Jim Chalmers will use a speech today to argue the tariffs are both 'senseless and wrong'. It comes as he prepares for his fourth budget right before the upcoming federal election. Also, the Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans' Association has raised concerns about the nation potentially sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. Over the weekend, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he remains open to making a "small" contribution to a peacekeeping force in Ukraine if requested. And an ABC Four Corners investigation has exposed systemic failures in Australia's $20 billion a year childcare industry, ranging from child abuse to failure to enforce regulation. But is at the heart of the investigation is evidence that many private providers are prioritising profit over safety. The former chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Professor Allan Fels, says urgent government action is required to improve the sector. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…

The Australian Academy of Science is warning the federal government to diversify research collaboration away from the United States. Academics from at least eight universities working on joint research projects with US institutions have been sent a questionnaire seeking to identify their alignment with US domestic and foreign policy aims. Plus, former Australian Ambassador to the US, Joe Hockey, joins Radio National Breakfast to discuss the evolving state of US-Australian relations, including the impact of tariffs on key sectors like pharmaceuticals and agriculture. Hockey also reflects on the future of the AUKUS deal and the challenges of negotiating with the US, particularly under President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the United States and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are both vowing escalation, after the US launched air strikes at the weekend. US President Donald Trump ordered the air strikes on Yemen's capital, Sana'a, to deter the rebels from attacking vessels on one of the world's busiest shipping corridors. Over 30 people have been killed, according to the Houthi-run health ministry. And Israel has categorically rejected a report by United Nations-backed human rights investigators that alleges Israel used "disproportionate violence against women and children" during the war in Gaza. It also accused Israeli soldiers of carrying out rape and sexual violence against Palestinians. The report released last week also accused Israel of committing "genocidal acts" by intentionally and systematically destroying embryos, sperm and other biological matter at a key reproductive clinic in Gaza. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…

A new report from the United Nations is accusing Israel of "genocidal acts" and using sexual violence as a weapon of war in Gaza. The Netanyahu government has labelled the accusations as baseless, saying the UN is continuing antisemitic attacks against Israel and refusing to investigate Hamas’ conduct. The report was led by the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, reporting to the UN Human Rights Council, which examined the widespread destruction of Gaza, the use of heavy explosives in civilian areas and Israeli attacks on hospitals and health facilities. Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin has given qualified support for a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. While the president says any ceasefire should pave the way to lasting peace, he has flagged there are "issues" which need to be discussed. In response, US President, Donald Trump, says he'd "love" to meet with President Putin. And New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has refused to repeal hate speech laws passed in state parliament last month, despite police now alleging recent antisemitic attacks were orchestrated by organised criminals to further their own causes. The Premier is now facing calls for a parliamentary inquiry into allegations he misled parliament and the public when these laws went through. In a historic ruling, the High Court has upheld Commonwealth is liable for compensation over a mining lease in North-East Arnhem Land. The case was brought to the courts in 2019 by the late Dr Yunupingu on behalf of the Gumatj people. Meanwhile, the federal government says it hasn't given up hope of securing an exemption from US steel and aluminium tariffs, which are now in effect. The concern now is for other sectors potentially in the firing line, such as pharmaceuticals and agriculture, and the wider knock-on effects for the economy. Also on the podcast, the Islamophobia Register's latest research has confirmed what many in the Muslim community were already feeling - a dramatic rise in Islamophobia since the October 7 attacks in 2023.Their latest report shows incidents both online and in the real world have more than doubled since, and Muslim women are the targets by perpetrators. And ss AI deepfakes become more deceptive, there are concerns current deepfake detectors are not keeping up and are hampered by flaws. That's the finding from a new study by the CSIRO in collaboration with South Korea's Sungkyunkwan University. The research has also raised concerns about information integrity, fraud prevention, and public trust. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…

The White House has confirmed Australia will not be exempt from 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. The tariffs are set to take effect later on Wednesday, Australian time. Former US Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, says he cannot fault Australia for failing to make the right arguments. Mr Trump's spokesperson says Australia should consider moving the steel manufacturing industry to the United States if it wants to receive an exemption. Yet the Australian Steel Association says the US tariffs on steel and aluminium will have minimal impact on Australian steel. Also the United States says it will immediately lift its suspension of military aid to Ukraine and intelligence sharing with Kyiv, more than a week after imposing the measures. The announcement came at talks between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia. And the political fallout continues after police revealed that an explosives laden caravan found in Sydney's north-west - in January - was a "fake terrorism plot" organised by crime figures. The opposition leader has defended himself against the government's accusation that he "deliberately" avoided briefings on the case in order to continue the political attacks. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…

