Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne.

Revelation 12:1–5 NKJV

Thus begins the 12th chapter of the Book of Revelation. The seventh trumpet has sounded. These seven trumpets are a part of the seven seals of the book of the last days of Man upon the earth and of Man’s mis-government. And we are following on the heels of incredible disasters that have struck the earth. Men have been dying by the hundreds of thousands—no, people have been dying in the millions. Disasters, wars, the beginning of what could be a nuclear winter—words fail to describe the kind of events that John has been seeing in this vision.

But remember, this is all just a bad dream in a way. Nothing is happening. John is on the Isle of Patmos. He’s been carried in vision to the day of the Lord—the time of God’s wrath, the time of God’s vengeance upon the earth—and he’s standing there, round-eyed, looking at all these things that are happening and marveling at them as angels showed him one thing after another. So, the seventh angel sounds and blows his trumpet and there is silence in heaven about the space of half an hour, some statements are made, and all of a sudden there appears a great sign in heaven.

Do you take your faith for granted? Or is it like a lot of married couples: We have been together for so long, we can complete sentences for each other. We can take one another for granted. And at some level that is a good thing. I can take it for granted that my wife will be faithful to me. I can take it for granted that she won't bust the budget. I don't have to check her credit card purchases. I only look at them to make sure that nobody is defrauding us with them. After 51 years of marriage, there aren't a lot of surprises, nor should there be. At the same time, love calls on us to be attentive to one another and this is where we too often fall down. Sometimes we just don't listen when our mates talk to us. Sometimes we just go on doing whatever we’re doing and we pay attention with half our mind. Now, that isn't anything to become upset about, but it is wise to do something about it. We sometimes have to tell our loved one, I need you, right now. Please give me your undivided attention. Now, I want to take a step forward from this and ask if we take our faith for granted in much the same way?…

There’s a hazard built into life that you may not think about that often. When you do wrong, you usually get away with it. It surely seems that you do—especially when no one finds out. And when we do bad things and get away with them, we are emboldened. Now, we’re looking for wisdom here and trying to make our lives work. So let’s check with the man who had the greatest gift of wisdom God ever gave to man. Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 8: Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. Ecclesiastes 8:11 KJ2000…

What sort of decisions do you have coming up today? Do you know what you’re going to do about them? Have you made any preparations (like asking a friend for advice or reading a book on the subject) so that when the time comes you can make a sensible decision? Do you have a framework within which you make your decisions—lifetime goals and moral and ethical standards? When you answer the question, How is my life working? your answer is going to depend very much on the decisions you are making—today, tomorrow, next week—which can impact the rest of your life . It may depend even more on the decisions you have not been making. Because, among the things that make life work, the ability to make decisions and act on them ranks right near the top of the list.…

Better is a poor and wise child, than an old and foolish king that will no longer be admonished. This is one of the saddest things about life—that men of power become foolish. King Solomon learned this the hard way and, in Ecclesiastes 4, penned the quote above. He learned that at the very height of success, foolishness is apt to set in. They begin to think that they are above the law—that the laws that apply to you and I don't apply to them. Another reason I think that men in power get in trouble is because they come to develop this sense of destiny—that since they are in power, that God or destiny is with them. Thus, their folly cannot cause them to fall. With that in mind, let's look at another great principle that's important in making your life work: the ability to listen to—and accept graciously—criticism.…

So, how is your life working today? Do you have all your ducks in a row? Is everything humming right along and you’re on schedule? Or do you sometimes feel as if the world is just falling apart? Even King Solomon had these troubles. In Ecclesiastes 4, this great, wise man said this: So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. Therefore I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive. Ecclesiastes 4:1–2 KJ2000 Only a fool plunges on without listening to the words of those who have gone before. I want to know why he felt like he did. I want to know what he had stumbled over—where the pitfalls and booby traps and land mines are. Don’t you? Well, he tells us a lot in this rather unusual book of the Bible. And in the process of studying our way through it, a lot of very important things come to the surface.…

It never ceases to amaze me how far Man will go, what dangers he will face, in order to penetrate the unknown. To us, the Lewis and Clark expedition was just an early attempt to explore the northwest of our country. But when you really look at what those men did and the dangers they faced, you have to wonder what drives men to do this sort of thing. They are only one example. The attempts by the Greeks and the Romans to discover the source of the Nile River, Christopher Columbus, and the settlers at Jamestown are just a few more. And if all that were not enough, we had to go the moon—and then go again—six times! And every time we went, the odds of coming back were not 100%. What on earth drives men to go to such lengths to explore their world, and to take such appalling risks to do it? I don’t recall exactly the path of thought that led me back to the beginning of Man, but I ended up at Genesis 1:26……

There’s a terrible burden that lays upon man. The world around him can be working perfectly. Everything can be in the right place, there is no immediate tragedy stalking him, everything can be beautiful, and a man can still be absolutely miserable. This is the man who can stand on green grass in the middle of beautiful flowers and shrubbery and sweet air, and curse the rain. There was a very wise man once, to whom God granted the wisdom to experience life and to understand life, and to be able to deal with it, and thankfully, this man wrote down the things that he learned about what make life work and what doesn’t make life work. Much of what he wrote is in the Book of Proverbs in your Bible, but less known and just as important is the Book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes is one whole context of the reflections of an intelligent, wise, experienced man. And if you want to understand how life works (or maybe more importantly how your life works) and what you can do to make life work for you instead of against you, like it seems to do so often, it is worth reading through.…

