DOJ says Cobb County fire department hiring practices 'unintentionally' impacted Black applicants
The U.S. Department of Justice has highlighted discriminatory hiring practices within the Cobb County Fire Department, specifically affecting African American applicants between 2016 and 2020. The department's use of credit checks and a non-job-related standardized test as screening tools were identified as contributing factors. Although the DOJ found the discrimination to be unintentional, it has proposed a consent decree to improve hiring practices. This plan, pending approval, includes a $750,000 monetary relief for eligible individuals and the hiring of up to 16 firefighters to address the issue. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is set to consider this plan in their next meeting.
