Season 6 Podcast 20 Book of Revelation “Opening of the Seven Seals, Chapter 18:1-13 “Babylon.” Last week we studied Revelation 17 “The Mystery of the Woman.” This week we shall continue with Revelation 18, Babylon.” Revelation 18:1 “And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.” The angel who comes down has great authority insomuch that his glory lights the entire earth. Christ will soon come the second time, but before he comes, the saints are given one last chance to come out of Babylon. Babylon was once a formidable city of great wealth. The hanging gardens of Babylon even today are considered one of the seven wonders of the world. It was also a great political power. During the days of Daniel and the Babylonian Captivity, around 586 BC, it reached its peak with Nebuchadnezzar II the emperor. He destroyed Solomon’s Temple and exiled the Jews to Babylon. Babylon has become the symbol of the world with its emphasis on wealth and power and sin rather than the worship of God. We are reminded of Christ’s words in The Intercessory Prayer. John 17:11-17 “And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” Just as the temporal Babylon, which appeared indestructible, fell in a short time so will the spiritual Babylon fall. John records. Revelation 18:2-3 “And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.” Again, John refers to the power of the angel. He speaks with a “strong voice.” The angel describes the state of Babylon. It is the habitation of devils, meaning, of course, evil spirits. It is the “hold of every foul spirit,” meaning that it contains all the evil allurement of Satan found in the world. It is eviler than Egypt. Eviler than Sodom and Gomorrah, Eviler even than the days before the flood for it has every foul spirit. A striking image is that it is “a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” It is like an Alfred Hitchcock movie. In the very next chapter, we learn of the Supper of the Great God.” Revelation 19:17-18 “And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.”…
Season 6 Podcast 19, “The Law of Justice Part 1.” We are spiritual beings living in a mortal world. Without spiritual law, we would be no better than animals. There are only two classes of spiritual laws: The Law of Justice and the Law of Mercy. We cannot live the law of justice. The only person who lived on earth who kept the law of justice was Christ. That is the only reason he could institute the law of mercy. We sometimes say that Christ lived the law of justice perfectly. That implies that one may be able to live the law of justice imperfectly. That is not accurate. One either lives the law of justice or not. There are no conditions to the law of justice. To break one law is to break the entire law. Christ’s perfection entirely depended upon him living the law of justice. He could not violate even one commandment of the Father. That is the great miracle of Christ. Only the Only Begotten Son of God could do that. Christ, who is the Old Testament Jehovah, had a mortal mother, Mary, and an immortal Father, Elohim. That is why he alone was worthy to open the book Revelation 5 1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? 3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. 4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. 5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. 6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. 7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. 8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. 9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. 11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. 13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. 14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever. The law of justice is the standard for immortal God. The law of mercy is the standard for mortal man. The law of justice is unconditional.…
Season 6 Podcast 18 John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, Episode 54 Chapter XI A, “Beulah Land.” In last week’s podcast Christian, while traveling through The Enchanted Land, continues to try to teach Ignorance, but he is unsuccessful. Ignorance is not teachable. Also, we learn of several new characters, Temporary and Turnback; as well as new places, Graceless and Honesty. In this, the last chapter of Book I, we enter Beaulah Land where we confront the first of two obstacles—The River—which is difficult for Christian to cross. It is only because of Hopeful that Christian survives The River. We also meet The Two Shining Men as we come to Mount Zion, and finally to the gates of the Celestial City. “Now I saw in my dream, that by this time the pilgrims were got over the Enchanted Ground, and entering into the country of Beulah, whose air was very sweet and pleasant: the way lying directly through it, they enjoyed themselves there for a season. Yea, here they heard continually the singing of birds and saw every day the flowers appear on the earth, and heard the voice of the turtle in the land. In this country the sun shineth night and day; wherefore this was beyond the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and also out of the reach of Giant Despair; neither could they from this place so much as see Doubting Castle. Here they were within sight of the City they were going to; also here met them some of the inhabitants thereof; for in this land the Shining Ones commonly walked, because it was upon the borders of heaven. Here they had no want of corn and wine; for in this place they met with abundance of