Ep.1 Athletes & Mental Health
Manage episode 331210460 series 3360528
Life as an athlete can be fun and exciting, but it's also stressful, mentally, emotionally, physically and psychologically demanding, and can be extremely taxing and overwhelming. Athletes spend numerous hours in the gym training their bodies, on the field or court practicing, traveling to games, showcases, tournaments and ID Camps. Standards are high and expectations are higher. Everybody has demands, coaches, teachers, parents, mentors, peers and sponsors; the list is long. Winning overshadows the athlete's mental health and wellness. Sadly, the "perform and win" mentality trumps the welfare of athletes hiding the fact that they're battling depression, a defeatist mindset, an obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) or perfectionism, low self-esteem, or other psychological issues or disorders. In this episode, Ty Pinkney introduces the podcast by diving directly into the mental health of athletes and those suffering with mental illness.
