Hi Everyone! I had the pleasure of speaking with Laura Alderson a children's book illustrator based in Italy! So cool! Laura was kind enough to share her art journey with us today. Here is more about her: I grew up in the southern US, with an imagination ready for travel. In middle school I started writing a book set in Italy and my librarian encouraged both my writing and illustrations. My interests shifted to modern art while attending the University of Georgia, but I did sneak in a summer in Italy. After a few years designing offices in Atlanta, I started painting oil portraits, and then our family moved to NYC, where my daughter grew up. In 2011 our family unexpectedly moved to—where else? Italy! Wanting to start a new career from abroad, I decided to return to my original love of children’s book illustration. By this time I was ready to make use of years of accumulated art skills and cultural experience, as well as digital tools. I am now actively looking for representation to illustrate children’s books. I look forward to talking with you! Hi Everyone! I'm excited to announce I have an agent!! My agent is Tara Gonzalez, Erin Murphy Literary Agency. She was so kind to speak with me today and tell us about her background as an agent, and share what are things she's looking for in a submission! Here is more about Tara: Tara Gonzalez is an Associate Agent at the Erin Murphy Literary Agency , as well as the social media coordinator. She's located in Florida, although pre-pandemic she was always looking for an excuse to go elsewhere. Tara is actively building her client list. She loves all ages of children's literature, from picture books to young adults, with some forays into the adult space. Hi Everyone, I spoke with Jennifer Thornhill an illustrator I met via SVS Learn's Children's Book Pro. She speaks about her journey to becoming an illustrator. Here is more about Jennifer: I did the first part of my growing up in Alberta, Canada, and the second part in Ontario, Canada. Most of my hobbies as a child were related to arts and crafts. If I was indoors, I was drawing or working with craft supplies. If I was outdoors I was building forts in the woods with my siblings and cousins. My favorite thing growing up was Christmas. My twin sister and I started getting ready for Christmas on the first chilly day of August and didn't give it up until long after January 1st. Christmas is still one of my favorite things. My ideal illustration project is a beautiful Christmas book. I studied Art and English at Nipissing University in Bracebridge, Ontario. After living in Northern Ontario for most of my life, I moved to Grafton, Ontario- a small town on the north shore of Lake Ontario, where winters are much more manageable. I live here with my husband, three sons, two guinea pigs, and one really cranky cat. I spend a lot of my time drawing, but also enjoy baking, nature and wildlife photography, and volunteering for activities at our campground. On this episode I'm going to discuss some of the online school options for illustration. I did my own illustration boot camp last summer by taking classes on these online schools. I felt like I didn't have time during classes to brush up on the areas I was weak in. Here are the links below for the 3 online schools I tried. New Masters Academy https://www.nma.art/ Schoolism https://www.schoolism.com/ SVS Learn https://www.svslearn.com/ This review is based on my personal experience. Everyone is different and some people don't need a formal art education to be successful. As an art teacher, I've seen some really skilled high school students if given the right direction an online program might be a great option for them. These online programs are a great place to start. #illustrationpodcast #mycreativelife #illustratorlife #schoolism #newmastersacademy #svslearn #illustrationeducation #onlinelearning Please like and subscribe! It's great to have Nikita back. He was a guest during my earlier seasons. This is an update about his life and a teacher and graphic designer during these crazy times. Here is a bit about Nikita. Nikita is an NYC-based lettering artist, graphic designer, and design professor. His minimalist style reflects an admiration for work such as pure marks by Stefan Kanchev and beautiful typography of Doyald Young. As one happy client put it, ‘his work is conceptual, clean, and the reasoning behind every design decision is crystal clear.’ Focusing mainly on logotypes and lettering, Nikita has worked on a variety of design projects for local and international clients. He is an ambigram expert that has taught several ambigram workshops–in addition to having written a book about ambigrams. Nikita’s work has been featured in multiple design books and websites. His love of bad puns and jokes is second only to his love of type. To pass the time between projects, he reads, scuba dives, skydives, wingwalks, skis (not very gracefully), and travels. He thinks that writing about himself in third person is a bit strange, but he has gotten used to it. See his work at https://www.nikitaprokhorov.com/ or on IG https://www.instagram.com/typebynikita/ Here are some website that Nikita shared that are great for designers and illustrators. https://www.itsnicethat.com/ http://visuelle.co.uk/ https://www.behance.net/ https://fontsinuse.com/ https://www.designspiration.com/ #illustrationpodcast #mycreativelife #illustratorlife #graphicdesigner #typography Please like and subscribe! Hi Everyone, on this episode of My Creative Life I have Robin Martéa a