Journalist Kate Wager, the author of “derailleur” and a contributor to Escape Collective, and Jonathan Kaplan discuss the dramatic and thrilling Vuelta Espana, which came to an epic conclusion in Madrid this past weekend.

Sepp Kuss, the 29-year-old from Durango, Colo., a veteran rider who has ridden in support of Grand Tour champions Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic, became the second American man to win the Vuelta and the sixth to win a Grand Tour.

Winning a Grand Tour is never easy and this year’s Vuelta might have been one of the most dramatic and thrilling races in a generation. Once Kuss was in the red jersey, Team Jumbo Visma’s management had to decide whether the team would support Kuss or stick to the seemingly original plan to ride for Roglic, a three-time champion and winner of this year’s Giro.

But without leadership inside the team, hell broke loose on the road and the race transcended cycling. Kate Wanger and Jonathan Kaplan discuss the ethics of sportsmanship, fairness and the meaning of victory, and what Kuss’ win might mean for American cycling.
