I have a process that will help you identify your #1 goal for the year, then I help you reframe the goal with a statement that feels good to you and then we create your blueprint for achieving the goal. Just the word goal can be repulsive to some people and then they resist creating any intention or doing new things. I would invite you to think about a goal any way you want. You don't even have to call it a goal, it could just be 'something I want to do this year.' We all have hopes and dreams and ideas about things we want. What are yours? Start there. Make a list. This episodes discusses the importance of doing the things that WORK to keep you drinking less or alcohol free. A lot of times, we start to feel good and we let the practices that work slip away, and that is when things can get away from us. I share a story of a small decision that helped me stay ahead of holiday stress, getting over-hungry and a cascade of events that can happen when we put our priorities and what is good for us last on the list. Staying ahead of it is critical during busy and stressful times. What is IT? It is feeling run-down, burnt out, overwhelmed, over-hungry, drained, or feeling thin. When we feel this way, we are susceptible to our old patterns of seeking comfort, ie ALCOHOL or food to comfort ourselves. And we know that relying on these things for comfort doesn't really work because we over-do it and then feel even worse. So we have to stay AHEAD of it by taking care of ourselves, slowing down and prioritizing our well being. Podcast rewind, this episode gives you permission to not feel obligated to do all the things around the holidays that you normally do 'just because it's family' or otherwise. I discuss how you have free will and autonomy as an adult to decide if you do things or not. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. And yes, some people won't like it and it's ok. If you do decide to do it even though you don't like it, own that it was still your decision to make. You will feel more empowered and better about being there than telling yourself you have to suck it up because it's what's expected of you. Learning how to start honoring yourself and doing things that are right for you is a process, take it slow, and watch how when you start honoring yourself, you feel better and will not need to escape with alcohol as much. This episode explores the idea that we need to 'let things go.' And the truth is it's hard to let things go, especially if you have been hurt or experienced painful things, like death, divorce, family estrangement and more. So, instead of letting go, we recommend you focus on healing and acceptance. This doesn't mean you allow bad things in your life to keep happening, it means we need to find a middle ground when you get triggered to soften the edges and accept your feelings instead of pushing them down and trying to force yourself to let it go, when really, that doesn't work. Things are feeling stressful right now for a lot of people. Hurricanes, election cycles, problems at home with kids or family and this can leave us feeling overly stressed, worn out and worried. This episode helps you with some tips on how to deal with extreme stress and difficult situations, which don't include alcohol. Drinking in response to deeply stressful situations isn't good for you or your nervous system in the long run. We need to be aware of our feelings during difficult times, our feelings are trying to get us to pay attention and take action. We also need to focus on what we CAN and are WILLING to do during these situations. Deciding on actions you can take and then focusing on that will help you feel less stressed and powerless. Focusing on simple things like drinking enough water, moving your body and 'healthier' ways to give your mind a break like books, tv, movies, games and more. The episode I share the news that a lovely man that I met while I was just beginning my journey to change my relationship with alcohol, has passed away. He owned an organic wine farm in Sicily called Agriturismo Tarantola. https://www.gorgodeldrago.it/en/ His name is Filippo Testa and he touched my life in a profound and deeply spiritual way. I visited his farm during my journey to stop over-drinking and I came home from that trip and wrote a podcast about the unconditional love that I found there on his farm and in Sicily. This podcast shares that original podcast I wrote and recorded back in 2018 along with 2 poems that Phillipo and I created together using piano music that the shared with us while we were on his farm. It is unbelievably beautiful and I wish everyone could have an experience like I did, then. His legacy will live on forever. I will never forget the impact he had on my life at such a special, transformative time. Say YES to your life. Share your sentiments with people who move you. Go on the adventure, see it, feel it, appreciate this one life you have to experience all the things. I recently led a small group of women on a challenging 8-mile hike during my Seattle Retreat and it was foggy at the peak. But, I quickly realized that the hike wasn't about the great views at the end, it was more about putting yourself in an