MT #17- African Descendants in El Salvador? Afro-Latinos in El Salvador Speaking Their Truth
Manage episode 384991331 series 3505177
This was an amazing episode with Leslie Alvarenga Cuadra aka Queengwen31
When we think about El Salvador, all we see is travel content creators posting how amazing the country is. Great! But, there is also a different side of El Salvador that we may not know. The country of El Salvador claims that they have no existence of Africans in their country. This episode will debunk those myths and dive deeper into the social constructs of the country.
Afro-latinos or formely known as African descendants are alive and well in El Salvador. Their culture is visible of vibrant in certain parts of the country; yet most people do not have any history of them. The question, why does El Salvador deny the fact they were apart of the Transatlantic Slave Trade (although they were the third country in Central America to abolish slavery in 1825? Most african slaves were transported to the shores of El Salvador to work on cocoa and coffee plantations; but yet the country denies this history?
Did you know that in 1933 an immigration law was passed by General Hernandez Martinez to deny the entry of Africans, Irabs, Asians and other ethnicities into the country? Fast forward to 2023, we see similar patterns from a country that is beginning to be a go-to destination for most travelers.
El Salvador’s government has begun slapping a $1,130 fee on travelers from dozens of countries connecting through the nation’s main airport, amid U.S. pressure to help control migration flows to its southern borders.
