Soteriology: the study of religious doctrines of salvation.
Salvation is a tricky subject for modern liberal religionists. The doctrine of Universalism, now an integral part of our Unitarian-Universalist faith, was long considered a major heresy. In a liberal-religious context, which removes fire and brimstone from the equation, how do we understand salvation and forgiveness? Why should we live a moral life and to whom are we accountable?
