It was no mistake that Mary ventured into a hospital as part of her undergraduate premed training. All it took was one unprecedented morning in the emergency room that put her on a livesaving path to personal inquiry, unlearning, and healing of her childhood wounding.
She never allowed herself to process her own trauma and was deeply triggered in the presence of great pain and suffering. Because she hadn’t recognized, or embraced, her own suffering, how could she compassionately embrace anyone else’s?
