This year for SPOOKY SEASON, we decided to do something a little different. Instead of talking horror movies or covering a Razzie-winner, we decided to let a friend talk us into covering something particularly controversial -- 2016's Ghostbusters: Answer the Call! Our friend and life-long Ghostbusters superfan Matt (AKA Toaster) joins us to talk about what did and didn't work about this Paul Feig film (spoilers: more than you might remember, considering this didn't get a single Razzie nomination). Jack gets talked into changing his mind on something, Matt reminds us of some of the awful nonsense held within the Sony Pictures email leak, everyone reveals embarrassing childhood stories surrounding the original Ghostbusters , and Joe forgets who was in this movie for second. Join us for this episode, but maybe leave the lights on if there's something strange in your neighborhood... CW: mention of racism dredged from the leaked Sony emails For more information about the Unofficial Willem Dafoe Bad Art Short Film Festival, check out derazzled.com/festival or email us at derazzledpodcast@gmail.com. We return to address some of the nerdier and more bizarre aspects of 2016's Assassin's Creed and the game series that it is based on! We explore the idea of epigenetic memory more closely (or as closely as two artsy dudes who know science-minded people possibly can), consider possibilities for other time periods this series could visit, explore the genuinely weird truth of what's going on with the Macguffins in the AC universe, and finally get around to Joe's fix for this movie. We talk about which of our ancestors we would want to see the experiences of, Jack's head nearly explodes, and we manage to also turn this episode into a love letter to the John Wick films. Our hosting switcheroo continues as Joe helms a full analysis and fix of 2016's Assassin's Creed, Justin Kurzel and Michael Fassbender's attempt to adapt the hit video game franchise to the silver screen. It didn't win any Razzies, but Jack got to do Caligula . In this 1st part, we breakdown what did and didn't work about the film, explore the connections between the film and games and briefly look into the series' history, and look into what some critics had to say. Jack laments his lack of virtual parkour skills, Joe gives a scattered overview of the games, and take a moment to laugh about cringeworthy presidential announcements. Join us as we explore what could have been a hit film series, where nothing is real and everything is permitted (as long as its PG-13, I guess). Stay tuned to the end of this one, because you won't want to miss the announcement we have for you! We find ourselves in a Freaky Friday situation as Jack takes over the 2nd Unit to share a decade-and-a-half long obsession of his: Richard Williams' animated passion project, The Thief and The Cobbler ! Never truly finished by Williams and released in a variety of cuts from different companies, this is a must-listen story for anyone even remotely interested in animation (and a heartbreakingly cathartic story for anyone with creative anxiety). Join us for the tale of arguably the longest production cycle in history (sorry, Mad God ), the ways people like the Weinsteins absolutely ruin films, and the heights of achievement and acclaim you can reach (and what they can cost). CW: This episode delves into the coercion, harassment, and sexual assaults committed by Harvey Weinstein throughout his career. If you wish to skip this portion of the episode, coverage starts at timecode 30:54 and ends at timecode 1:01:09. Further warning for sexism. We continue our deconstruction of Joe Esterhaz's An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn , the winner of the 19th Annual Golden Raspberry for Worst Picture! We learn the history of the use of the Alan Smithee pseudonym for directors, cover Esterhaz's overall demeanor and public perception, and (unfortunately) shine a light on the awful deeds of Harvey Weinstein (who is in this damn movie for some reason), and attempt to fix this thoroughly flawed and confused mockumentary. We get back to covering actual Worst Picture Winners with 1998's An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn , winner at the 19th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards! You can tell how excited we were to talk about this one by how long we talk about whether Batman's a fascist in the opening. We break down what did and didn't work about the movie, marvel at how anyone could possible cast Harvey Weinstein in an on-screen role, dig into what went wrong with this film's bizarre soundtrack, lambast Joe Esterhaz's lazy writing while defending his Wookiee-like appearance, and try to grasp how a movie like this can be so bad that the director took an Alan Smithee credit himself unironically. We come up with film aliases for ourselves, Jack recounts a bathroom crime, and Joe struggles and fails to remember the title of Comedy Central's single-season adult animated series Kid Notorious about producer Robert Evans. Get comfy, enjoy the episode, and please let us know if you know anything about Michael Ovitz. We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Suit up, settle into the Brother Eye console, and enjoy the show. CW: Sexual content, pornography, incest, violence, consent, sex work, frank discussion of human anatomy, murder, matricide, urine We conclude our