what they had sought for in all their pilgrimage. Here they heard voices from out of the City, loud voices, saying, "Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh! Behold, His reward is with Him!" Here all the inhabitants of the country called them "The holy people, and redeemed of the Lord, sought out," etc.” Beaulah Land is Paradise for it is beyond the by-ways of destruction. Let us not forget the many obstacles that were placed in the Path of Christian on his journey prior to Beaulah Land. 1. The City of Destruction 2. The wilderness of this world 3. The Slough of Despond 4. The Town of Morality 5. The Hill of Difficulty 6. Danger and Destruction 7. The Delectable Mountains 8. The Valley of Humiliation (where he meets Apollyon) 9. The Valley of the Shadow of Death (or the mouth of hell) 10. Vanity Fair (Chapter Six) 11. Town of Fair-speech, Everything Christian endured prepared him to enter Beulah Land. For example, had he not overcome all of the following detractors he would not have completed the journey. 1. Obstinate 2. Pliable 3. Worldly Wiseman 4. Mr. Legality 5. Civility 6. Beelzebub 7. Season 6 Podcast 17 Book of Revelation “Opening of the Seven Seals, VI, Chapter 17:7-18 “The Mystery of the Woman. Last week we studied Revelation 17:1-6, “Babylon the Great.” This week we shall continue with Revelation 17 as the angel tells John that he shall explain The Mystery of the Woman.” Revelation 17:7 “7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.” In Revelation 13 we met the two great beasts. The first beast, which dies has seven heads and ten horns. In Revelation 17 the image is expanded because riding upon the beast is “a woman arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication.” The beast is also full of names of blasphemy, so it makes quite a dynamic duo, one formidable foe. The word. MYSTERY arises. A mystery is anything that is “difficult or impossible to understand.” Some synonyms for mystery are Enigma, Puzzle, Riddle, Secret, Conundrum, Paradox, Quandary, Wonder, Marvel, Miracle, Uncertainty, Obscurity, Anomaly, Phenomenon, Unknown, Cryptic, Ambiguity. The problem with the angel’s explanation is that it adds another mystery. The language is paradoxical. Revelation 17:8 “The beast that thou sawest was, and is not;” The phrase “was and is not” is actually explained in Revelation 13. Revelation 13:3 “And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.” Apparently at least one of the seven heads dies but is brought back to life causing the world to wonder. The beast was compared to a leopard, a bear, a lion, and a dragon—the dragon, meaning Satan, gave him his power. The animal images represent earthly kingdoms who have united to destroy the Church of God. Unknowingly they are acting under the power of Satan. Like the beasts, the kingdoms are deadly predators that devour the weak. A leopard is swift, a bear is strong, and a lion is fearless, king of the jungle, the jungle being a turbulent world. The beast reigns for three and a half years. His power is vast, but his target is the saints. Revelation 13:7 “And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.” The world is divided into two camps: Those who follow Christ and those who follow Satan. Those who worship the beast are not found in the book of life. Revelation 17:8 “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” It is clear then that the earth is divided between those whose names are written in the book of life and those whose names are not written in the book of life. This is the summing up. This is end-time. This is Armageddon. Everyone has chosen and it all boils down to those who chose Satan as their God and those who chose Christ as their God. The saints will prevail. Revelation 13:10 “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.” We know that the dragon is the source of power of the beast. Revelation 17:8 “… and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition:” It appears that those who follow the beast will go to hell where Satan dwells and will be imprisoned with him a thousand years. We know who is in the bottomless pit.…
Season 6 Podcast 16, “Creating an Environment of Freedom.” It is hard to believe that we are in our 6th Season. In Season 1, Podcast 33, the topic was Managing One’s Spiritual Environment. In this podcast I would like to return to the topic. The larger issue is freedom. The Holy Scriptures have a startling way of reducing a topic to its kernel. It becomes a seed that continues producing fruit, described so succinctly in the Creation story in the Old Testament. Genesis 1:11 “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.” I like the phrase, “whose seed is in itself.” Scriptures are fruit bearing seed which in turn bear fruit. A familiar example is the following profound look at freedom as taught by Jesus. