Next Sunday, we enter the second half of Advent. Beginning on Dec. 17, the Church will sing the 'O Antiphons' as part of Evening Prayer. These antiphons use ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. The use of Gregorian chant enhances the beauty of the antiphons and draws us into a deeper contemplation of the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.
This week, we speak with Zachary Turner, Director of Sacred Music at St. Mary's Seminary in Houston, to learn about the role of sacred music in the liturgical life of the Church, and why we should take time this Advent to reflect on the 'O Antiphons.'