coverage of 1979's Caligula with special guest Antonio Palacios of The Cultworthy Cinema Podcast! We hear more about the wild world of 5-star Amazon reviews, beg for you to sign Joe's petition to get Caligula into Kingdom Hearts instead of the one to get a 4K release of this film, allow Jack to continue his awareness campaign for Plague Dogs , explore why it's important to make sure everyone on your set is aware of and consenting to what is happening and to know when/when not to invite family to set, touch on the work of Gore Vidal (giving Joe a chance to reference The Venture Bros ), look into more of Tinto Brass's history and works, get into the nitty gritty on Bob "The Gooch" Guccione and Penthouse Magazine, manifest one of Jack's Grant Morrison references to bring up The Filth , discuss the importance of extras that really stick out, pitch Santa Sangre but with sex carnies, cover some of Caligula's actual history and acknowledge the issues with that scholarship, reinforce the importance of having breakfast, briefly cover the trouble Nero got into on tour, emphasize the importance of letting artists be artists, and continue our bewilderment at the utter lack of professionalism on spy job sites in 19 CE. One of the new features we wanted for season 2 is for us to pick something we want to cover regardless of it being a Razzie movie. Jack picked 1979's Caligula , which should be completely unsurprising if you've been listening to our show. To help us with this herculean task, we enlisted (perhaps conscripted) our friend Antonio Palacios (The Cultworthy Cinema Podcast, The Cultworthy Classic Podcast, and The Milf & Me Podcast), which probably counts as torture because we're somehow the second show to ask him to cover this. We take a surprise detour into the WILD world of Amazon movie reviews, learn the story of how Antonio first discovered this film (or, "How To Ruin Porn For Teenage Boys"), consider whether Tiberian punishments would be a good thing for some of today's politicians, ponder just how many penises it takes to destroy a film's messaging, get lost in the weeds over which pornographic scenes were added in post, hypothesize over inconsistencies in the production resulting from differences between director Tinto Brass's work and producer Bob Guccione's, take a moment to appreciate this film's poor editor, learn the secret origins of John Madden's teleprompter technique, cover the pitfalls of casting and dubbing over inexperienced non-English speaking actors for an English-language film, empathize with Helen Mirren's clear desire to be literally anywhere else on Earth, discuss the unsimulated sex in this film, address the ways historical inaccuracies can make for poor cinematic choices, and marvel at the weird ways this movie is reminiscent of certain Square-Enix RPGs. This one's not for the faint of heart. Get comfortable and prepare to never find anything sexy again. CW: sexual content, discussion of depictions of unsimulated sex/pornography, incest, violence, consent, sex work, frank discussion of human anatomy and cameras getting awfully close to things, horses with human jobs Podcasts Plugged In This Episode: The Cultworthy Cinema Podcast, Cultworthy Classic Podcast, and The Milf & Me Podcast (@thecultworthy on Twitter, or visit thecultworthy.com); Making a Martini (@MartiniMaking on Twitter)…

In our efforts to add some more variety to the show, Jack leads us on a whirlwind historical tour through the directorial works of acclaimed Monty Python member Terry Gilliam and his likely unprecedented run of just absolutely horrendous luck. We cover his entire non-Python feature filmography: Jabberwocky (1977) Time Bandits (1981) Brazil (1985) The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) The Fisher King (1991) 12 Monkeys (1995) Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (1998) The Brothers Grimm (2005) Tideland (2005) The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) The Zero Theorem (2013) The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018) Jack tries to get through all of this while trying to outrun his birthday hangover. We cover how not to watch Brazil, the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on Gilliam and likely an entire generation of poli-sci majors, the use of "gorilla" versus "guerilla," Gilliam's weaponization of the press and the consequences of his own actions, the importance of perspective when you're told you made someone feel unsafe, when a producer becomes a PROBLEM and why you should always get things in writing, the impact and loss of the massive talents of Robin Williams and Heath Ledger, the importance of context with focus groups, further evidence that horses are awful, a tangent about great WWE matches between the Undertaker and Mankind, the goddamn Weinstein Brothers, Matt Damon and whether or not he just has a thing for nose prosthetics, the invention of the "Dress Pattern Makers" film credit, Joe's favorite cheese, Gilliam's political inconsistencies in the face of the Me Too movement, an unexpected rant about Scientology, and the absolutely maddening events that lead to the documentary Lost In La Mancha (2002) and how none of that could account for the influence/interference of producer Paolo Branco. We also delve into some of our own film set misfortunes in our time as Ramming Speed Pictures. Take a seat away from any ladders or easily-breakable mirrors and enjoy this wild ride. Who knows, maybe one of these films will go just swimmingly! CW: Full spoilers for Brazil , descriptions of alleged unsafe working conditions and child endangerment, sexism, misogyny, discussion of the sexual assaults committed by Harvey Weinstein, mention of the deaths of Robin Williams, Heath Ledger, and Hunter S. Thompson. Podcast Plugged In This Episode: Doom Generation (@DoomGenPod on Twitter)…