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth , and the truth shall make you free. The first criterium is to know the truth. Truth is found in law. Spiritual truth is found in the Holy Scriptures which define the laws of God. Temporal truth is found in temporal law taught to us so eloquently by science, confirmed by the scientific method. Spiritual truth has an added witness, The Holy Ghost. Both may be confirmed by experiment. “Prove me now herewith,” said the Lord to the prophet Malachi. The second criterium is to obey the truth. It is knowledge of truth plus obedience to truth that makes us free. My purpose in this podcast is to show through the Holy scriptures how to create an environment of freedom. We often corrupt truth by changing the laws. I have often talked about The Four Laws of Freedom. Law One: The Law of Liberty commonly known as the Ten Commandments. Law Two: The Perfect Law of Liberty, which includes the virtues of Christ. Law Three: The Royal Law, which includes the two great laws, love the Lord and love your neighbor. Law Four: The Law of Equality, summed up in the clause, “God is no respecter of persons.” Only through obedience to those four laws can we claim the full promise given by the Lord when he said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Freedom is measured by how well we obey the four laws above. When Christ comes again, those are the laws he will use to rule the earth. Only there may we have perfect freedom. A perfect environment contains those four laws. That environment may not be fully offered by our government. In fact, the United States of America, which many claim is the greatest experiment in freedom ever established on such a large scale, though it allows religious freedom, does not reach such heights. When Christ comes again, He will establish a perfect environment of freedom, and it will contain all four laws. It will be a theocracy, not a democratic republic. The four laws, of course, overlap For Example, one could argue that the only law one needs is The Royal Law defined as follows by Jesus: Matthew 22:40 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Granted, a free government is a gift of God, but we do not live in a perfect world. The question is, “Can we create our own environment of freedom today?” The answer is two-fold. One, we must have a government that allows religious freedom. As citizens we must ensure that the government is never allowed to take away that freedom. Sadly, the liberals today are attempting to do just that by their unconstitutional and fanatical separation of church and state.…
Season 6 Podcast 15 John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, Episode 53 Chapter X B, “Ignorance Cont.” In last week’s podcast Christian and Hopeful have an extended conversation with Ignorance. Ignorance is a good person. He reaches Beaulah Land, the gateway to the Celestial City. However, Ignorance does not understand the necessity of studying the Holy Bible and strictly adhering to the written word of God. Ignorance feels that appealing to the heart is all that he needs. Christian continues to try to teach Ignorance, but he is unsuccessful. Also, in conversation we learn of several new characters, Temporary and Turnback; as well as new places, Graceless and Honesty. Christian has just quizzed Ignorance on what he dwells on in his idle moments. Ignorance responds that he thinks on God and Heaven. Christian tells Ignorance that it is not enough just to think about God and Heaven. He said, “The soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing.” Ignorance defends himself. “Ignor. But I think of them, and leave all for them.” That answer doesn’t satisfy Christian. Bunyan here is emphasizing the need for works. Bunyan is a strong believer in works, echoing the words of James: James 1: 22-24 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.” Christian responds to Ignorance. “Chris. That I doubt, for leaving of all is a very hard matter; yea, a harder matter than many are aware of. But why, or by what, art thou persuaded that thou hast left all for God and heaven?" Ignorance responds. “Ignor. My heart tells me so.” Such a nebulous answer doesn’t satisfy Christian. He wants something more concrete because the heart can be unstable if not rooted in knowledge. “CHRIS. The Wise Man says, "He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool." Christian, of course, is speaking for Bunyan, and Bunyan, a Puritan, is a literalist. Ignorance, who is unteachable, does not consider Christian’s counsel. " Ignor. This is spoken of an evil heart; but mine is a good one." Keep in mind the difference between Christian and Ignorance. Though on the same quest, Ignorance came in the back way, avoiding the Wicket Gate. He always took the easiest path. Christian has been thoroughly taught by Evangelist, the Shining Ones, Watchful, Discretion, Piety, Prudence, Charity, Faithful, the Interpreter; in addition, he has been through the Slough of Despond, over the Hill Difficulty, through Vanity Fair, into the Valley of Humiliation, and Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. He has been confronted by Beelzebub, Apollyon, Abaddon, and the Great Satan himself; He has been fooled by the Town of Morality. He was incarcerated in the dungeon of the Giant Despair and his evil wife, Diffidence. He has faced just about every temptation from Timorous and Distrust to Lord Carnal-Delight. Yet, Ignorance, who doesn’t even have a Certificate or a Script, ignores everything Christian attempts to teach him. Ignorance, thinking that simply wanting something is enough, travels toward the gates of the Celestial City unprepared. Christian asks. “Chris. But how dost thou prove that?” Ignorance thinks that proof is unnecessary. Hope is all he needs. “Ignor. It comforts me in the hopes of heaven." Ignorance does not understand the necessity of Faith, Hope, and Charity, the three theological virtues essential to get one into heaven. He dismisses them. Faith is action, a step into the dark. The symbol of Faith is the shield which keeps off the fiery darts of the adversary. The symbol of Hope is the anchor which can hold even a ship steady in the storm.…
