Motilal Oswal Penalized By SEBI For Fraudulent Activities

Motilal Oswal has been fined a hefty amount of more than 20 Lakhs by SEBI. This is rare that such an old and traditional broker has been fined such a big amount by SEBI, but what led to all this?

April 2018-Aug 2019 investigation of the operations of Motilal Oswal brought into the picture a margin related fraud, and that has cost Motilal Oswal this heavy penalty by SEBI. But more than the penalty, what should worry this veteran stockbroker is the ill effects of such instances on its brand image.

SEBI has stated that Motilal Oswal was found to be funding clients beyond the stipulated time period and had failed to appropriate evidence of client order placement.

Specifically speaking Motilal Oswal was found to be involved in the misutilization of clients' funds and incorrect reporting of the margin. Sebi found that Motilal Oswal Financial Services incorrectly reported margin to the exchange in the F&O segment whether there was a shortfall in the case of three clients.

Further, it had given exposure to a few clients beyond T+2+5 days. But the point of astonishment arises as to the delay in penalizing this stockbroker. Since the fraud was committed during the 2018-19 period and post that SEBI's investigation only lasted for a month, then why was this charge of penalty brought on Motilal Oswal so late?
