This week’s episode is a Unicorns at the Movies! We are reviewing the Kemp Powers movie, One Night in Miami, directed by Regina King. This particular movie is one of the action points of this month’s Toolkit (There’s still time to read up and participate in this month’s toolkit. All the information is located on our Instagram page @biracialunicorns).

We both enjoyed watching this fictional interpretation of true events that happened on the night of February 25th when a young and newest heavy weight champion of the world, Cassius Clay, the sports icon Jim Brown, the singing sensation Sam Cook, and civil rights activist Malcolm X spend a night together at the Hampton Hotel in Miami. This movie was beautifully directed and perfectly cast with the talents of Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Gorgee, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr. In this episode expect to hear:

  • A brief summary of the movie
  • Our overall reaction of the movie
  • A bit more background information on writer Kemp Powers and director Regina King
  • Our thoughts on the relationships on conflicts between the main characters (especially the characters of Malcolm X and Sam Cook).
  • Our views on the portrayal of Malcolm X in this movie and how it differs from past depictions
  • Why we thought this movie was significant to watch during Black History Month.

We would love to hear your thoughts on One Night in Miami, so please feel free to reach out with your review OR if you have a movie in mind you’d like us to watch and review on the show, let us know (our information is down below).

In this episode, we also reference a previous Unicorns at the Movies episode about the film American Son. You can check it out at https://bit.ly/3ungZQb.

Alongside Unicorns at The Movies, we also have Dani and Dameca Get Mad at the World! And this week ties too perfectly with our Black History month theme. A Montessori school in Utah became news worth when the parents of the school requested their children opt out of the Black History Month curriculum this year…oh you’ll just have to listen to know how we REALLY felt about that.

We NEEDED something to end the show on a higher note after that last segment, and this week’s HAPPY PLACE will hopefully put you in a better mood. Hint* - Sometimes you need to spit hot fire and sometimes you got to cool off the internet.
