1:02:15There is huge potential for the leverage of data (and AI) to provide the most modern Citizen digital experiences, but that has to be balanced with managing deep legacy challenges and, of course, security risk. In a special episode this week, Dave and Rob talk to Craig Suckling, UK Government Chief Data Officer about modern public services, the challenges and opportunities in unleashing data in a safe and secure way, how AI fits into all of this and how Governments can lead the way in secure and ethical AI implementation. 55:24Season Three, Episode 16: Against All Odds, Jay Shifman Is Still Alive By the age of twenty-three, Jay Shifman had a life-threatening opioid addiction, twice been hospitalized for an overdose, twice attempted suicide, and spent a significant amount of time in an inpatient hospital and a rehab facility. Clearly that rehab facility didn't do the trick. But, today, Jay is a husband, the host of the Choose Your Struggle Podcast, a public speaker, and an advocate for Mental Health and Substance Misuse and Recovery. You hear me correctly. Substance Misuse. See, Jay believes that there is a huge different between Substance Abuse, Substance Misuse, and life-destroying addiction. I found my conversation with Jay absolutely fascinating, and I hope you will too! Multiple offices, and over 120,000 Tik Tok followers! I was blown away by Lisa, and when I spoke to the amazing Alex Minor, he easily broke down some solid tips to growing your business in this multi-media focused world. In fact, my conversation with Alex seemed almost like a roadmap for success, a road map that Lisa had followed based on instinct! 46:40Season Three, Episode 17: Lisa Phillips, Pink Lady Investigations In this week's Neurotic Nourishment Episode, we listened to the incredible Lisa Phillips discuss how she went BIG with her company, Pink Lady Investigations. Lisa has gone big. HUGE. Multiple offices, and over 120,000 Tik Tok followers! Lisa has a history of relationships gone wrong, but then again...who the hell doesn't. Join us for an honest conversation about where her personal life is now -- guess what? There is no paradise in parenting! -- and a brilliant laugh at some of the most awkward things she has had to do to catch her man -- or woman. Lisa doesn't judge, she just makes sure people follow the law, do what they are supposed to, and don't screw over honest people. Lisa is a self-made woman and grew her own business from scratch, from climbing towards the glass ceiling and occasionally breaking a nail in the process. But, if you look at her social media presence, you know she absolutely got it right! In this week's patreon episode, I interview Alex Minor, an expert on growing your business and strategizing about social media. 28:55Neurotic Nourishment Season Three, Episode 15: Part Two: The Strength to Move In this second part of our two-part series about Jan and Alan Canty, Jan discusses the fallout of life as she knew it. Jan candidly explores with me the times when she kinda should have maybe known that something was up with her husband of so very many years who turned to a young prostitute for love and affection after Jan -- well, after Jan grew up, for lack of a better wording. Spoiler alert: Today Jan is an amazing bad-ass, working on her second book, and very much ready to tell the story that once defined her, but no longer does. If you want to learn more about Jan -- and you should -- you should check out her current book, A Life Divided, and keep an eye out for her second book, which will be released within the next 12 to 18 months. 55:37Season Three, Episode 14: Part One: My Husband Died Living A Life I Never Knew Existed When Jan met Dr. Alan Canty, a well-known, well-respected Detroit Psychiatrist, he was eighteen years her senior and quickly became not only her employer, but her biggest cheerleader as well. She proposed to him, suddenly and out of the blue, and their wedding was picked at random when Jan pointed her finger at a calendar. Under Al's guidance, Jan would go from receptionist to college student to a licensed psychologist completing a post-doctorate fellowship. Join me as Jan and I have a painfully candid conversation about what the fuck you do when you discover that your husband has a mistress who is in the sex industry -- and that he has handed over close to $140,000 to her and her pimp. And when Al runs out of money? He dies. This is a two-part episode, the second half of which will be released next week. But...if you would prefer not to wait a week, feel free to join our Patreon at the $5 level and you will have immediate access to the rest of Dr. Jan Canty's story as well as 20 other bonus episodes. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/neuroticnourishment/support…

53:17Neurotic Nourishment Season Three, Episode 12: All Expert Testimony Is Opinion Warning: If you're not into bloody crime scenes, this episode *probably* isn't for you. Seriously. Maybe you just skip this one, just this one time, of course. In today's episode I get to geek out with Anita Zannin, an expert in Blood Spatter Pattern Analysis. Seriously, guys, don't call it blood spatter, that's just a sign of a newbie, or nub as my kids annoyingly and seemingly randomly say. If you're wondering how Anita came to be an expert in scientific gore, the answer is pretty simple: Kinda by accident. She majored in chemistry, didn't like it, worked in the medical field, still not quite the right fit, was interested in law but not so much being a lawyer, and when an opportunity came up to work with Herb McDonnel, one of the foremost experts in crime scenes who just so happened to testify in the O.J. Simpson case, and no biggie, also trained Henry