Artist Profile of the Week: Elias Cooper

Ottawa, Canada — Singer, songwriter, and producer Elias Cooper is back with a compelling new release, “True Gold,” an exploration of the relentless pursuit of artistic perfection. In this introspective track, the musician delves deep into the chasm between artistic ideals and human limitations, a journey sure to resonate with anyone striving for excellence.
“I don’t know if I really believe in perfection,” he says, reflecting on the song’s title and lyrics. “Least not in the arts. It’s such a vain thing besides, searching for it, expecting you’ll be able to attain it. But as an artist, you can’t help but be driven by ideals.”
Though Elias’ musical journey began with piano lessons at the age of 4, it wasn’t until he took up bass and guitar in his teenage years that he truly felt passionate about music. He embraced songwriting at university, inspired by the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits, and Nick Drake. He then turned to music production, taking inspiration from the likes of alt-J, Chet Faker, and TV on the Radio.
His first album, Radio.1, released under his former artist name, Avram, bears this hallmark experimentation in genre and style, as do his songs today.
“No wonder I burnt out,” he says, referring to his years-long hiatus from music that prompted the idea for the song. “I’ve never been able to settle on a style, and that weighs on you. True Gold really encapsulates that struggle. It’s an exhausting place to be, always searching like that. It’s a space in which you’re constantly made to face your limitations as an artist and constantly reminded of how you come up short.”
“But ultimately, I’m glad to be back,” he concludes.