The winners of the 43rd Annual Golden Raspberry Awards have officially been announced! Which movie will serve as our season finale? Will the Razzies' historical animus toward Sylvester Stallone continue? Will Morbius morb all over itself and somehow get released in theaters a third time? Will Andrew Dominik's weird issues with women in Blonde get their just desserts? Can Tom Hanks avoid Razzies coming from two different directions? Can anyone tell us literally anything about The King's Daughter and how they dragged Pierce Brosnan into that? Will Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun protect everyone else from ridicule? And will the Razzies do something...classy? Listen to find out! Also, in light of the Razzies' controversial nomination of 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong for her lead role in the remake of Firestarter , we cover the other children that have been nominated for Golden Raspberries over the years, including Brooke Shields, Mara Hobel, Macaulay Culkin, and Jake Lloyd. We wrap up our coverage of Mac And Me , everyone's favorite late-'80s legally-dissimilar E.T. brought to you begrudgingly by McDonalds! We say favorite because, somehow, it's not the only one. Before Jack can get to his fix for Mac , Joe dusts off our Lapsed Academic segment to break down 1987's South African late-Apartheid nightmare, Nukie . We dig into Mac And Me 's production, break down who was responsible for this mess of a film and the director's later days as a jingoistic and Islamophobic author after 9/11, cover the basics of Apartheid (we're not a history podcast, but we swear this is relevant), ponder the reasons that Eric's dad isn't in the picture, and ask how the traumatizing animated film Plague Dogs should have ended. Oh, and we perhaps conjure a horrifying nightmare image melding Jack's fear of horses with possibly the worst person in American history. You're welcome/we're sorry. We fulfill our very first listener request by tackling the movie no one would know about if it weren't for Paul Rudd committing to a bit for like 30 years on Conan O'Brien: Mac And Me ! It turns out this is more than just a single scene and is actually an entire ripoff of E.T. meant to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. That feels like a Mad Lib. We break down what did and didn't work about this movie (you may be surprised), discuss cinema's rampant anti-clown biases, ponder the potential max speed of Power Wheels back in 1988, and dissect one of the most troubling and accidentally hilarious deleted alternate scenes we've ever seen. But first, we get a little weirder than usual and touch on ways we want to expand the show beyond our previous scope. Come get weird with us and a movie that may or may not have been a breaking point for us! We completely forgot when the newest crop of Razzie nominations would be announced, so we're a bit late getting this episode out. As is tradition, we did our damnedest to avoid the actual nominations until we recorded to capture our real-time reactions. As a palette cleanser, we also talked about this year's Oscar nominations. Joe makes some predictions about the nominations before the reveal, we marvel at how weird it is that two major films this year feature an Oscar-nominated lead performance while being otherwise reviled, Jack unfortunately learns who Machine Gun Kelly is, we cover some truly bewildering nomination decisions, we revel in some truly outstanding performances/writing/directing that 2022 brought us, and Jack keeps things light with some dad jokes. We continue breaking down Josh Trank's Fantastic Four (god, I really don't want to type Fant4stic ) and attempt to fix it! Well, kinda. Instead of fixing this script, Jack pitches a page-one rewrite that should make longtime comic fans very happy. We go over some of Marvel's First Family's weird changes and variations through history, cover more details about Trank's Twitter drama, bemoan the folly of the seemingly-ubiquitous 3rd Act Massive Superhero Fight, emphasize the importance of respecting source material (instead of worrying about whether you're making something silly), and revel in our shared love of Portishead while lamenting some of this film's soundtrack choices. Jack continues his distaste for Mark Millar, Joe goes on a rant about bad science, and we ask the big question: Would Galactus spoon up planets like fancy French cuisine? But first, of course, we jus had to cover some weird superhero sex stuff. We crack open the second half of season 2 by tackling the other, non-50-Shades film that co-won Worst Picture at the 2015 Golden Raspberries, Josh Trank's Fantastic Four (or is it Fant4stic ?). We cover the history of film adaptations of Marvel's First Family, from the rights-hoarding Roger Corman attempt to this most recent version. Watching four movies repeatedly while adapting to a new job and multiple post-holiday season birthday celebrations made it hard to put together