In this episode of 100 Days of Kamala, we dive into the rich and heartfelt bond between Vice President Kamala Harris and Leah Williams, CEO of Digital Undivided. Leah leads a network of nearly 20,000 women of color founders committed to reshaping the entrepreneurial and investment landscape. As she tells host Priya Clemens, Leah and Kamala share a friendship that began in their early years as new lawyers and has grown into a lifelong connection. Leah fondly recalls, “She was described to me as someone you got to meet… someone who was forward-thinking on so many of the issues we were working on at the time around diversifying the legal profession.”
Leah paints an intimate picture of Kamala’s character: “She’s indefatigable… no one will outwork her,” she says, while sharing stories that showcase Kamala’s tireless dedication and vision. One particularly memorable experience was Kamala’s involvement in a pivotal 2006 gathering aimed at supporting San Francisco’s youth. “She wanted to be part of the conversation at the root cause of many issues,” Leah reflects, emphasizing Kamala’s proactive leadership.
Their friendship blossomed over shared values and deep family ties. Leah shares touching moments of how Kamala’s supportive nature extended to her own family: “She is an aunt every day of the week… and she knows how much it means to me when she connects with my daughters.” These moments underscore the genuine, caring side of Kamala that few get to see.
As they explore their mutual dedication to uplifting women, Leah discusses the urgent need to address systemic inequities in the investment landscape: “Women of color, particularly African-American women, are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs… yet they have the lowest rate of investment.” This mission aligns seamlessly with Kamala’s vision of empowering future leaders. “You don’t need permission to lead,” Leah notes, echoing one of Kamala’s guiding principles.
