A clumsy list, easy to rush through, and yet when we begin to look carefully, we realize that these are not names of pedigree or prestige but rather a list of second sons, prostitutes and the powerless. The genealogy of Jesus is a list that questions our notions of earthly power and authority and forces us to understand that the power and authority of Christ is something altogether different.
