Episode Breakdown: Your Essential Guide to Winter Weddings
Wedding tip: Celina's tip this week is stolen directly from a real couple, Mick and Erin! You choose four or five people close to you, give them each a word, then ask them to write a blessing based on that word to read aloud during the ceremony. The words could be love, friendship, loyalty, family, spirituality, kindness, forgiveness, adventure, creativity, etc. This is a really nice, and low-pressure way to invite friends and family members to put their own stamp on the ceremony, and orchestrate a fun surprise for you and your partner to look forward to on the day!
Main topic: Today's episode is all about winter weddings, which we're both huge fans of! While we do love to get caught up in the magic of festive celebrations, we're also hugely interested in the practical side of getting married in winter. Our top winter wedding tips include advice on selecting a venue, availing of off-peak rates (this one comes with a hefty disclaimer - few guests will be able to attend your December 24th wedding!), choosing decorations, and working with your photographer to get the best possible portraits, even on one of the shortest days of the year!
Wedding dilemma: A listener writes, “My other half is Polish and we’re getting married in Ireland. Everyone attending the wedding speaks fluent English, except for my fiancé’s parents, who have no English at all. They are quite conservative and can be hard to please at the best of times, so getting them involved is tricky but I don’t want them to feel lost or left out on the day. Beyond reading a poem in Polish, or lighting the candles, we can't think of anything they can do on the day. I don't want to make everyone sit through a ceremony or speeches that are twice as long while everything is translated. Any ideas for how to manage bilingual weddings, or do you think we are overthinking it?” The advice we're offering this listener include having signage in both languages, having ceremony booklets in both languages, having a bilingual friend or relative sit beside the future in-laws to translate, and researching Polish wedding traditions to incorporate into the day.
Something to do when you're not planning your wedding: In this episode, Celina's recommending planning a fun weekend away with a pal!