opportunity to expand your discomfort and to grow and that the payoff will serve you LATER, maybe not right in that moment, but you will call on your skills that you learned during that hike for years to come. And that is the same way to approach any goal or change you want to make. My amazing client asked me this question and I thought it was so great that I did a podcast on it. Your feelings drive your behavior, so if you are wanting to make behavior changes, learning how to feel your feelings and understanding your feelings on a deeper level is crucial. This episode dives into the WHY we want to know how your feelings actually feel in your body. I'm talking about the physical sensations you get when you are having a feeling. The tightness you feel when you are anxious. The fiery hotness you feel when you are angry. The empty hollow feeling you feel when you are sad. The lightness you feel when you are happy. These are the sensations of your feelings. And if you can develop a skill of noticing and describing these sensations while they are happening, a couple things will happen. You can pause long enough to interrupt automatic behavior and prevent doing something you actually don't want to do like drink alcohol. You will get to know yourself and your like/dislikes and give yourself natural pleasures and be able to process feelings instead of numb or escape or over-work/do Tune in and hear all of this explained! If you've successfully cut back on how much you are drinking, even if it's just one extra day less or instead of 3 drinks you've been having 2 more often, you had to go through some discomfort to do that right? You had to process urges, manage your mind, say no more often, and all that isn't a walk in the park, it's UNCOMFORTABLE. When you move towards any goal you will have different levels of discomfort. The first level of discomfort is often the hardest but once you accomplish it and make some headway it becomes less uncomfortable and you can even settle into the new normal. It feels more natural, like you don't have to try as hard. Well, this episode I talk about up-leveling that discomfort and choosing to feel uncomfortable AGAIN to make more progress towards your goal. This episode dives in the problem of people in our lives who might say unsupportive comments about you cutting back or quitting alcohol. I explain WHY they might do this and how to navigate it if the person who is the offender is important to you. I also discuss our culture and the social pressure we experience when we are actively trying to change things. These things can be scary and make us not want to share and tell the truth about our drinking. But remember, this discomfort is temporary and you can get to a place where you aren't bothered by our heavy drinking society and other peoples thoughts and comments. Down the road, you will have established stronger boundaries, you will say no to doing things or being around people who don't feel supportive, you will move past this and have the true freedom you seek. Happy July, I am super excited about my 30-days of sober sunrise project I am doing this month at Carolina Beach, NC. You can read about it here, https://www.angelamascenik.com/blog I'll be updating it everyday. I'm celebrating 6 years of alcohol free lifestyle this summer and I wanted to do something big. This episode explains the project and the work involved in setting myself up to do it. It's not 'easy.' Just like stopping over-drinking isn't easy or changing any behavior we have been doing for years. And, I'd argue it shouldn't be easy. It should take effort, because that is what makes life interesting. The work you put into it is difficult, there are failures and obstacles along the way, but when you do the thing you have been wanting to, it makes all that work worth it. And maybe it shouldn't be easy for our kids either. We all want better lives for our kids and we want to infuse our wisdom of life experiences into them, so they don't make mistakes or struggle. But when we push too hard and get so upset when they don't do what we think they should, it causes us unnecessary discomfort and suffering, which is no fun. Life if full of challenges, and mistakes, and obstacles and that is how we learn. Friends, I have news, my sweet Edie girl dog has passed. This episode is an exploration of how I'm processing her passing and concepts that I use to make the grief and loss more bearable. I also discuss that the pain from loss is not linear and we need to let go of timelines. The most painful thing we can do is judge ourselves that 'we should be over' something when the grief pops through. My amazing client Rhiannon, generously offered to come on the podcast in exchange for a coaching session! She posted in our Alive AF! private Facebook group about needing coaching around summertime and how to make her self a priority while her kids are home and they have a lot going on. You MUST listen to this podcast immediately if summer time has you feeling like you can't possibly find time for yourself and your goals, you have any resentments towards family members, or you need a dose of inspiration. This was the question that she posted in the group, tune in and