Extract of bark to cure Crohn’s disease?

Following on from the recent report that nicotine in cigarettes can potentially alleviate some of the symptoms of colitis, there was an interesting discussion on Jeremy Vine’s BBC Radio2 program about a possible treatment for Crohn’s disease.

Marlene Barnes, aged 72, from Cardiff, has had Crohn’s disease since she was a teenager. Over the past 16 years she has been experimenting (sometimes with dangerous effects) with taking a powdered extract from the inside of various tree barks. She claims now, to have eradicated the disease, and her consultant gastroenterologist agrees.

It may sound crazy, but aspirin and certain chemotherapy treatments have been derived from bark extracts, so there may be some good science behind this.

Sadly, Marlene did not want to divulge which bark extracts she uses and hopes that someone would help take the research further.