Does your life work? I mean, do you really have it all together? Do you have everything lined out in a nice, neat schedule that works for you every day? Are you working at the job you want, with money saved up for college for your kids, with life clicking right along? Or is your life like your garage? You can keep it all together for a little while, a couple of days, but pretty soon, entropy begins to set in. It is almost as though someone creeps into your garage at night, every night, and moves just a few things—not everything, just a few things—as the whole thing moves gradually into a state of chaos. Now, life is a bit like that, but everyone knows it is not really the devil that creeps into your life every night and moves a few things around gradually, until finally everything is out of control, right? You can mess up your life very well on your own without any help from anybody. But when the time comes to clean up your spiritual garage—to tackle certain things in your life—where do we look for guidance? Is there an instruction book for this?…

The core, the really core point about making your life work is figuring out what you want . I started to say it’s the hard part about it, but it isn’t so hard. It’s just something we don’t do. We never get around to thinking about it, and maybe taking a cup of coffee, sitting down and saying, What do I really want? What do I want to do tomorrow? Where do I want to be a year from now—or 20 years from now? We just sort of go through life. We never sit down and think about it. Now for Solomon, it was not so very hard to decide. He faced a frightening challenge for a young man, but he did know what he wanted. So his objective was to meet the challenges of being a new, young king following in the footsteps of a truly great and a much-loved king. But even Solomon, with the passage of time and the accumulation of power and wealth, got a little confused about what he wanted. Now fortunately for us, he wrote a book, and there is a lot that you and I can learn from that book about ourselves. It is the Book of Ecclesiastes.…

Eternity is a very long time. They tell us the universe is 15 billion years old, give or take 3 or 4 billion years, but 15 billion years is not eternity. Eternity is longer than that because 15 billion years, or even 30 billion years, implies that there was a point where it all started, and the astronomers tell us there was a point where it all started. Eternity didn’t start. Eternity was before that. You know, I can get my mind a little bit around the idea of time not ending —of there never going to be an end to things. God will last forever and ever and ever. But I have a hard time getting my mind around the fact that there was no start, no beginning, that He always has been . What do you suppose it’s all about? Surely God didn’t just start all this and walk away, and leave it to run down. What are we, some sort of cosmic ant farm? As members of this earthly ant farm, we have vested interests in knowing what’s going on here. Because if we can discern the purpose of God, if we can discern that there is a purpose, then there is one who has purposed , and we have answered the question of his existence, and gone on to something a lot more important than that.…

All of us have what some call a worldview . We are as unaware of this as a fish is unaware of water, but we all have a grid through which we view life’s problems and which we use to make decisions about those problems. For the most part, that worldview goes unexamined. We have always thought the way we have and unless something jars us off our platform, we always will. What are the foundational principles upon which we will base our end-of-life decisions, be it our own life or someone we love? As Christians, we like to think that the Bible is our foundation, our platform from which we view the world, and the framework for making the hard decisions of life. But we immediately, it seems, have a problem……

Do we truly understand how difficult the years ahead will be? Christians have often believed that we would escape the disasters striking the world simply because we were more righteous than others. Some thought we’d be taken to a place of safety , spared from the trials ahead. But the Bible tells us otherwise. Even the children of Israel faced plagues, and Jesus warned his disciples that they would face persecution and suffering. As hard as it may be to accept, the road ahead will be long and narrow, filled with challenges. It will become increasingly difficult to obey God and follow his commands. The world is reinterpreting right and wrong, making it harder to know which way to walk. How can we remain steadfast in our faith, as a culture is continually redefined around us?…

What did the First Christians believe about the last days? Forget about the expression the End of the World —the end of the planet is a long way off. It is plain, though, that the First Christians believed there was to be an end of the age (however one might take that) because that is what they asked Jesus about one day on the Mount of Olives. They were familiar with the Old Testament prophets and their view of the last days and end of this system. Peter cited Joel with clarity on the day of Pentecost. He would be less than human if he had not seen what looked like the initial phases of the end times. And yet, Christ would not come in his lifetime, for some 2,000 years to come, or (for all we know) many more years yet. The prophets told of a day of the Lord , a day of God’s wrath. And while they also saw it as a near-term thing, there is good reason to think that they also saw it as a distant event. It would be so cataclysmic that the destruction would boggle the mind. And they also saw it ushering in a new age. And not only did the First Christians have the prophets, they had Jesus’ Olivet Message to make them a little hypersensitive to prophetic events. Peter and the others thought they saw it coming, but they were also quite careful to avoid crying wolf. And they had good reason for that as well.…

What did the First Christians believe about the last days—the end time of man on the earth? It may not have been a lot different from what some of us believe today, as I suspect more than a few of us have been disquieted by events in the Middle East. Even if we don’t fully understand all the implications of biblical prophecy, we know that the Middle East looms large at the end time, along with serious loss of life. With the Iranian regime certain to develop nuclear weapons, and with the stated intent to destroy Israel, you have to take this seriously and wonder how much longer are we going to be able to go on this way. But we aren’t seeing a lot more than the First Christians did, and they can be excused for thinking the return of Christ would be in their lifetime. There were prophets among those First Christians but strangely, as far as the record is concerned, they express little interest in the far horizon. Perhaps, because they thought it wasn’t all that far away. The activities of the prophets in the church seem to be very timely—that is, concerned with the events of the immediate future. But that doesn’t mean at all that there was not a broader view of prophecy in general and of the last days in particular. In fact, you are probably already thinking about the Book of Revelation. But it is plain that they had a belief system about the last days which was, at first, somewhat off-base. To some extent, this is accounted for by something Jesus said. We’ll find it in Matthew, chapter 24.…