Season 6 Podcast 14 Book of Revelation “Opening of the Seven Seals, V, Chapter 17:1-6 “Babylon the Great.” Last week we studied Revelation 16, Armageddon. This week we shall focus on Revelation 17, “Babylon the Great.” We have talked before of the three tempters: (1) wiles of the devil, (2) the craftiness of man, and (3) the alluring powers of the flesh referred to in the scriptures as “the natural man.” All three tempters are at play in the story of ‘Babylon the Great.’ In Revelation 17 Babylon the Great represents the world or the natural man or temptations of the flesh. Those are used both by Satan and his angels, who have no mortal bodies, as well as those mortals who get rich selling and exploiting human flesh, appealing to man’s natural appetites and unholy desires in unrighteous, unlawful, immoral, and criminal ways. To those who repent, all can be forgiven. That is why Christ died for our sins. However, the Holy Scriptures come down hard on those who don’t repent while they have the chance. Some of the last words of John the Revelator are: Revelation 22:11-15 “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” In Chapter 17 John is speaking of the Seven angels with the Seven Last Plagues. Revelation 17:1-2 “And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.” John is speaking of the intoxication of lust. Using the unabashed language of the King James Version, John compares Babylon to a whore who sells herself for money. We cannot overlook the fact that money is the core motive of Babylon. Babylon will sell anything for money: sex, drugs, fame, power, position, kingdoms, principalities, governments. We naturally associate the image with sexual promiscuity and sometimes focus on poor abused women as the criminals rather than victims. Merciful God will judge righteously, and justice will strike unerringly in the right place. Babylon symbolizes the unbridled lust for money, power, glory, fame, position, and promiscuity. In Babylon everything has a price, even if some are made slaves against their will. In fact, in the next chapter John clearly defines the merchandise. Revelation 18:12-13 “ The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.” We cannot overlook the language of John. He refers to Babylon the ‘Great.’ He also refers to the ‘great’ whore. Even a cursory study of the Holy Bible teaches one to count every word. The language of the Bible is incredibly economical, even in translation. I think we can assume that the word ‘great’ does not have the connotation of “excellent, amazing, outstanding. It perhaps fits better with Huge, Vast, Enormous.…
Season 6 Podcast 13, A New Voice of Freedom, Argument for the Existence of God, “Fact vs Theory.” What is true for one sphere is true for all spheres. The galaxy is a sphere. The earth is a sphere. Our body is a sphere. All spheres are governed by a complete set of laws. Within those sets are other sets all working toward a whole. Laws establish conditions and boundaries, and no sphere can exceed the complete set of laws that govern its boundaries. There are temporal laws and spiritual laws or temporal boundaries and spiritual boundaries. Temporal laws are fixed and assigned by God to each sphere. Science, when it is seeking truth, seeks to discover those laws, conditions, and boundaries and to see how they work together. It is no accident that math is the primary language of science because, although it can be paradoxical, it cannot be ambiguous. It is precise and predictable. We must understand, though, that math does not create law; law creates math. Law creates order; math merely defines or describes order. There is a significant difference. One primary attribute of law is predictability because when the conditions are met, the effect is deterministic and absolute. We need to distinguish between the laws of science and the theories of science just as we need to distinguish between the laws of God and theories of man. The laws of science can often be proven by the proliferation of technology. In other words, theories of law can be proven by obedience to temporal law. The laws of God can be proven by obedience to spiritual law. If one wants to use nature, one must abide by the laws of nature. If one wants a blessing from God, one must obey the laws of God that will bring about that blessing. In the past few hundred years technology has enjoyed a steady and phenomenal growth. Unfortunately, belief in God is declining because the temporal rewards of temporal laws are more enticing, and many are no longer willing to sacrifice their time to achieve the higher reward which is eternal life. In religion one must separate the laws of God from the theories of man just as in science. one must separate the laws of nature from the theories of science. True science is based entirely on the unbroken principle of causality. The theories of science, however, are often based on unproven inference of assumptions. There is a quantum leap between fact and inference. Inferences, or the assumptions of man, are often clouded by judgment, vested interest, personal bias, personal ambitions, personal beliefs, traditions, authority, and entrenched paradigms. They do not always enjoy the same verifiability. The worst thing to happen to science today is that they have obscured the lines among fact, inference, and judgment, as illustrated by the fact that evolutionists are now calling the theory of evolution a fact. That is an oxymoron. Many scientists preach atheism as a fact when it is merely a theory based on other theories. Science will never prove or disprove the existence of God, and the truths of science can never disprove freewill. Science cannot disprove the existence of miracles any more than they can prove their theory on the origins of life or the evolution of man. God exists, but the ‘god particle’ doesn’t. For example, a particle may exist which scientists choose to call the ‘god particle’ but matter will always require the organizing power of law and law requires the power of God. Life self exists, and its origins cannot be traced to a single particle or to a complete set of laws. The physical body, whether that body is human, animal, or vegetable, is determined by a complete set of laws, but the body is not life without a spirit, and a spirit is not subject to mortal laws.…
