The Virtual Ocean is the “Let’s Listen” vaporwave discovery podcast.
What is vaporwave?
Vaporwave is a music genre (and internet meme) that appropriates mood music from the past while presenting subtle takes on modern-day consumerist culture. The genre has drawn many passionate listeners with its powerful immersion, ambiguous commentaries, and the genre's unique ability to amalgamate with the memes created as its byproduct.
It's a genre with several subgenres that are extremely distinct from one another in sound and style; and yet evoke similar archetypal ideas that say, either explicitly or implicitly, a lot about the modern world.
It's also very, very, aesthetic.
In each episode, we listen to tracks that make up genre and give our thoughts, emotions, and commentary on them.

The world will never be the same.

With this COVID epidemic, the old lifestyles we had in the past are gone, and if we do get them back, we’ll forever be carrying the scars of what this changed world has left us.

This feeling is perfectly captured in the this week’s album, Mission Indigo’s “The Final Exhibit.”

This album carries themes of finality; bringing you to the end of the old world and an arising of the new.

While this theme is something we’ve covered in past albums, like telepath’s “to the future” and “building a better world”, this album takes the approach of more traditional 80s sounds, all of which are done tastefully - utilizing smart arrangements and evoking potent emotions.