fellow grad illustration. I got to speak with Robin and discuss your work and her process. She offered some great marketing advice for artists starting out. Here is a bit more about Robin. Robin Martéa is a visual artist, born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Since grade school, she has been heavily involved in the visual arts and has since then, developed a strong foundation in mediums ranging from painting to photography. She earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and is currently pursuing her M.F.A. degree in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design. “I like to think of my paintings as a window into my daydreams. Chasing my dreams is often done in the most unconventional way: through a brush and a canvas. My art, which is a direct reflection of my imagination, is illustrated through drawings that are grounded in hope. What motivates me are the works of artists and illustrators whose art tells a story in an imaginative way. When viewing my work, I’d like for the audience to bring all their aspirations to the table. This season I have many more illustrators since I've been focusing on children's books. It is exciting to have Jamie Zollars on the podcast. Here is a bit about Jamie. JAIME ZOLLARS began making art at a young age, but her illustration career didn't take off until second grade, when she started drawing unicorns on friends’ Trapper Keepers for shiny nickels. She went on to draw local library brochures and elaborate student council campaign ephemera, quickly sealing her fate. To make it official, Jaime spent seven years in college, earning a BA in photography from UMBC in 1999, and a BFA in Illustration from the Art Center College of Design in 2003. While waiting for her first illustration jobs, Jaime worked as an extra on movie sets, tried out for every game show imaginable, and went for runs on the beach, because this is what people do in Los Angeles. Five game show appearances and a first (and last) marathon later - she was making art full-time. Jaime has illustrated children’s books, magazines, newspapers, and ad campaigns. Her clients include United Airlines, Random House, The American Red Cross, Simon & Schuster, Scholastic, Little, Brown, Clarion Books, Quarry Books and the L.A. Weekly. She has also created artwork for galleries including Copro Nason, Gallery Nucleus, and Giant Robot. Jaime’s art has been recognized by a bunch of great publications and societies, including Taschen’s Illustration Now, American Illustration, Communication Arts, The Society of Illustrators, 3x3, Spectrum, Curvy Australia, Design Taxi, XFuns Taipei, DPI Taiwan, BBC’s Culture Shock, Small Magazine, Creative Quarterly, the SI-LA, and the SCBWI. I had the opportunity to visit the studio of John and Linda Jensen. They are two generous art professors and fine artists. I have to say the put the "FINE" in fine arts. Truly fine people. Both are highly prolific creators in their own discipline. John Jensen is a ceramic artist. During my art education classes at Armstrong Atlantic State University, I was required to take ceramics. Armstrong is now known as Georgia Southern University (GSU). I am so glad I did. He not only taught me a great deal about ceramics but as a teacher creating a great classroom culture. When you walk into his class you see a diversity in the age and abilities of the students and he encourages and teaches in a way that connects with each person. That's really hard to do as a teacher. His classroom had a zen-like quality to it, and it made you want to spend as much time as possible in the studio learning. Mr. Jensen ceramic pieces vary from thrown pieces that are delicately carved to full-size sculptures memorializing his friends and family members. He is constantly experimenting and even motorizing movement in some of his pieces. Here is his webpage on the Savannah Clay Community to see more of his art. I decided I need to speak with the art teacher that inspired two of my previous guests to pursue the arts for a career. I interviewed Bunyan Morris retired art teacher and artist based out of Statesboro. Here is a bit about Bunyan. Bunyan Morris Bunyan Morris has over thirty years of experience as a visual artist and public school art educator. The majority of his teaching career was spent as a high school visual art teacher. In this position, he taught studio classes in painting, drawing, multi-media, ceramics, and Advanced Placement studio art. Throughout his career, he has created and studied art. “Recently, I have been experimenting with color to create nature-inspired non-objective paintings and wearable art. The images are automatic and come from my psyche. I work with the compositions so that the paintings can be viewed equally from all four directions. The wearable art objects evolved from the paintings.” To see more of his work visit: http://echeegeecheestudio.com/about/ Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/echeegeecheestudio/ Please like and subscribe! In this episode, I got to talk with award-winning children's book illustrator Marjorie Crosby-Fairall. She is based out of Australia. Here is more about Marjorie. When I was a little girl I escaped to the library as often as possible where I spent hours devouring picture books and minutely examining their illustrations. I was very young when I decided to become an illustrator like my then-favorite illustrator C.W. Anderson (what little girl doesn’t love horse drawings?). Encouraged by my creative family, I gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from Northern Illinois University. Following my move to Australia, I worked in many areas of illustration, including picture book illustrations. I live in Sydney with my husband and son and spend my days happily illustrating books in the company of my dog, Junior. I love to experiment with new techniques for my illustrations, but always seem to return to my beloved and well-used color pencils. Released November 2016, One Christmas Eve (by Corinne Fenton for Black Dog Books an imprint of Walker Books) was the inspiration for the 2016 Meyer Christmas Windows in Melbourne. I was awarded the CBCA Eve Pownall Award for my first picture book, Killer Plants (Penguin). My books appear on the Premier’s Reading Challenge lists and have been shortlisted or won awards, including My Little World (Omnibus), which was shortlisted for the 2012 Wilderness Society Environment Award, and The Croc & the Platypus (Walker Books), which was shortlisted for the 2015 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year. I had the pleasure of meeting TeMika Grooms via the SCBWI Southern Breeze. She is such a generous and knowledgeable illustrator. I think her passion and kindness shine through in this interview. Here is a little about TeMika. TeMika Grooms is an Atlanta-based artist, author, and arts advocate. Her interest in art and storytelling began early in life under the influence of her mother, an artist, educator, and librarian. Creative art practices provided TeMika with an outlet during challenging transitional periods as a military child settling in Columbus, Georgia. Under the direction of wonderful teachers, she was provided a well-rounded education that supported her artistic talent and ability to capture and animate the human form with strong, fluid lines and expressive movement. To expand on her traditional art-making skills, TeMika is exploring the use of technology in art by creating digital paintings and surveying new avenues to bring interactive art to the public. TeMika was selected for the international 2008 Taller Norte Portobelo Artist-in-Residence program to work on an illustrated sequential art project and present an art workshop to Spanish-speaking children in Portobelo, Panama. Since that time, she has produced multiple books in children’s literature and community art programs to support creative initiatives. She currently works with the international organization Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) as the Regional Illustrator Coordinator for the southeast region and serves on Board of Advisors Equity and Inclusivity Committee to impact the inclusion of diverse voices within the children’s book publishing industry. Her teaching career spans 30 yrs and she teaches high school animation, graphic design, and photography. I'm very fortunate that a little over 2 years ago I google searched animation teachers, and her name comes up at the top of the list. Reema helped me create my own animation pathway from sharing her extensive knowledge in education and art. Her website at her high school is a great resource for those interested in teaching digital media. Her students have gone on to work for major game industry companies such as Blizzard. This episode I interviewed my writer friend Heather Tietz. I was lucky to illustrate her book Yes, Jesus Loves You. She is a talented writer, and a really nice person! Little about Heather below: In 2008 Heather's first book with Cook Communications was born,"Through the Bible Crafts for K-1st Grade". In 2009 she was contracted to write "Crafty Cookin'" for Cook Communications, as well; both are FunStuff books, stand-along books that can be used to supplement Bible-in-Life Sunday School curriculum. Her picture book, inspired by her daughter, was published later in 2009 by Ambassador Books, a subsidiary of Paulist Press. It is titled "Yes, Jesus Loves You" after the old and well-loved hymn. "12 Colorful Things" was released summer 2011, and "Rock-a-Bye Baby Jesus" was published in December of that year. Here is Heather's author page on Amazon. Thanks for listening! Thanks for listening! My next interview is with Nikita Prokhorov. I met Nikita, 13 yrs ago at Scuba Diving Magazine. He filled in for me while I was on maternity leave. He had just finished his MFA in Graphic Design from Savannah College of Art and Design. Nikita has some beautiful design work and I've been watching is an evolution of his work on his Instagram TypebyNikita . Below is a little bit more about him. Thanks for listening! Please like and subscribe! This is the very first podcast of Nancy Miller Illustration. I'm an illustrator and teacher. I've created this podcast to talk about my creative life as an illustrator. I came up with 10 questions that I'm planning on asking other creatives. I decided I should try answering those questions myself. Here are the questions: 1. Can you tell us a little about you? 2. Describe the first time you remember making art? 3. What is your favorite type of art to create? 4. Who are some artists that inspire you? 5. What inspired you to be come an artist? 6. What inspired you to become an educator? 7. How do you stay motivated to keep working as an artist? 8. What are you currently working on? 9. Where is your favorite place to see art? 10. What's the most indispensable item in your studio? 11. At the end of your life you've made all the art that you've wanted and you've lived a full life. If there could be nothing left behind of your existence, a note with 3 truths about your life.