a full script, but thankfully Jack is a giant comic nerd and has a cornucopia of information to pull from regarding a wide variety of Fantastic Four stories from myriad writers, some tidbits about their creation by Jack Kirby, as well as the carousel of writers that were involved in this particular project. Will Jack and Joe be able to make heads or tails of this one? Will they end up revisiting weird superhero sex stuff? Will Jack finish the synopsis before the horses can catch up with him? We ease back into things after our holiday break by doing something new: celebrating our favorite films from last year! 2022 was an excellent year for movies, and we dig into a bunch that we particularly loved (as well as some that we were disappointing), including: Everything Everywhere All At Once The Menu Prey The Batman NOPE Bullet Train WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story X Pearl The Banshees of Inisherin and many more! We also take some time to look at the films we're looking forward to for 2023 ( Renfield, Dune 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, M3gan, Scream VI, etc ), get into a surprisingly long discussion about the Martin Scorsese and the MCU's moment in film history, and Jack's annual existential artistic crisis and how he manages that. Also, we apologize in advance for our negative opinion of Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers . What were your favorite movies from 2022? Let us know on Twitter (@DeRazzledPod) or by email (derazzledpodcast@gmail.com) and we might share your answers in a future episode this season! We brought our dear friend Scott McGrath back on to 1) make each other watch another round of our guilty pleasure films, and 2) make up for the fact that his last guest appearance was for Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas . Scott brought Hackers (1995), Joe brought Gamer (2009), and Jack brought The Flintstones (1994). Jack learns something about how hacking and phone phreaking worked back in the 90s and also hears some other early Internet jargon, we all give Fisher Stevens' skateboarding prowess the appreciation it deserves, Joe causes permanent injury to his friends by uttering an unused working title for his movie, Scott reveals he would probably do whatever Ludacris told him to do, we gleefully revel in Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble nearly getting hanged by an angry mob, and we also lament the tendency of '90s filmmakers to end family movies with terrible musical choices. Verhoeven Month continues as we begin our exploration of 1996's Showgirls , a movie that actively destroyed Jack's appreciation for breasts. Possibly the only NC-17 film we'll be covering on this show, we delve into what does and doesn't work about it, cover some of director Paul Verhoeven's background beyond what we did in our Starship Troopers episodes, marvel at the impact video rentals can have, make entirely too many references to Marvel Comics and Grant Morrison (but who is surprised?), talk about how poorly this film treats its black characters, and set the stage for part 2's coverage of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. Kick back by the burning remains of your Andrew Carver record collection, lock up the chimpanzees somewhere safe, and have a medical professional on standby in case Elizabeth Berkley's writhing somehow throws out your back and hips just by watching. Verhoeven Month continues as we bring you part 2 of our dive into 1997's Starship Troopers with friend and special guest Steve Luciano! We wrap up discussion of the production and the nightmarish on-location conditions, delve into some unfortunate setbacks during filming, cover the film's reception from test screenings and its official release, and marvel at just how wildly misunderstood this film was and how badly people failed to catch the satire. Join us and, at least for the next hour, forget about how a lot of this is still kind of a thing and increasingly distressing. HAPPY VERHOEVEN MONTH! With this November marking the 25th anniversary of Starship Troopers , we thought it would be a great time to bring on our friend and sci-fi enthusiast Steve Luciano on to talk about Paul Verhoeven's (formerly hated) satirical masterpiece. Joe presents some background on the film's production, Steve digs into Robert A. Heinlein and his book of the same title, Jack and Steve compare the film and the book, and we set the stage for how something can be so wildly misunderstood upon its release. Would you like to know more? EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to Joe being sick on the day of recording, we had to record remotely. Despite taking several precautions after what happened with our Battlefield Earth episode, we unfortunately had some audio issues with this episode as well. We apologize to you listening and to Steve for this unfortunate occurrence. Thankfully we were able to still use the majority of the audio. We return to wrap up our coverage of 2017's The Mummy , truly one of the worst performances of Tom Cruise's career. Jacks shares a truly horrendous anecdote about why Steven Spielberg won't work with Cruise anymore (allegedly), we dig into Universal's previous attempts to do Monster Universe crossovers and reveal all the known and rumored casting decisions that would have made up the Dark Universe, Joe goes on a bit of a tirade