In our western culture, the term “pastor” has evolved slightly from it’s original meaning, and is often used to describe someone in a primary leadership role in the Church. You may have also heard terms like “associate pastor,” “youth pastor” or “worship pastor” all of which typically refer to staff members and leaders in churches who all fulfill different functions and operate in a variety of spiritual gifts.
The bible describes pastoring and shepherding as a spiritual gift where an individual is called by God and empowered to give oversight, to care for, and tend to the needs of the flock of God in a variety of ways. There is a strong one-on-one emphasis.
The gift of leadership is different from shepherding in that leaders may not focus on meeting individual needs of the flock, but inspire and influence believers by standing before the body of Christ as an example. They often receive vision from God and inspire this vision in those who follow them to lead believers into the fullness of God’s plans and purposes.
