1:51:59The Nostalgia Theater show returns with Zaki's in-depth discussion with author and Superman fan Glenn Greenberg about his new book-length magazine digging into the life, legacy, and legend of the Man of Steel just in time for his 85th anniversary (Superman's, not Glenn's).
After a pandemic-induced layover, the Nostalgia Theater show is back! For his return engagement, Zaki chats with Douglas Goldstein (Robot Chicken) about his work on Wizard and ToyFare magazines in the '90s, how ROBOT CHICKEN became the groundbreaking smash we know and love, and his new SyFy animated series DEVIL MAY CARE. 1:07:53Happy Valentine’s Day! To celebrate, I’m here with a valentine to my favorite movie of all time, 1968’s Planet of the Apes, and the entire multimedia franchise that sprang up in its wake! 1:26:19As a special Christmas present from your friends at Nostalgia Theater, here's our commentary track for 1993's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Released to mostly empty theaters on Christmas day twenty-five years ago, the film -- based on the popular weekday afternoon cartoon show and starring the voices of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill -- was the first animated feature based on the Dark Knight, and while it didn't find an audience initially, its estimation has only grown in the years since to the point that many consider it their favorite Batman film of all time! For this special track, I'm joined by returning guest John Trumbull, author of the an expansive history of Batman: The Animated Series, as we go through the behind-the-scenes history, offer some of our own anecdotes, and just generally have a good time with a fantastic, overlooked favorite. 1:04:22On this episode, I'm joined by special guest Ryan Hoss, founder of the Super Mario Bros. Movie Archive, to discuss the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros: The Movie. Released in 1993 just weeks before Jurassic Park gobbled up all comers, the Nintendo video game adaptation (the first video game movie ever!) -- starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the titular brothers -- didn't make much of a mark at the box office, but nonetheless remains an object of both derision and fascination in equal measure a quarter-century after its debut. Ryan explains why the Mario movie isn't deserving of the negative reputation it's accrued, and also talks about his site's successful efforts to mark the film's anniversary with a feature-packed blu-ray. 1:03:32As this episode drops it's the 50th anniversary of one of the most influential and important horror films of all time, director George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. The creepy classic not only led the late Mr. Romero to sequelize himself over the next several decades with Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and more, but everything from The Walking Dead to Shaun of the Dead to 28 Days Later owes some piece of its success to what Romero and writer John Russo managed to pull off with no budget, no stars, no extended locations, and no color. Here to help me mark five decades of this seminal experience is Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg, author of the new book JOURNEY OF THE LIVING DEAD: A Tribute to Fifty Years of Flesh Eaters. For this month's Nostalgia Theater I mark twenty-five years since Cheers -- one of the greatest TV show of all time -- left the airwaves. I was in junior high at the time, but I remember well how anticipated it was. A legitimate cultural event that prompted joy and sadness in equal measure. And in the intervening quarter-century the show has remained as beloved as it was during its initial run. My guest for this episode is legendary writer/producer Phoef Sutton, who was with the show for most of its legendary eleven-season run, starting as a staff writer and working his way up to showrunner. Phoef has plenty of stories to share from his time tending bar at the place Where Everybody Knows Your Name, reflecting how the show stayed vibrant through many different cast and crew changes, what it was like to say goodbye, and just what it was that made Cheers such a special experience for the people who made it and the people who watched.