about the ethics of museum curation, and of course we attempt to fix this mess of a film -- but not before asking the question: Is The Mummy racist? Kick back and enjoy a tall glass of that awful black sarcophagus liquid as we finish this late Spooky Season journey. May Osiris (not Set) be merciful. You can't convince us that it's not still Spooky Season! In that spirit we sift through the sands to deal with 2017's The Mummy , starring Tom Cruise and Sophia Boutella. Jack kicks us off with some updates on horror movies he's watched since our actual Halloween special (namely, Halloween Ends , Hellraiser (2022), and Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon ). We dig into the writing of this film and the trouble that comes along long-running script reworks, bemoan the utter lack of Egypt in this thing, marvel at how relatively okay Russell Crowe was, and lament that we couldn't just be watching The Mummy (1999) starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiss. Listen to find out what happens when you try entirely too hard to make a movie fit a star (who apparently wanted to channel Nathan Fillion) and also setup an entire cinematic universe with a bunch of shoehorned sequel bait. Due to life-stress and an untimely loss of a pet, we're not up to doing a full episode this week. But we do have this excellent collection of high-quality deleted scenes from the first 6 episodes of this season, which includes: The Emoji Movie Development Hell: The Amory Wars Mommie Dearest Development Hell: The Six Million Dollar Man The Room Development Hell: Superman Lives, Part 1 We get into an unsurprising amount of comic book nonsense (including too many invocations of Alan Moore), bemoan Sony's childish leadership, wonder if polyamory or cell phones would fix CATS, delve into Jack's hatred of pop-punk, explore Jack's new career trajectory of shepherding actors into better final roles, ponder audio finger guns and the intricacies of podcast entrapment, and ask the age old question: did Zardoz give Connery a latex fetish? Enjoy as we continue to prep for next week's episode, which we promise will actually be part 1 of 2017's The Mummy .…

Jack went to his first Burn (think Burning Man but smaller and not ruined by tech bros) so we thought we'd do something special and have him record his experiences and impressions of the event! In a first for the show, we have real on-location audio of a unique event, which Jack and Joe unpack together. If you've ever wondered what goes on at one of these things, check it out and learn from Jack's firsthand experience (or at least disabuse yourself of the idea that they're just drug rave orgies). Listen to get Jack's thoughts on mead, experience the immediate impact of a horrible pun on a mushroom trip, learn about fun medications you wish were real, and feel the fear of a sudden mannequin appearance. Sit back, get the best possible view of the stars, and pretend for a minute that this wasn't born out of the idea that Jack would be watching Morbius on drugs. Caleb Feigles of Making a Martini (now the official 2nd Best Podcast in Pittsburgh according to the City Paper!) joins us once again to explore what happened behind the scenes of 1980's Xanadu and attempt to fix it! Much like Jack's idea for Olivia Newton-John's character, we stretch our legs as a Double Threat by delving into both film history and true crime history. That's right, this one didn't just have divas backstage -- it also had a slew of horrible murders in its wake that could have ended up with Newton-John and Sandra Day O'Connor as victims. Get all the details as we polish off a bottle of 19 Crimes' Snoop Dogg Cali Red, dig into the production and the stage musical, imagine needlessly dangerous porn shoots on skates, take a fun detour into American Zoetrope, and wonder how Joe didn't have a worse night's sleep watching this movie after the Saturday that he had. We were gonna cover this one later this season, but with Olivia Newton John's recent passing (R.I.P.) we decided to tackle this OG Razzie Worst Picture nominee much sooner than expected. And y'know what, we're glad we did, because Jack actually really liked this one to the surprise of Joe and special guest Caleb Feigles of Making a Martini. We roll out our new format by giving a rapid-fire synopsis of the film (lest Jack be punished with horse noises) and covering what worked and didn't work with this 1980 day-glo laser roller disco fever dream. We lament the camera work and fashion choices made for Gene Kelly's last feature film role, declare our love for the work of Don Bluth, and wonder at what happens when you get a bunch of Tron in your Greek mythology. Kick back and relax after a long day of roller skating to Electric Light Orchestra and enjoy part 1 of our journey into Xanadu! We continue our odyssey into Development Hell to wrap up our dissection of Tim Burton's unmade Superman Lives! Having covered the origins of Jon Peters and the beginnings of this project through Kevin Smith's role in this story, we now focus in on Burton's vision for Nick Cage as the Man of Steel in a story of the ultimate outsider. We cover the cavalcade of wildly talented artists involved, the utter pain in the ass that Jon Peters was for basically everyone involved, the panic spiral Warner Bros found themselves in, and just how the death of Superman Lives led to Superman Returns -- including