hear the coaching I gave her: ' #coaching I have been wanting to post but have just been so overwhelmed and busy. School has been out for almost 3 weeks and that always throws me into a tailspin. That and the fact that I have been traveling solo with my kids 8 out of the last 14 days. All my choice of course but I find it hard to find time for myself when this happens. Same old song and dance about putting everyone else’s needs above my own. I was wanting to set a goal for myself for June that I would find time to just do the basics daily; journal, plan, read, listen to a workshop, drink my water and walk. With my kids out of school and being around me so much I have a hard time finding privacy and time to be alone to do these things and I have learned that I really need that. I have been getting up early and somedays it’s great but somedays they get up early too and I get annoyed by that bc I feel like that’s my only time to be alone. I realize I’m judging myself for that last fact. Edit to add that I do see an improvement from last year, I had already started back to very regular drinking by now from the same issue. Ep 282, How to Protect Yourself From Over-drinking in the Future This episode I discuss the importance of doing what you can to protect yourself from over-drinking in the future. You might be someone who has made great progress in stopping the over-drinking. Now, you might be lacking on 'doing the work' that you did in the beginning to get where you are now. This episode encourages you to invest in your self-care even when things are going well. Stress and taking on too many things takes a toll on our well-being and if you aren't investing into yourself you can feel on the edge and if this goes on too long it can lead you to over-drink. Over-drinking doesn't usually happen because of one event in one given day, it builds over time and this episode helps you understand how you can protect yourself from over-drinking in the future by taking care of yourself today. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Noell L. Rowan to the podcast. Noell Rowan, Ph.D., LCSW, LCAS, CCS, ACSW is a clinician with more than three decades of experience in the field of social work. She has practiced in hospital, community, and private practice settings in Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, and provides clinical supervision for MSW students in North Carolina. After practicing for more than a decade, she returned to further her education and earned a Ph.D. in social work and has since authored more than 40 publications and participated on many teams of grants to expand her ability to focus on wellness in the areas of mental health, addictions, and spirituality. She has served in several university leadership roles building social work degree programs, was recruited to UNCW School of Social Work to join their leadership team and has resided on the beautiful coast of North Carolina since 2013. She teaches graduate students about practice skills, oversees the graduate addictions certification program, and enjoys making meaningful connections with people and fostering growth toward the highest potential. Noell considers it a high honor to work with people on their life journey, and seeks to collaborate and honor each person's path and way of viewing the world to navigate their concerns, process thoughts and feelings and recognize their strengths and solutions along the way. Our mind likes to make assumptions to save us energy and time. An assumption is a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Over-drinking is usually a sign that our mental health is in need of some help. Over-drinking is a symptom. For a lot of my clients, it's a symptom of stress, high levels of anxiety, overwhelm, loneliness, grief, big painful life changes or traumatic events like a high conflict divorce or a major medical diagnoses. Using alcohol as a way to cope is a sign that your mental health could use some support. It's not something to be ashamed of or to keep a secret. If you've been struggling with alcohol use and you identify as someone who is using alcohol as a way to cope (or another sign is, finding it very hard to stop automatic behavior and can't identify the cause of your over-drinking) it's time to get help. What does this even mean? Have you ever noticed how uncomfortable you get when you perceive other people feeling some sort of discomfort or negative feelings? If you have noticed this and then tried to 'make everyone feel better' or 'try to diffuse' a situation so the peace gets kept or whatever it is, how does this work out for you? Does it exhaust you, make you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or edgy? And then what do you do? Drink, eat, scroll, avoid, fight...or cause a bigger issue than what actually existed? Well, I happen to have been aware of myself being really uncomfortable and tight and edgy and grippy when I perceive some else's discomfort in a whole bunch of situations. And that sucks because when I feel that way, I immediately want to 'make it better' for them and that feels graspy and honestly it's a big energy suck AND it doesn't work. DANG IT. So that's my work this month. And I