Women would rather accept the “singles tax” than couple up. The “singles tax” — the higher costs that singles pay financially supporting themselves — recently rose to over $7,000, according to Zillow, but women would still rather be on their own. In the headlines on #Theupdate this Wednesday, convicted felon and New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez will resign from the Senate on Aug. 20 — a date that will likely ensure he gets to collect one final taxpayer-funded paycheck on his way out the door. A long-promised cellphone ban for New York City public schools could see students stashing their devices in $30 pouches bought by cash-strapped schools. And in Washington, Even though President Joe Biden won’t be on the ballot this November, voters still will be weighing his legacy. Biden will have an opportunity to make a case for his legacy — sweeping domestic legislation, renewal of alliances abroad, defense of democracy — tonight when he delivers an Oval Office address about his decision to bow out of the race and “what lies ahead.”