Season 6 Podcast 12 John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, Episode 52 Chapter X A, “Ignorance.” In last week’s podcast Hopeful tells how he struggled to overcome the natural man while living in the city of Vanity Fair. He recounts how difficult it is to put away the temptations of the flesh; however, through trials, temptations, and perseverance he was able to put away his past sins and come unto Christ. Meanwhile Christian and Hopeful are still traveling through ‘The Enchanted Ground.’ If they tarry too long, they will fall asleep and never waken. They feel they must continue to talk of holy things to stay awake. Meanwhile, again, they see a former acquaintance, Ignorance. Ignorance, too, is on a pilgrimage to the Celestial City; however, Ignorance took a short cut. He avoided the Wicket Gate, The House of the Interpreter, The Cross, and The Palace. He has missed out on many necessary things. For example, he hasn’t met The Shining Ones, Discretion, Piety, Prudence, or Charity. In addition, he doesn’t have a certificate to enter the Celestial City. He doesn’t read the scriptures daily, and he always takes the easiest way. Bunyan uses Ignorance to teach us that appealing only to the heart is not sufficient to enter the Celestial Kingdom, which is the highest kingdom of all. “I saw then in my dream that Hopeful looked back, and saw Ignorance, whom they had left behind, coming after. "Look," said he to Christian, "how far yonder youngster loitereth behind." Chris. Ay, ay, I see him: he careth not for our company. Hope. But I think it would not have hurt him, had he kept pace with us hitherto. Chris. That is true; but I warrant you he thinks otherwise. Hope. That I think he doth; but, however, let us tarry for him. So they did. Chris. Then Christian said to him, "Come away, man; why do you stay so behind?” Ignorance is trying to take the journey alone. He avoids the company of Christian and Hopeful. In fact, he is rather slothful and lingers far behind. It is an allusion to the fact that he doesn’t like to associate himself with other Christians or attend church or participate in any of the principles of the gospel of Christ or the saving ordinances such as faith, repentance, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost. The fact that he always remains far behind suggests that he does not endure to the end. He doesn’t learn anything from his journey because he avoids all trials. Bunyan understands Peter’s words that the trials of our faith are more precious than gold. Ignorance responds. Ignor. “I take my pleasure in walking alone, even more a great deal than in company, unless I like it the better.” Ignorance thinks that he doesn’t need the church. He doesn’t need the gospel. He doesn’t need the fellowship of Christians. He doesn’t need the ordinances. He doesn’t even need the Holy Bible. “Then said Christian to Hopeful (but softly), "Did I not tell you he cared not for our company? But, however," said he, "come up, and let us talk away the time in this solitary place." “Our company,” refers to the company of Christians or the fellowship of the Church of Christ. Christian Quizzes Ignorance. “Then, directing his speech to Ignorance, he said, "Come how do you? How stands it between God and your soul now?” Notice Ignorance’s answer. “Ignor. I hope well; for I am always full of good thoughts, that come into my mind to comfort me as I walk." Ignorance is not focused on the virtues of Christ, but on the philosophies of man. His mind is full of “good thoughts.” The irony is that Ignorance, who is in his youth, is an honorable man, a good man, but he thinks that the ethics of man rather than the commandments of God will get him into the Celestial City. Bunyan’s stand is that only Christ can get him into the Celestial City, that man’s philosophies are insufficient.…
Season 6 Podcast 11 Book of Revelation “Opening of the Seven Seals, U, Chapter 16:10-21 “Armageddon.” In Revelation 15, the seven golden vials poured out by the seven angels are referred to as “the wrath of God.” The Mercy of God refers to the atonement of Christ. The Wrath of God refers to the justice of God. We have The Law of Mercy vs The Law of Justice. The purpose of the law of mercy is to avoid the pain inflicted by the Law of Justice. Christ suffered that we might not have to. There are two kinds of anguish, one is physical, causing physical pain; one is spiritual, causing a sense of guilt or remorse or horror for the recognition of sin. Emotional pain can be both temporal and spiritual. The Wrath of God or the Seven Golden Vials do not represent the final judgment where the wicked must come face to face with their guilt. That is the pain of conscience often referred to as ‘a lake of fire and brimstone.’ It is not really logical to think that hell or damnation in hell is a literal fire because only human flesh can feel the flames of fire. Immortal flesh is immune to physical pain. However, everyone can related to the pain of severe burns; therefore, the images of fire and brimstone are used to describe the intensity of the punishment of the damned under a sense of guilt. Some Christians prefer to use the image as literal based on Gehenna, or Valley of Hinnom, which referred to a valley located outside the ancient city of Jerusalem which formerly was associated with child sacrifice to the Ammonite god Molech. Later it became a place where refuse, dead animals, and other waste were burned. Revelation 16:10 could be referring to spiritual pain, but it appears to be physical. Revelation 16:10 “And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,” Anyone who has bitten their tongue knows how intense the pain is. To gnaw one’s tongue to relieve pain illustrates how unbearably intense the pain is. There would be no medical services for everything is in chaos. The ‘seat of the beast refers to the headquarters of the leaders. The darkness could be spiritual darkness, certainly, but also physical darkness as all the power grids would be destroyed. In other words, it is a physical place. This undoubtedly refers to physical war. The seven angels symbolize the last seven plagues. Everything is leading up to Armageddon, the final war, so it is physical pain which could be caused by bombs, guns, flames, chemical warfare, etc., all too horrible to imagine. This occurs just prior to the Second Coming of Christ. The just have been taken up. Those left are temporal armies trying to destroy each other so the conqueror can rule the world, a world that will be in total ruin. Those left on earth know only the horrors of war. They curse God. Revelation 16:11 “And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.” Everyone is bloodthirsty. In such an environment soldiers would seek to inflict pain to revenge the pain they felt. One can only imagine a world where all law and order are broken down and everyone is armed seeking for revenge. Who would be safe? And in an environment like that the sixth angel poured out his vial. Revelation 16:12 “And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.” What would cause the waters to dry up? One of the first targets of a conquering army would be water supplies, dams, turbines creating electricity. Remember, everything is in darkness. This is an image of an entire civilization crashing down. You can see the irony. It is called The Wrath of God, but actually it is the wicked destroying the wicked.…
Season 6 Podcast 10, A New Voice of Freedom, Argument for the Existence of God, The Price of Freedom. I love the creation story found in Genesis. On the First Day of Creation, you have order created out of chaos. The earth is covered with water and darkness. God gives light to the earth, dividing light and darkness. Genesis 1: 1-5 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. On the Second Day of Creation our atmosphere is created, preparing the earth for life. Genesis 1:6-8 6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. On the Third Day of Creation the water and the land were divided. In addition, seeds were planted and the earth brought forge grass, herbs, fruit trees. According to genesis, seeds came first which is contrary to the popular scientific view that denies intelligent design. Genesis 1:9-12 9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day. On the Fourth Day of Creation time is established by developing a solar system. Genesis 1:14-19 14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. On the Fifth Day of Creation life is created in the seas. Bird life comes out of the sea which is in harmony with the modern scientific explanation. Genesis 1: 20-23 20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.…
Season 6 Podcast 9 John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, Episode 51 Chapter 9 H, “Come Unto Christ.” In last week’s podcast Hopeful explains to Christian how he was converted to Christ through the examples of Christian and Faithful in Vanity Fair. He recounts his struggles as a new convert. Hopeful concluded by saying that Faithful taught him of Christ. Faithful taught Hopeful that Christ “was the mighty God, and did what He did, and died the death also, not for Himself, but for man; to whom His doings, and the worthiness of them, should be given if I believed on Him.” Hope struggled with the new doctrine. The dialogue between Christian and Hopeful continues. “CHRIS. And what did you do then? HOPE. I made my objections against my believing, for that I thought He was not willing to save me.” Hopeful perhaps touches on a subject that is familiar to many Christians. It is simply this. He could see how Christ could save others, but he could not see how Christ could save him. Many are plagued with self-doubt, thinking their sins are too horrible to be forgiven. Faithful then teaches Hopeful to humble himself before God. “CHRIS. And what said Faithful to you then? HOPE. He bid me go to Him and see. Then I said it was too much for me to ask for. But he said No, for I was invited to come. Then he gave me a book of Jesus' own writing to encourage me the more freely to come; and he said concerning that book, that every word and letter thereof stood firmer than heaven and earth. Then I asked him what I must do when I came; and he told me I must entreat on my knees, with all my heart and soul, the Father to reveal Him to me. Then I asked him further