as much as we could stomach of the absolutely buckwild idea J. J. Abrams had that cost us a Batman vs. Superman film written by the guy who wrote Se7en . We also touch on Warner Bros current woes following their merger with Discovery, as it seems like they've learned nothing from their mistakes. We hope that you enjoy the conclusion to this absurd story in which people are wildly in-character throughout, because sadly no one paid us $85 million not to do it. Settle in and wonder for yourselves whether Saved By The Bell's Zack Morris or Tony Shaloub would be your dream Superman. For our latest venture into Development Hell, we take on one of the biggest, most infamous examples of a film that never came to be: Tim Burton's Superman Lives . In the first part of our deepest dive yet, we start most people's first exposure to the story, Kevin Smith's story of getting hired to write the script. We examine Smith's story and dissect his script, but to really lay the groundwork for this tale we need to get to know the producer who hired Smith to begin with, Jon Peters. We relive the most intense and absurd of their filming experiences, revel in the early years of the View Askewniverse, ponder whether Jon Peters thinks Barbara Streisand can read, learn something new about sex worker hair trends of the 70s, and so, so much more. Listen as we rifle through the vast and numerous filing cabinets that hold this story, as we wish Warner Bros had done before Peters could get his hands on Supes' rights from the Salkinds. CW: Sexism, homophobia, violent behavior, comparisons to Donald Trump, mention of the Heidi Fleiss Hollywood Madame case -- and that's all just Jon Peters! Jack and Joe are joined by Dr. Becca Hayes (scientist, Pittsburgh improv comedian, and Joe's partner) to talk about the wildly troubling, weirdly campy, and terrifyingly not-supposed-to-be-funny Mommie Dearest (1981), winner of the second-ever Razzie Award for Worst Picture. But we don't just tackle the film -- Jack directly compares it to the memoir it's based on to highlight the differences between these accounts of Joan Crawford's problematic parenting. We dig into the life-threateningly glaring omissions, reminisce on Cabbage Patch dolls and other childhood toys, somehow manage to reference the Simpsons and F. To kick off our brand new 2nd Unit series exploring films and properties lost in Development Hell, Joe uses the release of Coheed & Cambria's latest album as an excuse to talk about the lost film adaptation of their long-running sci-fi epic, The Amory Wars. What was supposed to be a major feature produced by Mark Wahlberg turned into a lot of nothing despite a built-in audience. We try to get a grasp on why this project didn't come to fruition by delving into the finer details of the world built by Claudio Sanchez through songs and comics. Joe builds on material from the albums and graphic novels, as well as interviews with Claudio and narrative breakdowns from the sadly-defunct Cobalt & Calcium fan community, while Jack tries his best to follow along and make Star Trek and Grant Morrison jokes to cling to his sanity. Which is impressive, considering he's a time traveler from 1967 whose only musical touchstones are apparently Led Zeppelin and Herb Albert & The Tijuana Brass. Pull up your Ten Speed and man your own jackhammer as we dive head-first into the well and unknowing, and Joe chuckles to himself as Jack tries to figure out what any of that means. We're officially back for SEASON 2! We open things up by taking a fortunately short trip to Textopolis to break down The Emoji Movie (2017), the only animated children's film to ever win Worst Picture at the Razzie Awards. While we do have some ideas for how to fix this mess, we decided to try something different for our season premiere and examine Jack's writing tool of choice, the Hero's Journey, and how The Emoji Movie ignores the parts of the Journey it actually does engage with. As promised, here's the rest of our deleted scenes from season 1! These bits were left over from the last 4 episodes of the season, and include: -Several bits with BeLinda Berry in which we try really hard to avoid talking about 50 Shades of Grey , including talk of hot or un-hot teachers, noisy squirrels, and more -Jack and Joe continuing to geek out over Everything, Everywhere, All At Once -Our willingness to sternly scold someone who is talking in a theater, and mitigating circumstances that might prevent you from doing so -The whiny opinions of fragile man-babies upset about the first glimpse of Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor in the first Thor: Love & Thunder teaser, and why they're wrong. Welcome to the first set of deleted scenes from our first season! While we prep for season 2, we wanted to share some of our favorite bits from the cutting room floor. Scenes included: -Jack and Joe acknowledging the logical impact of Spider-Man: No Way Home on the past of the MCU -Antonio Palacios of the Cultworthy Podcast enlightening us to the wonders of Gilbert Gottfried's podcast -Instagram bookmark maker and literary influencer Jill Sheehe admiring the work of Bob Hoskins -Caleb Feigles of Making a Martini reminisces about post-dining mass bathroom emergencies in college with Jack, and his love of My Cousin Vinny -Raphael Moran of the Geeky Dad Podcast digging deeper into Alfred's possible creepiness or maybe extreme