‘Matlock’ Gives Kathy Bates A Chance To Show Off Five Decades Of Acting Skills

Hey, if CBS can remake The Equalizer and recast the lead as a female, why not reboot Matlock with Kathy Bates as the title character? That’s exactly what they’ve done, with Bates taking on the role of lawyer “Matty Matlock,” who, like the original Andy Griffith character, has a knack for solving legal mysteries with flair and panache. Without giving too much of the premise away, however, there’s more to Bates’s character than meets the eye, and she’s putting on performances for everyone around her, whether it’s the partners she’s working with or the suspects and witnesses she’s grilling in her quest to solve the case. Cloaked in those performances is a lot of deception, and it would be difficult for a lot of actors to keep their stories straight. Bates, however, told us that, over the course of her 53-year screen career, she’s developed the necessary tools and feels right at home in all aspects of her character, both legal and personal. Matlock airs Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS, and episodes start streaming the following day on Paramount+.
