Hello and welcome to the Paternoster Project, a podcast devoted to helping us pray the Scriptures Daily.
Today is Monday, April 8th and on this day we celebrate the Annunciation of our Lord to the Virgin Mary. In honor of this we will be reciting what I call a Pre-Tridentine Rosary. Accordingly, Our Scripture Meditation will be a Pre-Tridentine version of what is traditionally referred to as the Hail Mary which is based on two Biblical passages from the Gospel of Luke: Mary’s visitation from the Angel Gabriel and her subsequent visitation to her cousin Elizabeth. In addition to our Scripture Meditation we will end the Rosary by reciting what is known as the Magnificat or Song of Mary which can be found in Luke 1:46-55.
As always, let us begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Let us humbly confess our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Scripture Meditation(s):
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. - Pre-Tridentine Hail Mary
“… My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” - The Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55 ESV)