Lee, a name you might recognize from, oh, I don't know, the Jon Benet Ramsey case, Laci Peterson, and Caylee Anthony, Anita was up for the challenge! Also, if you are into true crime and you haven't listened to Unraveled, hosted by Billy Jensen and Alexis Linkletter, it's time to pause this podcast and head on over there. Seriously, I won't be offended. They are absolutely fucking amazing. In their first season they tackled the Long Island Serial Killer case in a way that *actually* made me interested. And in their latest season, season number three, Anita Zannin appears on the show to explain the facts of forensic evidence -- which are much less glamorous than the story the prosecutors like to weave them into. I guess what I'm saying is that *technically* since Anita came on my podcast and Anita knows Billy and Alexis -- holy shit, my street cred just skyrocketed by association! Anita's website, az-forensics.com is fantastic, and a perfect resource for the student, the teacher, and the creepy-ass true-crime podcaster like me! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/neuroticnourishment/support…

55:56Season Three, Episode #9: How Do We Talk to Our Kids About Death With Dr. Marianne Matzo To hear Dr. Marianne Matzo tell the story, it sounds like she has always wanted to work with the elderly, and from the early days of nursing school, she quickly noticed a difference between the way the doctors attended to elderly, declining patients, and the way the nurses did. Maybe that was because doctors intended to fix and cure, while nurses...well, they tend to spend enough time around the patients to get to know them in a way that puts comfort and concern ahead of numbers and success rates. Dr. Matzo threw herself into the field of gerontology wholeheartedly, as she went on to achieve a Doctorate in Gerentology, became a licensed and registered Nurse Practitioner, and wrote one of the foremost books about palliative care in nursing. These days, Dr. Matzo likes to call herself "retired," although between you and I, dear listener, she is kind of full of crap. But in a good way. Dr. Matzo didn't actually retire, she just found a few new "side hustles" to keep her busy. Dr. Matzo is the host of the podcast "Every 1 Dies" (www.ever1dies.org), a weekly podcast where Dr. Matzo invites guests to come discuss all aspects of dying, whether it be hosting a pet psychic, or interviewing a death doula, or speaking honestly and openly to someone who might be struggling to come to terms with their own mortality. Dr. Matzo is also the author of Everyone Dies (www.everyonediesthebook.com), a children's book that is meant for both caregiver and child to help all of us find the words to use to discuss death. In addition, Dr. Matzo has an educational website that provides resources related to understanding, coping, and accepting death. That website is https://every1dies.org One last quick note: I was so intrigued with Dr. Matzo's explanation for how simple it is to talk to children about death that as a bonus Patreon episode -- just $5 a month and you get 3-4 extra behind the scenes episodes! -- I will be releasing an episode where I talk to my 10 and 12-year-old using Dr. Matzo's explanations. 24:40Bonus Episode! Season Three, Patreon Episode #1 In 1983, Rebecca and Vaughn Arceneaux of Kaplan, Louisiana, finally decided to separate after several years of remaining in a not-so-great marriage. Rebecca was given custody of their son, Beau, who was somewhere between 15 and 17 months old. The judge established a steady visitation schedule in which Beau was with Vaughn every other weekend. But, on November 22, 1983, father, Vaugh, failed to return Beau at the pre-arranged time. On September 15th, 1995, 12-year-old Beau, who lived in Austin, Texas, was chatting on the internet with a friend from Delaware. Colleen Lorenson made a joke that she could be his mother, since she was twice his age. But, Beau confessed that he wished he had a mother, since he hadn’t spoken to his own mother in 12 years. His father said Beau’s mother left him because she didn’t love him. Colleen Lorenson, from Delaware, just didn’t buy it. Neither did Kandy Slack, Beau’s neighbor whose computer he was borrowing, or Joni Whiting, from Minnesota. The three women were determined to find out the truth about Vaughn. 55:15Today’s episode was made for you, the listener. You, personally, I mean. You see, my dear listeners, I know who you are and what you struggle with. I know that you constantly strive to make your outside prettier than your inside, because damn, although mental health is important – and you know this – but, you live in a time or a town or a world where women are not supposed to age at all, and certainly not gracefully. You juggle a million hats. You have an idealized version of mom and wife and friend and daughter that you will never quite achieve. You don’t get sad, you go to the gym. You don’t get angry, you weigh your food and count your macros. You shrug off the shame that still lingers from your childhood or adolescence or 20something life. Maybe the shame is the result of something you did. Maybe it was something that was done to you, through no fault of your own. And yet, you power on. But for how long? Dr. Margaret Rutherford is a seasoned psychologist and the author of Perfectly Hidden Depression. As psychologists, and as people, we have been taught what depression looks like. And if your outside doesn’t match your inside, if our view of depression doesn’t match what a person is putting out there, than these people, these feelings, maybe even your feelings, dear listener, are left overlooked and untreated. Dr. Rutherford’s book, and my conversation with her, proved to be an eye-opening experience. I now ask my patients not only “Have you had thoughts about suicide?” but also, a follow up question, “Would you tell me if you did?” For more information about Dr. Rutherford and this syndrome of Perfectly Hidden Depression, check out the links in the show notes. Usually I say that I hope you enjoy this episode. In this case, I hope you hear this episode with an open mind, and a new perspective on what you and/or your loved ones may be going through. 