tailoring prowess in Batman & Robin - Mike Elliott and our recollections of movie rental places, presenting Knife-Bricker: The Brickening at a regional film festival, and an in-depth and possibly too serious discussion of some problems with the ending of WandaVision (note that this was recorded WAY before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came out) CW: discussion of consent and consequences of actions in relation to WandaVision We only started collecting these deleted scenes somewhere before the midpoint of the season, so we don't have material for the first handful of episodes. These bits are also not edited aside from some egregious background noise taken out of some clips, so we apologize for inconsistent volume or quality. Some of that is due to technical issues at the time of recording that we struggled to get around in the original episodes, and some of that is because Joe was recovering from COVID-19 while working on this and didn't have the brainpower to fix more. We'll have another of these episodes in two weeks, and soon after that we'll be back in earnest with season 2! Thank you all so much for listening and supporting us. We can't wait for you to see what's in store. For our season 1 finale, we finally tackle the movie that SHOULD have been named Worst Picture of 2021, Thunder Force . While it wasn't nominated for a single Razzie, Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy's latest collaborative effort is but one of a whole line of films that beg the simple question: Why? We don't just tear Thunder Force apart -- we go back through the entirety of On The Day Production's films (2014's Tammy, 2016's The Boss , 2018's Life of the Party , and 2020's Superintelligence ) to show conclusively that Falcone has not learned much as a director, writer, or storyteller, and break down the bad habits he and McCarthy fall into in the process. But, really, are they ALL bad? Join us for an academic treatise comparing On The Day's work to that of Adam Sandler, the absolute worst super powers you've ever heard of, bewilderment over Octavia Spencer's utter lack of emotion, and more praise for one weird crab man than you probably needed to hear. We also take a moment to gush about how good The Batman and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once are, because we clearly needed to talk about anything other than these bad comedies for a bit. CW: brief mentions of mental illness and bad media portrayals thereof; minor spoilers of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once Podcast plugged in this episode: The Geeky Dad Podcast (@geekydadpod on Twitter) If you want to review our fix for this or any other movie, or if you would like to make a suggestion for season 2, please email us at derazzledpodcast@gmail.com…

When capitalism breaks your brain, sometimes you need to kick back with something relaxing. But when you're us and you're still recovering from 50 Shades of Grey and also neck deep in Thunder Force prep, you end up talking about whether or not Batman villains are good in bed. So instead of going to confession, we decided to apply a methodology to it and truly figure out who is the BEST CINEMATIC BATMAN VILLAIN (in bed). From 1968 to today, we judge each of these on-screen menaces based on their performance (scale of 1 to 5), comic book accuracy (scale of 1 to 3), character's sexual prowess (scale of 1 to 3), and the actor's inherent f*@$ability (scale of 1 to 3). Jack tabulated his scores in advance along with community pervert BeLinda Berry, and Joe did his live. Is this stupid? Yes. Did we think it would take this long? No. Is it fun? You bet your Bat-nipples it is! Check it out and we apologize in advance for any Burgess Meredith Penguin nightmares you may have. Jack (Graham Buchamp) and Joe (Marmaduke Wolcott) bring on Jack's partner and local pervert BeLinda Berry (Florinda Taps) to talk about 2015 co-winner for Worst Picture, Fifty Shades of Grey. Join us as we rage about BDSM fashion choices and literary assumptions, marvel at just how fast you can get through a grueling audiobook, consider ways to get a troublesome author away from a film set, and demand to see more full-frontal dudes on the silver screen (hey, Tom Hardy did it in Bronson!). Grab a gyro from Sub's Way and have your FetLife profile open to add new interests (including better kinky movies). But don't you dare roll your eyes at us again. The winners of the 42nd Annual Golden Raspberry Awards have officially been announced, and we're here to do our grim duty and cover them! While there was no official ceremony this year due to COVID, all of the films and Bruce Willises were still recognized. Do Space Jam and LeBron James get the razzing they deserve? Can Jared Leto breathe under that makeup? Does Diana: The Musical count as a movie? Will Coke Daniels get the recognition he deserves (note: we have no idea what recognition that would be one way or the other)? Listen to find out some of these answers, AND how you can help us answer the biggest one! Before you ask, no, we won't be talking about Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars because we recorded before then. But we do challenge each other to a rousing game of Can We Be Friends! Jack and Joe answer the film taste questions they pose to other podcasters and end up having a good time. CW for brief mention of suicide depictions in the film