how I must make my prayer to Him; and he said, Go, and thou shalt find Him upon a mercy-seat, where He sits all the year long to give pardon and forgiveness to them that come. I told him that I knew not what to say when I came; and he bid me say to this effect: God be merciful to me a sinner, and make me to know and believe in Jesus Christ; for I see that if His righteousness had not been, or I have not faith in that righteousness, I am utterly cast away. Lord, I have heard that Thou art a merciful God, and hast given that Thy Son Jesus Christ should be the Saviour of the world; and, moreover, that Thou art willing to bestow Him upon such a poor sinner as I am. And I am a sinner indeed. Lord, take therefore this opportunity, and show Thy grace in the salvation of my soul, through Thy Son Jesus Christ. Amen.” Faithful teaches Hopeful how to pray. Remember, this is all new to Hopeful. He doesn’t yet know Christ. Notice from the above the instructions that Faithful gives to Hopeful. Hopeful recounts Faithful’s teachings. First he teaches Faithful to pray to the Father: Next Faithful teaches Hopeful what to pray for. Finally Faithful teaches Hopeful that he must close the prayer in the name of the Son Jesus Christ. In the Sermon on the Mount Christ takes great pains to teach us how to pray. Matthew 6:5-8 “5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”…
Season 6 Podcast 8 Book of Revelation “Opening of the Seven Seals, S, Chapter 16:3-9 “The Beginning of Plagues.” The Lord unleashes more plagues upon the wicked. Revelation 16:3-4 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. This occurs just before the Battle of Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ. Scientists can tell us of the consequences: · It would disrupt the carbon cycles. Death and decay would release massive amounts of CO2 and methane. · Oxygen would be depleted. · Ecosystems would collapse. · Climate would be unstable. · It would cause an economic collapse. · It would increase toxification. · The earth could not recover Revelation 16 refers to the time immediately prior to Christ appearing. The time for repentance is past and the earth is being cleansed. To understand the escalation of the coming of End Time, let’s refer back to Revelation 7. Revelation 7 refers to an earlier time when people still have a chance to repent. The Gospel is restored, and people are called to repentance. The 144,000 are sealed. Multitudes of saints are exalted. This is all in preparation of the Lord’s Second Coming. Revelation 7:1-4 “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” The above is foreboding because the four angels ‘holding the four winds of the earth’ are standing on the four corners of the earth, poised to strike. For example, scientists tell us that if the wind stopped blowing, it would have catastrophic effects on the earth’s environment, weather systems, ecosystems, as well, of course, on human life. But the four angels are commanded to wait. That means, of course, that they will still strike, but before they strike miraculous things will first happen: First, the angels must wait until “we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” 144.000 does not mean that only 144,000 are saved. In fact, in Revelation 7 God makes that quite clear. The 144.000 symbolize those specially called to gather the elect. The elect themselves come in far greater numbers as the following verse makes clear: Revelation 7:9 “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.” And who are those that make up the great multitudes. John tells us. Revelation 7:13-17 “And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.…
Season 6 Podcast 7, A New Voice of Freedom, Argument for the Existence of God, “Immortal Matter cont.” Since a belief in God, angels, the spirits of the dead, the resurrection, and immortality and eternal life are inherent in Biblical teachings and in the doctrine of Christ, it will come as no surprise to Christians that immortal matter exists even on earth. Immortal things can only be discerned by spiritual eyes. No instrument of science is nor ever will be refined enough to detect immortal spirits. Those superstitious ghost hunters who take their instruments into ‘haunted houses’ to detect wandering spirits are whistling in the wind. We must accept that everything, even the spirits of the dead are made of matter. We must accept that Satan and his angels wander on this earth. Christ said, Luke 10:18 “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” The Holy Scriptures are filled with those who have had visions, manifestations, revelations, visitations, dreams, and other spiritual experiences whether for good or evil. In addition, many through the ages have born witness of receiving comfort or warning by a visit of loved ones from the dead. Their word cannot be proven or disproven scientifically, but can we honestly doubt the possibility. We may determine to believe or not to believe them but that is irrelevant to the reality of their experience. They alone have the authority of that. Myself, I am inclined to accept their word except in circumstances where they profit. I do not believe in ghosts for hire, and there is no amount of money on earth that could persuade me to play with a Ouija board or attend a séance. The devil himself may appear as an angel of light. Even if scientist could break through into the spirit world, they would learn nothing from the experience except to declare that it is further evidence that God does not need to exist. It seems that the more