God has given us a tremendous resource of receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues! Acts 19:2-6. (Paul ask a question) Its chief function is the personal edification of the believer. I Corinthians 14:18 – L.B. I thank God that I “speak in tongues” privately more than any of the rest of you. But in public worship I would much rather speak five words that people can understand and be helped by, than ten thousand words while “speaking in tongues” in an unknown language. Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues for the individual believer is used in their private life, although there is a public side to tongues. READ - Acts 1:4-5 – NOTICE: This is for the Promise of the Father. These scriptures refer to 2 baptisms. Water baptism (which is to be immersed in water) and being baptized with the Holy Spirit. This experience is a supernatural evidence of the Spirit’s indwelling. It is allowing God to release His fulness in your Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time event. We need to be continually refilled in order to renew our lives and ministries. We need to exercise our prayer language as a part of the Spirit’s flow and power in our lives. Acts 2:1-4. When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. READ - Acts 8:14-20. Acts 9:15-17. Acts 10:44-48. WHY DO CHRISTIANS NEED THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT? 1) You receive power - Acts 1:8 – But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. 2) Tongues is the Initial Sign - Acts 2:4 – And they were all filled with the H.S. and began to speak w/other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. L.B. says, “the H.S. gave them this ability. Mark 16:17 – And these signs will follow those who believe: In my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues. 3) Spiritual Edification – I Corinthians 14:4 – He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. Edify – charges, builds our Spirit up like charging a battery in a car. 4) Praying in Line with God’s perfect will and the unknown – Romans 8:26-27 L.B. – And in the same way, by our faith, the H.S. helps us with our daily problems and in our praying. For we do not even know what we should pray for, nor how to pray as we should; but the H.S. prays for us with such feeling that it cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows, of course, what the Spirit is saying as he pleads for us in harmony with God’s own will. Jeremiah 33:3 L.B. – Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come. 5) Builds and Stimulates Faith – Jude 1:20 – L.B. But you, dear friends, must build up your lives ever more strongly upon the foundation of our holy faith, learning to pray in the power and strength of the Holy Spirit.
