In this episode of The Vet Show, part of the Coach Robb Podcast Network, Toolman Dan and I tackle the critical foundation of time management and goal setting for Vet riders and racers. As the year winds down, we discussed how many of us set lofty goals early in the year, but often fall short due to a lack of time, not motivation. We outlined that success starts with identifying where your time goes and removing unnecessary distractions. Whether it's planning meals, scheduling workouts, or cutting down on excessive screen time on your phone, creating an efficient system that improves your projected vs actual completion schedule (remember, you can’t manage time, only yourself) is the key to incremental improvement in all aspects of life (personally, professionally, financially and athletically). We also walked through the importance of starting small and building consistent habits. Even something as simple as a 15-minute walk daily can lead to significant progress over time. Forming a habit isn’t about going all-in immediately; it’s about showing up and doing something, no matter how small, to lay the groundwork for consistency. By reducing barriers—like prepping meals ahead or creating reminders for tasks—you can save time and set yourself up for success in other areas like family, riding, racing, fitness and nutrition. Additionally, we explored the importance of establishing physical baseline numbers. Having a starting point with important elements like body measurements, food logs, time trials, maximum heart rate assessments along with accurate heart rate zones are all imperative for elevating your speed and endurance on the motorcycle. Finally, we discussed how frustrations are actually what’s holding you back and by directly addressing your frustrations provides you with the actual solutions to your frustrations (of all sizes). As Derek and I discussed, one of the key themes we want to emphasize is the importance of understanding context in motocross. Whether it’s assessing sponsorship dynamics, understanding mechanical tuning, or applying training insights, context is everything. A lot of parents and young riders see successful athletes and want to emulate them without fully understanding the underlying principles that led to those results. For example, using data from tools like Garmin to track everything from sweat rates to calorie burn gives a comprehensive view, but without understanding how to interpret and apply this data, it's just numbers. Our goal is to help listeners bridge that gap, offering insights on common mechanical and physical performance issues, and helping them avoid mistakes by learning from the experiences of others. In terms of training, we dove into how we can realistically set fitness goals for athletes, especially when their fitness levels are already high. Rather than looking for drastic changes, I focus on incremental improvements in six-week blocks, where small gains add up over time. Our four pillars—preparation, consistent training, strategic approach, and recovery—allow us to optimize performance by addressing each area individually and then as a whole. For example, ensuring proper nutrition and recovery is essential because overexertion early in a race can derail even the fittest athlete. By tracking all these metrics and understanding each rider's unique strengths and weaknesses, we help them create a balanced approach to training and race strategy that can yield consistent and improved results.