invite you to come along with me and choose something that is a big discomfort for you. Is it urges for alcohol, snacking at night or something else? What do you have a big discomfort over? The key to being more comfortable in this area is to ALLOW the initial discomfort you feel right now. This episode dives into what to do when someone you care about shares that they don’t think you need to cut back or wishes you wouldn’t cut back or dismisses your desire to quit or cut back. Mostly, when people dismiss your desire to cut back it’s just because they don’t want to cut back. They don’t want anything to change. So when you say you are going to do something differently, it often will make them look at their own habits around alcohol. And they might unconsciously feel a bit threatened about their own attachment to alcohol. What really matters is that YOU acknowledge you want to cut back and that you do something about it. And that it’s not black and white. Just because you don’t present like a down and out alcoholic doesn’t mean that your alcohol consumption isn’t a concern to you. If you think you drink too much and it’s been hard to cut back, it needs to be addressed. Don’t let someone else’s opinion deter your desire to cut back. This episode gives you permission to not feel obligated to do all the things around the holidays that you normally do 'just because it's family' or otherwise. I discuss how you have free will and autonomy as an adult to decide if you do things or not. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. And yes, some people won't like it and it's ok. If you do decide to do it even though you don't like it, own that it was still your decision to make. You will feel more empowered and better about being there than telling yourself you have to suck it up because it's what's expected of you. Learning how to start honoring yourself and doing things that are right for you is a process, take it slow, and watch how when you start honoring yourself, you feel better and will not need to escape with alcohol as much. Oh boy, are you in for a treat today!? I am sharing behind the scenes what's been happening with us on the parenting front. We had a big breakthrough last week and realized that our main focus on parenting was a bit 'off.' And we made a shift, and now our entire family is notably more engaged and happier. I also realized I was people-pleasing around my kids. I was relying on them to be happy and to feel good in order for me to feel good. My energy in making them feel happy or protecting their feelings caused a lot more negative feelings than necessary. Do not miss this episode! During the masterclass, we discussed: Being intentional vs unintentional. I taught you how to process an urge vs resist it. I taught you about planning your drinks/no drinks. I taught you and demonstrated the importance of managing your mind and getting good at writing down your thoughts. When we decide to pursue any goal, we need to get good at failing. Any goal or project we pursue comes with setbacks, unexpected events, and a whole slew of obstacles. But, somehow, we forget about that in the pursuit to stop over-drinking. Failure is a part of the process. But many of you are scared to fail, and that fear holds you back from pursuing what you want. The thing about the fear of failure is that you already know what failure feels like. That's why you aren't motivated to seek it out again. But failing doesn't have to be the mind-whipping we are used to. You can learn how to fail better, pick up, keep going, and learn from your missteps. This is where your growth and learning comes from. Also, letting the fear of failure hold you back doesn't feel good either. And then we live with a dissatisfaction of where we are with drinking, and then we continue to numb out. One of my amazing clients shared that she turned to her journal when she was having some chatter instead of pouring wine. She wrote it would have been easier but not BETTER. And I couldn't agree more. We are programmed for easy. But easy isn't better for most things. Our society wants now, fast, and cheap, and if we don't get things now fast and cheap, we don't like it. But the growth that needs to happen when you change your relationship with alcohol is a process that takes time and concentrated effort so that it can be EASY after you have established new patterns and behaviors. I was scrolling through some of my favorite sober Instagram accounts the other day and came across a graphic that said ‘5 ways to stop drinking.’ The first one was ‘ prioritize yourself .’ I thought, yah, I know what that means but if you are reading a post on how to stop drinking, it’s likely YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS. So, I thought, I’d explain if for y’all in this podcast episode. Often when we see, hear, or read these messages of advice, we think in big extremes. Ok, I gotta prioritize myself, and that means I have to say NO to everything, cancel all my plans and go hide for 3 months. And that is not something most people who want to stop over-drinking want to do, so then they don’t do anything and they continue on their path of over-drinking and staying stuck. In this episode, I describe the small nuances and decisions I make when I prioritize myself and my health and my life and how I want to feel in it. And the truth is, you do need to prioritize yourself when you are on this journey. It’s a requirement. Nobody is going to make sure your life has space in it for this work, that’s your job. And do you really want someone tracking you, asking you if you journaled, planned your food, drank your water, got good sleep every single day? Probably not. This is another question I received and wanted to dive into this specifically. This can feel like a dilemma. You notice someone you care about over-drinking. Maybe they are stumbling at the end of a night out. Maybe they can't drive to pick up their kids, maybe they get really sad or cry after a night out.... and it's not just a one time incident. You notice this frequently. Do you say something? Do you not? Is it your place? Will you be able to change them? Tune in and I address this very specific question. If you know someone who over-drinks it can be hard to be in a relationship with them. There is help for them and you. One thing you can do is share my podcast on your socials and emails. I'm answering more listener questions on the podcast today! Today is all about food! Many people transfer one over consumption to another. Today's episode is about food and how you can use the same tools that I teach about alcohol to how much/when you are eating. I address these questions: SO my question is, how do I transition this to food....I have found that I snack like it's my job now that I'm not drinking. I'm stuck here..I thought it could just apply the same principles for alcohol to food, but it feels different because I have made the decision to be alcohol free, but obviously need to eat.' and 'I have more weight to lose with and feeding kids complicated everything more than when I was younger.' Here's the question: Why everyone thinks you are over-drinking because of some trauma in your life or some emotions you are trying to cover up... how to deal with over-drinking because you simply LOVE the buzz. In this episode, I explain why you get a buzz and why we get addicted to it. I also share ways to regulate your dopamine levels and add smaller doses of pleasure into your life so that you aren't searching for the big hit of dopamine and alcohol at the end of the day. And of course this goes beyond just looking at the alcohol. Happy 'Love' month! I like to focus on self-love this month. I don't think anyone needs advice on how to love their friends and family more.. I think we could take a tiny fraction of the energy we spend loving others and focus it on ourselves. THAT IS NOT SELFISH. We have been programmed to believe that doing anything other than acts of service for other people is self-ish, especially as women. So, I declare February self-love month and inside my Alive AF! membership, we take it to the next level and call is Radical Self-love. Radical Self-love isn't what you might think. It's not saying no to everyone around you and booking a flight to the tropics for a month and laying on a beach and getting massages, although if you need to do that to get some space to reset, then by all means do it and you could even do it with me if you want to check it out [ https://www.angelamascenik.com/2024retreatsandcoaching ] Radical Self-love is a love you have for yourself that helps you create boundaries around things that aren't good for you, like alcohol or over-working. And having these boundaries is going to bring up your programming and can cause you to feel guilty, second guess your decisions, and more. And engaging in Radical Self-love is knowing that this will happen and choosing to follow through on what is better for you and working on the internal stuff that comes up. It doesn't really feel good when you are doing it, but over time, it will. Also, I dig into Addiction and how to recognize if you are engaging in your addictive mind versus the real you, do not miss! I recognize that being like me might seem ‘impossible’ to you. It might also seem impossible to you that your life could look like mine, full of big adventures, travel, successful business, amazing relationships, good health and alcohol free. I want you to know that I get it. Before I quit drinking and found life changing tools to help shift my perspective on what is possible, I wouldn’t have believed my life was attainable for me either, I literally thought my life was for certain people, but not people like me. This episode explores that we are trading off discomfort tomorrow for comfort today when we choose to drink off plan. And that the discomfort is not equal. The discomfort you will feel tomorrow is a lot bigger than the discomfort you will feel today. If you say yes to a drink today and it's not planned, you will have a little bit of comfort in that you won't have to work through your urges or feelings in that moment. But tomorrow's discomfort can last a long time, all day or many days and ultimately years, because we are dissatisfied with not honoring the commitment we made with ourselves and the constant breaking of our trust in our own word. We got home one day ago from a 6-week