The Australian Federal Police has revealed an explosives-laden caravan found in Sydney's north-west in January was part of a "fake terrorism plot" by organised crime figures, and "was never going to cause a mass casualty event". The government has jumped on the revelation declaring that opposition leader Peter Dutton owes the wider community an apology for "recklessly" making "untrue" claims about national security for political gain. And Donald Trump has taken to social media to label former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull a weak and ineffective leader, after Mr Turnbull told American television that Mr Trump's tariffs could drive the US into recession. Mr Turnbull had declared that both sides of Australian politics are "gaslighting" the public, and says now is the time for a reckoning on AUKUS. As expected, Labor has had another thumping win in a W-A state election, winning a third consecutive term in government. Roger Cook's government is predicted to take more than 40 seats ... with the Liberals and Nationals to hold only 9 between them. So can anything be gleaned from that result for Labor's prospects in the federal election? Also, in 2019, Australian climate scientist, Dr Joelle Gergis gave a keynote presentation at the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic society's annual meeting warning that tropical cyclones would move as far down as Northern NSW. It's a prediction that wasn't too far off at the weekend when Cyclone Alfred made landfall as a category one system over the Moreton bay islands, north of Brisbane. And Sydney Morning Herald's Chief Photographer Nick Moir was on the scene when two ADF vehicles rolled outside Lismore on Saturday, leaving a number of soldiers injured. As well as being an award-winning photographer, Nick is also an RFS volunteer, so after taking a few shots, he put down his camera, and got to work. Cyclone Alfred has displayed several unusual movements as it slows to a crawl before making landfall in south-east Queensland. The slowed pace of TC Alfred has given the people of Brisbane more time to prepare, but also more downtime to wade through. It's also prompted ABC Radio Brisbane to pack up and leave its Southbank offices in order to prepare itself for emergency broadcasting. elsewhere. Meanwhile, an emergency summit of European Union leaders is underway in Brussels, to discuss ramping up defence spending and support for Ukraine. It comes as United States suspended billions of dollars worth of military assistance for Ukraine, as well as intelligence sharing with the country. And it was a remarkable week in terms of geopolitics and it ended with all hands on deck preparing for one of the most significant weather events this century. As Tropical Cyclone Alfred barrels closer to the Queensland coast, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has assured he has been speaking with the CEOs of some of Australia's major insurers. It comes as a new report from the Australia Institute report shows one in every five homes is either uninsured or considered under-insured. Meanwhile, non-for-profit organisations working with people experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough are preparing for Tropical Cyclone Alfred's arrival. In Brisbane, Micah Projects has stood up a temporary 'safe space' in the city's West End for those in need. And then we can't forget Trump... Donald Trump took 100 minutes to outline his vision for a second presidential term in what was the longest presidential address to the US Congress on record. Mr Trump declared that his administration is "just getting started" after weeks of slashing government jobs, reshaping US foreign policy and igniting a trade war with some of America's biggest trading partners. We'll hear from Jon Sopel. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…

NSW Police have launched a major investigation into an online threat at a newly opened mosque in Sydney's south-west. Many in the Muslim community say it's left them feeling distressed, disturbed and heartbroken during the holy month of Ramadan. Meanwhile, sweeping US tariffs on imports from Canada, China, and Mexico have now come into effect, triggering retaliatory measures and threatening to ignite a global trade war. President Donald Trump believes the tariffs will spur investment in the United States. But economists say it's American consumers and businesses who'll be hit the hardest. And millions of people in south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales are bracing for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. TC Alfred is expected to make landfall as a category two storm between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast on Thursday or Friday, but heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for the wider warning zone. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been warmly welcomed by European leaders in London, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing a new $3 billion (AUD) deal that would allow Ukraine to purchase 5,000 air-defence missiles using export finance. The scenes in London have contrasted sharply with the shouting and finger pointing in Washington at the weekend. The fiery exchange marks a difficult time in world politics. So how are the major parties here navigating it? And the health funding announcements keep coming from both sides of politics. In the latest development, Labor is promising 50 new urgent care clinics to be rolled out across the country at a cost of $650 million. This time the Coalition hasn't immediately matched the policy and says there'll be further announcements in to come. Coverage and analysis of national and international events.…
