Ep29. Managing organizational challenges with Sheree Galpert, BFA, MS
Manage episode 271944807 series 2393470
In Episode 29, we talk with Sheree Galpert, BFA, MS (dramaticresults.net) about the unexpected turns in life that led to her career in theater and to later become an organizational development trainer and consultant. During this episode, you'll learn about the diversity wheel and the idea that how you are perceived in society will lead you to live an experience other people give you.
This episode ties together topics of systems of oppression, diversity wheel, and identities with past posts I’ve made on Instagram about the culture of silence, power dynamics, women that are principal investigators, and professionalism. To my surprise, this conversation also tied back to the first episode where I asked my mom about our family’s anecdotes.

You might wonder why, if this is a science podcast, we keep talking about, quotes on quotes, other things… If that’s the case, let me give you a reality check. Science, or anything human for that matter, does not happen in a vacuum. Systems of oppression and the diversity wheel are relevant to science. For instance, systems of oppression are part of our decision making even without us openly thinking about what they are. They are part of our social norms and cultural assumptions. Systems of oppression are ingrained in each social context and organization, they are part of every step of decision making for things like: what are acceptable behaviors, who has power, who gets leadership positions, how studies are designed, who is included in the studies, and so forth.
Have you ever wondered whose pain or even discomfort you consider important and why? For real, not the story you tell other people. I invite you to get uncomfortable. Don’t worry, you won't break. In a society where feeding our egos and toxic positivity are encouraged, sometimes we need to take a step back and reassess what decisions we make daily and why. You know, maybe it’s time to redirect our thoughts and actions. As for my part with this podcast, let’s continue having candid conversations with interesting people to defy our knowledge and revitalize our minds.

I do want to put something out in the Universe: I’m looking for someone that does research on internalized oppression, assimilation, and colonialism as they relate to Puerto Rico so that I can invite them as a guest for a podcast episode. While at it, I also want to talk about the displacement and marginalization of Puerto Ricans.
Until the next episode! <3
