Hi everyone,
Please welcome with me Angela Geeves from New Zealand. Angela lived in Cambodia from 2016 to 2020, where she worked as an English teacher, and returned home just as the world’s borders closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this episode, I sit down with Angela, to explore her transformative journey of living and teaching in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Angela shares how an unexpected life implosion in her early 30s—sparked by a breakup and challenging circumstances—pushed her to take a leap of faith and move abroad. Armed with an eight-year-old teaching qualification and an open heart, she arrived in Cambodia with little more than a four-week volunteer gig lined up.

Angela talks about her first teaching role, the culture shock of navigating a system where bribes determined student success, and her frustrations with a "no-fail" education approach. Despite these challenges, she found deep joy in the warmth and generosity of the Khmer people. From being treated like a celebrity in her first school to being welcomed into rural family homes by strangers, Angela recounts heartfelt stories of connection, resilience, and community.

She also reflects on the unique mindset of many Khmer people, who are deeply rooted in their communities and focused on making a difference locally rather than seeking opportunities abroad. Even after experiencing setbacks like having her phone stolen, Angela emphasizes how safe and welcoming Cambodia felt to her.

Tune in for Angela’s inspiring advice for those considering a move to Cambodia: approach the country with respect, an open mind, and an open heart, and you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable experiences.