cross country and back road trip! Please tune in and hear my personal highlights of that trip and some of our fun activities. And how you can reacclimatize to 'normal' life that doesn't include extreme measures and restrictive dieting. I discuss how focusing on ONE thing for the first 24 hours is super helpful and will keep your mind from spinning on what you didn't do or need to do now that you have returned. Your mind will be triggered on the first day post-vacation, especially if you over-drank, overate, or don't exercise like usual. This is 100% normal. And we really don't want to take action when our mind is in this place. We want to move slowly and be gentle with ourselves. This episode dives into the concept of Restriction. I might be a bit controversial here, but I don't think Restriction around alcohol is a bad thing. We restrict ourselves from doing all sorts of things, right? I restrict myself from yelling at my kids constantly and eating all the junk food. And I want to restrict myself from these things. The act of restricting usually comes from feeling bad about ourselves so we do extreme diets, cleanses, and programs. The feeling of restriction comes from how we think about a program or how we are cutting back. I know what it’s like to be stuck and over-drinking and not believing in myself and feeling overwhelmed and anxious and often resentful AND using alcohol for all the good times too. However, I also know what it's like to come out of that situation and let me tell you, it's absolutely worth the effort. It may take some time and uncomfortable moments as you face your urges, but trust me, being free from the constant desire to drink is truly rewarding. I wish someone had told me that it wasn't as hard to drink less as it seems. I wish someone had told me all the benefits of cutting back I didn't know about because it might have helped me take control of my life even one day sooner. This week I am discussing why 'just being positive' doesn't work. When things are hard, and you or your loved ones are going through a rough time, and you have negative feelings about it, telling yourself, 'stay positive' or 'look on the bright side' doesn't work and can actually cause harm. This is also called 'spiritual bypassing' 'toxic positivity,' or I call it 'steamrolling yourself.' It's when you ignore how you actually feel, don't acknowledge it, and try to think positive thoughts about the situation. It leads to over-drinking, avoiding, overeating, hiding, escaping through social media, and ultimately not doing what we want to do or preventing us from moving towards our goals. So, this episode will help you acknowledge when you might be doing it and how to course correct that and allow yourself to feel the feelings you actually have. Over-desire is created by the consistent drinking we do in response to our emotions and urges. In this episode, I explore how we might always have painful emotions from something that happened to us in our past. The goal isn't to 'get rid of' or 'move on' past these feelings. The goal should be to accept them, validate them, and learn how to be with them when they come up. When we have thoughts like 'I wish I didn't keep feeling this way' or 'I want to forget about all that and move on,' it doesn't help, and it invalidates our experience. What we actually need is to acknowledge, pause and validate our feeling and learn how to be with them no matter how long ago the thing happened. This is actually how we can 'move on' easier and how we can be with these feelings and not let them interrupt our day to day lives or cause us to drink. In this episode I discuss how to be joyful and feel alive as you stop over-drinking. The reason so many of us over-drink is because we are using it as a reward for #allthethings we do each and everyday. However, #allthethings don't typically include doing fun and joyful things for ourselves, so at the end of the day we are in desperate need to reward ourselves and relax, so cue 'it's WINE TIME!' Adding more joy and pleasure to your everyday is how we stay connected to ourselves and feel good, so we don't need to seek the artificial pleasure through multiple glasses of wine and escape. When your life feels joyful and you feel good to be alive, you are less likely to seek something outside of yourself that actually doesn't make your life any better. Story time! We have recently been fostering dogs with the potential to adopt. It’s been a tremendous learning experience. In this episode I share the process that we took to set the dog up for the highest chance of success for our family, and in parallel discuss how it’s the same process for learning how to stop over-drinking and giving yourselves the best chance for success. You all have experiences in learning how to do something new. You all have made mistakes and learned from them and ultimately figured it out in the end. I invite you to remember something difficult that you had to figure out, and the process in which you obtained the result you wanted. Learning how to stop over-drinking is very similar. The biggest thing that stops us from long term success is our own mind and what we think of ourselves and our capabilities.
