Your Daily Prayer 🙏🏾 Luke 9:23
True leadership begins with a servant’s heart.
Today’s daily devotional is based on the story of Jesus choosing the twelve disciples. These men came from humble backgrounds—fishermen, a tax collector, and even a zealot. Yet Jesus saw beyond their imperfections and called them to follow Him, revealing that greatness in the Kingdom of God doesn’t depend on status or ability but on faith and willingness to serve. This story demonstrates how God calls and equips ordinary people for extraordinary purposes.
STORY
Heroes in the Bible: The Twelve
Scripture
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Luke 9:23
What does greatness mean to you? When Jesus chose His twelve disciples, He didn’t pick the most educated, wealthy, or influential men. Instead, He called ordinary individuals—fishermen, a tax collector, and a zealot—who had little in common except their willingness to follow Him. Jesus saw their hearts, not their resumes, and invited them into a journey of transformation and purpose. This reminds us that God’s standards differ vastly from the world’s. Are you focusing on worldly qualifications, or do you trust God to use you as you are?
Jesus taught the disciples that greatness in His Kingdom comes from denying oneself and serving others. Through their weaknesses, He displayed His strength, proving that God’s power is made perfect in our imperfection. He calls each of us to take up our cross daily, to leave behind self-centered ambitions, and to follow Him wholeheartedly. Are there areas in your life where you’re hesitating to answer His call?
Just like the disciples, we don’t need to be perfect to make a difference. All we need is faith and a willingness to say "yes" to God. Today, reflect on what it means to follow Jesus and trust Him to equip you for His purposes. How can you step out in faith to serve Him more fully this week?
REFLECTION
Consider how you view greatness in your own life. Are you chasing worldly success, or are you seeking to serve God and others? Take a moment to identify areas where you can deny yourself and serve those around you, even in small ways. Trust that God will equip you for His purposes when you step out in faith. This week, pray for a heart that is willing to follow Jesus, no matter where He leads.
PRAYER
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
LUKE 9:23
Dear Jesus, It is my hearts desire to follow after you. I only want to be where you are and where you lead. Being in the heart of your will is the safest place to be. I realize you may lead in ways that are foreign to me. I may not understand where you are taking me and I honestly may not even want to go there but it is in those times that I must deny myself and pick up my cross and crucify my flesh so I can follow you. It is painful to let go of my expectations and what I thought I wanted for my life. But that’s what it means to follow you and take up my cross. As surely as you said in the garden the night before your crucifiction, “not my will but thy will be done,” I too must have that steadfast perseverance to thy will not my will, as I follow you. Even as Jesus was obedient unto death he was raised up and you glorified him above all others. As I pursue you into your plan and purpose for my life I will accomplish more than I ever thought possible. You will lead me into your divine destiny and reward me for my obedience. In Jesus name, Amen.🙏🏾
