Podcast: Addressing PTSD in the Primary Care Setting
For information about AMA PRA Category 2 credit™, visit the American Medical Association education hub and view page 10 and 11 of this document.
Target Audience
This activity is targeted toward primary care specialties.
Statement of Need
It is estimated that approximately 7-8% of the population suffers from PTSD at some point in their lives. Research shows that patients with PTSD symptoms are often undiagnosed in primary care, which is typically where these patients see health care providers for either co-morbidities or complaints that are manifested as a result of PTSD (anxiety, trouble sleeping, etc.). Research indicates that PCPs may lack the knowledge of common risk factors that indicate screening for PTSD; therefore this condition often goes undiagnosed and managed. (Harvard Review of Psychiatry, Journal of Psychosocial Nursing, etc.)
Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
- Differentiate between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and acute stress disorder (ASD).
- List the risk factors for PTSD.
- Define the types of trauma.
- Discuss the symptoms and comorbid conditions that result from PTSD.
