अधिकमूल्यकं चित्रम्

बालमोदिनी

कदाचित् कश्चन राजा स्वस्य चित्रं लेखयितुम् ऐच्छन् अत्युत्तमं चित्रकारम् अन्वेष्टुम् आदिशति लभते च । यदा राजा चित्रकाराय स्वस्य इच्छां कथयति, तदा सः 'कियन्मूल्यकं चित्रं लेखनीयम्' इति पृच्छति । कुतूहली सः राजा अल्पमूल्यके चित्रे किं भवति, अधिकमूल्यके चित्रे किं भवति इति पृच्छति । तदा तस्य उत्तरं किं ददाति इत्यादि सर्वं कथां श्रुत्वा जानीयाम ।

Once, a king, wishing to have his portrait painted, ordered the search for the finest painter, and he was found. When the king told the painter about his wish, the painter asked, "What value should the painting have?" Curious, the king asked, "What happens in a painting of low value, and what happens in one of high value?" Let us hear what the painter replies.
