Friday the 13th - The Scream Test
Manage episode 406421755 series 3443712
In this horror film podcast episode, host and film critic Rachel Pullen is joined by her friend Pete to discuss one of her favourite films of all time - Friday the 13th. One of the most iconic horror movies of all time, this is a must-listen for all fans of film reviews, filmmaker interviews, film history and more.
Here's a breakdown about Friday the 13th in case you haven't seen it:
In 1980's slasher flick "Friday the 13th," we meet a group of young counselors prepping Camp Crystal Lake for a grand reopening. The idyllic scene hides a dark past: 20 years ago, a young camper drowned, and two counselors were murdered shortly after. Undeterred, the counselors - including Alice (the responsible one), Pamela (party girl), and smoker pothead Bill - settle in, unaware they're being stalked.
The killings begin subtly. A counselor fooling around gets speared. Another taking a skinny dip vanishes. Panic rises as the body count climbs. The remaining counselors suspect each other, but the true culprit is the vengeful Mrs. Voorhees, fueled by the drowning of her son Jason at the camp years ago.
Picking them off one by one, Mrs. Voorhees becomes increasingly unhinged. Alice, the lone survivor, stumbles upon a horrifying truth: a deformed Jason, presumed dead as a child, is alive and the real killer (a twist revealed in the shocking final moments). Alice and a final counselor face Mrs. Voorhees in a bloody confrontation, but just as she's about to finish Alice, Jason appears, killing his own mother in a fit of rage. With Jason seemingly gone, a traumatized Alice is left alone by the silent lake.
The film, inspired by horror hits like "Halloween," wasn't a critical darling, but its low budget and strategic marketing made it a sleeper hit, launching a long-lasting slasher franchise. It established tropes - scantily clad teenagers, jump scares, and a masked killer - that continue to influence horror to this day.