science learns about how God works, the less necessary they find him. One would think it would be the other way around. It is philosophy based entirely on temporal law, not science that blinds them. They have institutionalized atheism and immortalized the theory of evolution and rely entirely upon temporal or time constrained laws and luck. That is the hardest thing for me to reconcile: How does science, which has taught us so much about law, allow luck, accident, coincidence, or spontaneous creation any credibility? Let me insert here a spiritual law. That which has life in itself, such as the human spirit, does not increase entropy anywhere. It is not constrained by time or by temporal laws. All creation requires matter, energy, forces of opposition, and organized law. Temporal or mortal creation requires mortal matter, mortal energy, and mortal law. Eternal or spiritual creation requires eternal matter, eternal energy, and eternal law. The conservation laws in the spiritual realm are not the same as the conservation laws in the temporal realm. In the spiritual realm energy does not go from a usable state to an unusable state. It is usable all the time and matter doesn’t change. Only in the temporal realm does energy appear to go from a usable state to an unusable state because matter changes. All matter can be changed from mortal matter to immortal matter. Because matter cannot be created or destroyed, it is inherently immortal, but when subject to temporal law it is unstable. It is completely stable only when controlled by spiritual law. Because matter changes, even before our eyes, it plays havoc with our perception of reality. I can understand why scientists say that nothing is real. If I didn’t believe in God, the supernatural, and the immortality of the soul, I would agree with them. Science must look for reality in nature, but reality doesn’t exist in nature.…
Season 6 Podcast 6 John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, Episode 50 Chapter 9 G, “Hopeful Learns of Christ.” In recent episodes Christian and Hopeful meet the Flatterer and Atheist who try to lead them from the straight path. They also come to the Enchanted Ground which makes them drowsy. They keep each other awake by relating stories of their Past. In this podcast Christian quizzes Hopeful on how he came to Christ. We learn of Hopeful’s long struggle to find Jesus. “CHRIS. And could you at any time with ease get off the guilt of sin, when by any of these ways it came upon you? HOPE. No, not I; for then they got faster hold of my conscience; and then, if I did but think of going back to sin (though my mind was turned against it,) it would be double torment to me. CHRIS. And how did you do then? HOPE. I thought I must endeavor to mend my life; for else, thought I, I am sure to be lost forever.” One unique thing about Bunyan’s philosophy is that the way to the Celestial City is not easy. It is not just a matter of accepting Christ. The entire journey of Pilgrim’s progress is to unveil the cunning of Satan, the craftiness of man, and the temptations of the natural man, the three great enemies of God, particularly aimed at destroying those who try to follow Christ. For example, in the above, it was extremely hard for Hopeful to overcome the natural man and to change his ways. The more he tried the more Satan fought against him. To Bunyan the correction had to first come from Hopeful. “CHRIS. And did you endeavor to mend? HOPE. Yes, and fled from not only my sins, but sinful company too, and betook me to religious duties, as praying, reading, weeping for sin, speaking truth to my neighbors, etc. These things did I, with many others, too much here to tell.” To many Christian leaders that would have been more than sufficient, but not to Bunyan. “CHRIS. And did you think yourself well then? HOPE. Yes, for a while; but, at the last, my trouble came tumbling upon me again, and that over the neck of all my trying to do right.” Another great Christian writer, C.S Lewis, addresses the same issue in his popular book, The Screwtape Letters, in which a devil, Screwtape, teaches his nephew, Wormwood, an apprentice devil, how to tempt a new convert. The following is the last paragraph of Chapter Twelve. “You will say that these are very small sins; and doubtless, like all young tempters, you are anxious to be able to report spectacular wickedness. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you separate the man from the Enemy. It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the Nothing. Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick. Indeed, the safest road to Hell is the gradual one—the gentle slope. Soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts,” Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape. Christian continues to interrogate Hopeful, wondering why his old troubles returned. Hopeful’s answer reveals how cunning Satan is. “CHRIS. How came that about, since you were now doing right, as far as you knew? HOPE. There were several things brought it upon me; especially such sayings as these: "All our righteousness are as filthy rags;" "By the works of the law shall no flesh be made righteous;" "When ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable;" with many more such like. From whence I began to reason with myself thus: If all my righteousness are filthy rags, if by the deeds of the law no man can be made righteous, and if, when we have done all, we are yet unprofitable, then it is but a folly to think of heaven by the law. I further thought thus;…
