In blatant rebellion against the clearly mad stranger, Halmut, who warned them to stay away from the Karst Caverns, the investigators hire and guide to take them. Their guide takes instantly to Gertrude who willingly distracts their guide the rest of the day. As they approach the caverns, they discover a hovel has been set up near the entrance and Halmut peaks out. Nellie does her level best to get some coherent information but the appearance of Carlo drives Halmut to fits of violence. It is also discovered they have been followed and once Halmut is subdued, the investigators decide they must get him to safety.
