Karen emphasized the importance of adapting to the needs of individual students in a yoga class. She suggested that teachers should not feel obligated to change their prepared sequences unless they can easily do so. Instead, they should focus on helping students who are struggling by getting off the mat and walking around to provide clear cues. Karen also recommended using action-oriented phrases to effectively teach a mixed-level class. Accessible Yoga and Teacher Intentions Karen discussed her cueing method and its application in teaching yoga. She emphasized the importance of making classes accessible to students of varying levels of experience and flexibility. Karen suggested that teachers can focus on offering modifications to make postures more accessible, rather than presenting advanced variations that may not be suitable for all students. She also encouraged teachers to be intentional about the type of yoga they present, aligning it with their vision. Karen concluded by urging teachers to reflect on whether their classes are a reflection of their true intentions or merely a replication of what they were trained to do. Understanding Yoga Styles and Confidence Karen discussed the importance of understanding the style of yoga and the class setup when covering for another teacher. She emphasized the need to familiarize oneself with the regular teacher's class before taking on the subbing role. Karen also highlighted the need to avoid putting oneself down when covering a class, as it's a service to the students. She stressed the importance of being confident in one's own teaching abilities and not comparing oneself to others. Maintaining Professional Boundaries in Teaching Karen shared a personal anecdote about a time when she had to substitute teach a popular class, highlighting the importance of maintaining professional boundaries with students. She emphasized that a teacher's role is to focus on the practice, not their personal relationships with students. Karen also discussed the issue of students leaving class early, advising against taking it personally and instead focusing on sending them off with positive thoughts. She stressed that students' actions are often driven by their own issues, not the teacher's performance. Adapting Teaching Methods for Students Karen emphasized the importance of adapting teaching methods to suit individual students. Karen also discussed the issue of cues not working during a class, suggesting that teachers can revert to clear, short action phrases and spend more time observing students to correct any misalignments. She offered to help teachers who want to improve their teaching style through a direct message on Instagram. Adapting Teaching Methods for Students Karen discussed the importance of adapting teaching methods to the needs of students. She emphasized the value of observing students and adjusting cues in real-time, as this helps students feel seen and learn better. Karen also shared her personal experience of feeling called out during yoga practice and suggested that sharing cues to the room versus a specific student is very effective. Empowering Yoga Teachers Karen emphasized the importance of feeling confident teaching yoga classes. She stressed the need for teachers to be aware of their sequence and not be swayed by special requests from students. She encouraged teachers to explore different teaching methods and styles, and to not be constrained by traditional norms. Karen's goal is to empower teachers to be the kind of yoga instructors they truly want to be, rather than being driven by consumer expectations. Final thoughts Karen ended the episode by encouraging listeners to experiment with the new approaches over the next two weeks and share their experiences via Instagram DM. She also offered a free PDF on her Instagram page, titled "Concepts in Movement," and a new payment plan for her program, The Yoga Anatomy Blueprint Learning Program, offering a discounted rate of $367 to get started, with 5 more similar payments after that. This offer is good until the end of 2024. Links: www.barebonesyoga.com https://barebonesyoga.thinkific.com/courses/blueprint-learning-program https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/concepts-in-movement/…

What does transformation look like for a yoga teacher when confidence starts to build? Well, for Mindy Horgan, you’ll hear in her own words what that looks like. Mindy is an experienced and dedicated nurse and is also a yoga teacher. Her background as a nurse in the medical field gives her a solid basis for her understanding of the body and she wanted to learn how to leverage what she knew in a way that would help her be more confident in her teaching. When she enrolled in my program, The Yoga Anatomy Blueprint Learning Program, we began by having her go through the online course part of the program and then after 3 weeks, met for our first coaching call. This is part of each teacher’s experience in the program and on that first call, teachers have a chance to ask questions and bring all the pieces of what they’re learning together. Mindy’s call was filled with so many “light bulb moments” that I wanted to share it as an example of what’s possible for teachers when they take some time to build a foundation of anatomy knowledge. Have you ever thought about including meditation or guided imagery in your teaching? Maybe you’ve wanted to do it but you’re not sure how to include or what you’d say. Well, this week, tune in for yoga teacher Kelly Smith’s conversation with me because we take a deep dive into how to integrate this into your classes. Kelly tells her origin story as a yoga teacher and shares her journey of building her own yoga teacher training program and yoga business. Here’s a bit of background on Kelly: Kelly Smith is a globally renowned yoga and meditation teacher, E-RYT 500 /YACEP, founder of Yoga For You, and host of the chart-topping Mindful in Minutes podcast and its spin-off, Meditation Mama. With over 6 million downloads across 181 countries, Kelly’s wildly successful show and accessible but powerful approach to mindfulness have solidified her as a rising star in the world of yoga and meditation. Kelly was first drawn to yoga as a teenager, when she saw the therapeutic mental and physical benefits the practice had on her mom during her battle with breast cancer. Several years and over 8,000 hours of teaching later, what began as a modest studio in the rural Midwest has evolved into Yoga for You, a location independent yoga and meditation school that has served thousands of students located all through the US, Canada, and the UK. Kelly specializes in the non physical limbs of yoga and is best known for her master trainings and workshops in meditation, restorative yoga, and yoga nidra, as well as her international yoga and mindfulness retreats. Kelly’s teaching philosophy is grounded in her belief that yoga and meditation is not one-size-fits-all; she encourages her students and listeners to find their own personal practice, listen to their bodies, and find inner joy by accessing their most authentic selves and owning their power. You can connect with Kelly on Instagram at @yogaforyouonline .…