Wristcutters: A Love Story. In honor of The Batman, a very good movie we would love to talk about, we decided to take a look at the absolute worst film adaptation of Batman to date: 1997's Batman & Robin. Special guest Raphael Moran of the Geeky Dad Podcast joins us to explore Joel Schumacher's Greek-mythology-infused, pun-laden toyetic living cartoon. Perhaps surprising no one, we end up on some tangents to try and discuss literally anything else. Topics include: Batman Forever, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Raphael's thoughts on the X-Men films, entirely too many detours to Bat Nipples, an official DeRazzled codpiece, what action figures of all of us would look like, and our pitch for Speed 3: Caged Heat starring Nick Nolte, Nick Cage, and Nick Cannon (seriously, Hollywood, you owe us for that gem). BANE! LISTEN! PODCAST! ENJOY! Check out the Geeky Dad Podcast wherever you find podcasts, or on Twitter (@geekydadpod). Podcast plugged in this episode: Doom Generation (@DoomGenPod on Twitter)…

Now, you may be asking, "Hey, wait a minute, this movie wasn't nominated for any Razzies! What are you tryin' to pull?!" And you're right, it wasn't. But please, put down that knife for a second and allow us to suggest that maybe Tom Hooper (y'know, the director of CATS) might not be great at making movie musicals and that maybe this movie is overrated. Our special guest, Caleb Feigles from the Making a Martini podcast, can't stand it and wanted to talk about it with us. So we decided to merge our formats for this very special episode -- we break down and fix Les Mis, and Caleb makes us cocktails inspired by the film! That's right, we're drunk for the vast majority of this episode, and shit gets silly. Join us for stories from Jack & Caleb's college days, delicious libations, the start of a Wolverine fanfic that would make Deadpool blush, and rampant mispronunciation of Eddie Redmayne's name. CW: alcohol, mentions of suicide, a horse noise The cocktail: Les Liberté (equal parts gin and tonic water, poured over cucumber slices and garnished with fresh, slapped mint leaf) Follow Making a Martini on Twitter (@MartiniMaking) Podcast plugged in this episode: Fuck My Work Life (@fmwlpod on Twitter)…

The nominations for the 42nd annual Golden Raspberry Awards have been announced, and Jack and Joe managed to avoid actually looking at them until part way through this recording! They offer their predictions for what they think will be nominated, marvel/rage over what was/wasn't ACTUALLY nominated, then go over the 94th annual Academy Award nominations to remember that good movies do exist. Listen for coverage of a plethora of films both great AND terrible, potentially unpopular opinions about Zack Snyder's Justice League and Paul Thomas Anderson, and a lovely tale about Jack's childhood that would make any social worker deeply upset but probably unsurprised. Now go watch Bronson, starring Tom Hardy. CW for references to drug paraphernalia and a fully nude Tom Hardy. We bring on special guest Antonio Palacios, host of the Cultworthy Podcast and the Cultworthy Classic, for part two of our journey of box office failure. We break from our normal format to talk about Cutthroat Island (1995) and Heaven's Gate (1980), two Razzie-nominated films that ruined their respective studios. But are they actually worthy of the derision they receive? One of them very much yes, but the other makes us question the very nature of film criticism to the point that Jack very well may cancel the show. Can Joe and Antonio talk him out of it? Can a pirate movie not based on an amusement park ride work? Can "one of the worst films of all time" be redeemed? Can we find more work for Jack Black? Listen and find out! CW for sexual assault, violence against women, violence against animals, and a horse noise. Joe also teaches everyone about the wonderful website doesthedogdie.com, an amazing resource to help viewers prepare for troubling or difficult content in films so they aren't unpleasantly surprised by something traumatic. Check out part 1 of our collab on the Cultworthy Podcast where we talk about A Sound of Thunder and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-cultworthy-podcast-ep-34-da-bombs-with-derazzled/id1589625928?i=1000551248833 Special shout out to Antonio's friends at Brainwave Film Group, who are working to make more diverse films in Utah and the surrounding area. Naturally it ended up being our longest single episode to date. Special guest and bookmark maker Jill Sheehe helps us figure out what this movie really really wants and where the budget went. Jack manages to put the Spice Girls in the Marvel Comics canon. Joe tries to puzzle out ambiguous James Bond rankings. We return from break and return to form with 1986's Howard The Duck, co-winner of the 7th Golden Raspberry for Worst Picture. We couldn't pass up the chance to tackle what will inevitably become the 1st movie in the MCU now that Spider-Man: No Way Home opened the multiverse door. We test Joe's knowledge of noir slang, delve into Howard's comic origins, address a problematic elephant in the room, and we talk entirely too much about duck nipples (which just shouldn't be a thing). Learn entirely too much about a comic book duck-person and see how Jack fixes this surprisingly fun Razzie-winner. Does Jack's fix do Howard justice? Let us know at derazzledpodcast@gmail.com!