Patty’s work today, while it still includes working with the studios and training teachers, focuses primarily on coaching leaders. She helps people find their power and most effective and authentic way of being, using coaching techniques she honed while working for many years to develop the teaching staff as well as in her work running several other businesses prior to Down Dog Yoga. Patty and I get into a conversation about what holds people back from being their best self, what kinds of fears get in the way of all of us being happy and doing what we love and shares different techniques that we all can use to improve our lives and grow our impact. Conversations for Yoga Teachers
Today I’m going to share a quick primer on how muscles work. This can be a point of confusion for teachers so it’s helpful to go through it. It’s also something that gets referred to a lot in teaching with words like “strengthen” or “lengthen” or phrases like “contract your (fill in the blank)” so it’s really important that you understand some of the essentials around the mechanics of how muscles work. I want you to be confident in what you’re sharing in class and one of the best ways to build your confidence is to really know the mechanics and detail behind what you’re saying. In this episode, I refer to my free training on cues. You can get that here: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/yoga-cues-evaluation/…

35:47I’ve had a few conversations in my anatomy Facebook group lately that have highlighted a mindset or approach in the yoga industry.. that of making statements regarding what’s happening in the body, especially as it relates to dynamic movement, before you’ve build an understanding of the fundamentals of anatomy. This is quite common and often shows up as questions about cues and when we work backwards just to simply try to understand the basics of what’s happening, that basic knowledge isn’t yet there. However, there’s no need to worry! The good news is 1- you can build that knowledge and 2- I’ve given you a template so you can review those cues and see what you can come up with for a rationale. This is a great way to hear how anatomy can easily blend into your classes easily and without overwhelming students. This offer is ONLY good this week, until 9/13/19 and the class is only $19.99. 1:04:24Hello, and WELCOME to Conversations for Yoga Teachers! I’m your host, Karen Fabian and this is EPISODE 34! For today’s episode, we’re going to talk to a yoga teacher, Kahlia Murray. She and I met via social media, as she’d asked a few questions in my anatomy workgroup on Facebook. Her insight into her own teaching as a new teacher struck me as so healthy and positive, that I thought it would be a great idea to have her on the podcast. We don’t often have time to talk to each other about the kinds of things that challenge us, inspire us and our go-forward dreams and this episode is all about that. Also, listen close to this episode’s beginning because in it, I share with you how you can get a special discount to my wellness event, The Bare Bones Yoga Urban Wellness Saturday. This event is Saturday October 5th and registration link is right here: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/the-bare-bones-yoga-urban-wellness-saturday/ NOW because you’re a podcast listener, I can give you a special discount. 26:45For today’s episode, we’re going to talk about identity. I know, you’re thinking we’re supposed to be talking about anatomy, as that’s my specialty. But if you’ve listened to the podcast for a while, you know I like to build in some teacher development topics as what’s the point of learning anatomy if you’re too freaked about about teaching because there’s all this inner turmoil? It’s a dual process; learn the information but also grow as a person, and together, transformation happens! Now, one of the things I’ll be sharing on the podcast is your special invitation to my October event called “The Urban Wellness Saturday.” This is a full day event, devoted to wellness and health by offering you a chance to move through yoga and a short fitness session, meditate with a local expert from the Cambridge Insight and Meditation Center and hear from speakers in science and nutrition. The day gets rounded out with healthy food, an inspiring speaker at the end of the day and more. Because you’re a podcast listener, you get a special VIP rate. 25:29Ever wonder why it’s hard for people to learn anatomy? There are a host of reasons but one may be that teachers just feel they can’t learn it! I often hear, “I’m not good at science” or “anatomy is just such a big topic, I could never learn it all!” Well, in this episode, I tackle that mindset and shed light on it because in order for us to learn anatomy, we have to bring up any biases we have against our learning it. I also give you a 10 Step Plan (I review 3 of the 10 steps) to help you learn anatomy. In the episode, I give you access to a free download that lists them all out. You can get that download here: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/ten-steps-to-learning-anatomy/ Thanks for listening and please comment with your thoughts!…

45:32For today’s episode, I want you think about beliefs that you have about teaching. Close your eyes, go deep inside and think about what you believe to be true as a teacher. It could be about money, or poses, or getting a teaching gig, or personality or any number of things. We’re going to talk in detail about beliefs in general and then dive into some beliefs that teachers hold that when you break them down, don’t hold water. Now, if you missed episode 2, go ahead and listen to that one next. Because in that one, I outlined self limiting beliefs that teachers had. Today, it’ll be a mix of things but along the same lines. Now, why does this all matter? Because if we don’t examine our beliefs, we will always be operating from the same limited space. From the same limited mindset. Beliefs can be something we picked up from someone else and often are things that limit us in taking action, for instance. So this is why, in the context of teaching, if you want to be a successful teacher, with opportunity and a way to reach more students, you must examine your beliefs and make sure they are not holding you back! Now, I know this podcast often touches on anatomy. Heck, it’s often all about anatomy because that’s my specialty. But we cannot ignore the aspect of mindset in teaching. Teaching is an expression of our personality and our beliefs so whether we teach with a focus on anatomy or something else, if we’re not growing personally, we missing out on a wonderful, necessary way to grow as a teacher. In the podcast, I talk about a download on myofascial release. Grab it here: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/understanding-basic-concepts-about-myofascial-release/…

20:55Hello, and WELCOME to Conversations for Yoga Teachers! I’m your host, Karen Fabian and this is EPISODE 30! This is just a quick episode, designed to spark conversation about one of the mainstay, fundamental poses we do in almost every class: Warrior 1. Think about it. Have you ever taught a regular flow class and NOT included a Warrior 1? Probably not. It’s important to understand what’s happening in the pose and have some alternatives in your back pocket that you can offer up. However, it’s even MORE helpful if you know the anatomy behind WHY the pose is such a challenge. For that, you’ll have to listen to the podcast. Now, on the podcast, I mention that THIS WEEK ONLY my flagship training program on anatomy called YOUR YOGA ANATOMY BLUEPRINT is open for enrollment. I tell you more in the episode and to see all the details, click here: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/your-yoga-anatomy-blueprint-2019-summer-launch/ Happy listening!…

1:23:25WELCOME to Conversations for Yoga Teachers! I’m your host, Karen Fabian and this is EPISODE 29! One of the things I love about hosting my podcast is I get to interview really interesting and innovative teachers and today is no exception. I was introduced to Trina Altman through her thoughtful posts on social media. While they were focused on anatomy, which is my focus of teaching as well, they presented yoga in a new and different way. Trina, to me, is someone who is not willing to just “go with the flow” and do what everyone else is doing. And while you might think it’s about “being different just to try to be popular” nothing could be further from the truth. Her keen eye towards the practice, backed by her knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics, allows her to question “the way things have been presented” and give it a fresh new approach, all with the overall goal of helping as many students as possible access the practice as well as teachers and helping them learn new ways to present it and the WHY’s behind these different approaches (so important!!) Trina’s background is as follows: She received her training through STOTT Pilates® and is an E-RYT 500. She has created two programs: Yoga Deconstructed® and Pilates Deconstructed® to show teachers how to take an interdisciplinary approach to foster an embodied understanding of yoga and Pilates in relation to modern movement science. You can find out more about her here on her website, www.trinaaltman.com Get ready for a great conversation and carve out some time because this one runs a bit longer and is full of interesting conversation!…

42:16In some of my past episodes, I reviewed cues for different yoga poses to give you a sense of both the anatomy and the physical action cues you might share. If you missed those, they were episodes 17, 18 and 19. So, I’m back today to run through 3 more poses that fall on the more “challenging” side of things versus some of the other episodes that covered fundamental poses. Please keep in mind that what’s challenging to one person is not to another so things are always relative. Plus, it is not my intention to suggest that you add these poses to your teaching, only that we have a chance to discuss them to see how we might teach them. Now, I’m recording this episode on July 12th, 2019 and starting next week, I’ll be offering a totally FREE video training on anatomy to my VIP mailing list. This will cover many of the fundamentals of shoulder anatomy so it’s SO applicable to teaching. If you’re wondering what the shoulders do in different poses, are looking for easy ways to understand the muscles at work, ALL in an effort to give better and CORRECT!! Cues, you must be IN on this training. Now, it’s not on social media and will ONLY be released to those on my VIP list.