42:44Season Three, Episode 2: What Would You Do To Save Your Child’s Life? In today’s episode, I struggle not to cry – because tears would do Jordan Ogman very little good. And my tears would probably be even less helpful to David Ogman, my current guest, new friend, and Jordan’s father. To understand this episode I think it helps if I explain how I connected with David: A few weeks ago I posted on my Facebook feed, asking if anyone had a story to share about living their best life during the pandemic. Or something along those lines. You see, as much as I bitch and complain about remote learning and never having a free moment to myself, the truth is that I have gotten to spend more time with my ten and twelve-year old children – who, yeah, are sometimes huge pains in the ass – than I would ever have spent otherwise. I have had the opportunity to complete my 200 hour teacher training, I have made some incredible friends on the other end of the universe, and I have managed to purchase more snarky shirts with funny phrases on them than I would have ever thought possible. But, I have also had a lot of bad, crappy, garbage-y days. So many of us discuss the bad, the isolation, the loneliness, the dear-god-what-I-wouldn’t-give-for-a-year-with-a-lot-less-excitement – it made me wonder, who out there is winning right now. Someone, somewhere, deserves to have a win. David’s answer shocked the sh@# out of me. David’s son, Jordan, is currently five years old. But, will he make it to age six? After a normal pregnancy and a slightly difficult birth that resulted in a week at the NICU, Jordan’s first year of life went…normally. But shortly after Jordan’s first birthday it became clear that there was a developmental delay that no one could fully diagnose. That’s because the disease that Jordan had been born with, TECPR2, was so new, and so rare, that the Jewish Genetic Screening that most Jews of Ashkanazi descent decide to undergo, had yet to develop a way to identify TECPR2 until a year after Jordan was born. The good news is, Jordan’s smile, charisma, and devotion to the Florida Gators managed to win over the heart of a researcher at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. But research takes time. And money. And the pandemic – although it has been an economic blow for so many, has also given David a platform to raise awareness about Jordan’s condition. And more awareness means the potential to raise more money. To find our more about Jordan, or to donate money to Shand’s Hospital’s Research on TECPR2, visit www.savingjordan.org --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/neuroticnourishment/support…

57:41Season Three, Episode 1: Suicide, Silence, And What Comes Next In today’s episode I get to reconnect with R.R. Campbell, also known as Ryan Campbell. I can honestly say that this was one of my favorite conversations I have ever had while podcasting, and Ryan may very well be quickly becoming one of my favorite human beings. Our conversation starts with the power of words and what we should and shouldn’t say when discussing suicide and mental health issues. I am not a fan of tip-toe-ing around word choice and diction, because I believe intentions matter more. Ryan and I discuss what happens in the aftermath of a parent’s suicide attempt, the power of humor to get us through tough situations, and how to move forward after someone you love takes their own life. Spoiler alert: throwing yourself into your work – no matter how passionately you feel about your work – is just another form of escapism and/or addiction. Ryan (R.R.) Campbell is an International Book Awards finalist, the Craft Development Chair for the Wisconsin Writers Association, and the founder of the Writescast Network. His published novels include Accounting for It All and Imminent Dawn , which debuted as the number one new release for its genre on Amazon. Its sequel, Mourning Dove , is now available in print and ebook with most major retailers. Ryan has also been an instructor for the University of Wisconsin Continuing Studies in Writing program. He has been an invited speaker at conferences and seminars including the University of Wisconsin Writers’ Institute, Write by the Lake, UntitledTown, Lakefly Writers Conference, WisCon, and Great River Writes. His short-form fiction has been featured in Five:2:One Magazine’s #thesideshow , among others. Ryan lives in Stoughton, Wisconsin with his wife, Lacey, where they co-own and operate Kill Your Darlings Candle Company, which makes candles for the wordsmiths of the world. Ryan’s newest book, And Ampersand: Short Stories on Endings and Beginnings (of a Sort) is available for preorder at www.books2read.com/andampersand. 44:12Season Two, Episode 31: Darius Baxter, The Selfish Giver Darius Baxter, CEO of GOODProjects, has made a vow to get 500 families out of poverty by 2030, and he thinks he is selfish. Because he enjoys giving to people, he enjoys empowering the impoverished community of South West Washington, D.C., and he enjoys paving the way for children in the projects to find a way out of the pattern they were born into. Darius is a fellow Georgetown alum, who met his best friends and co-founders in college. All three men grew up poor, with a childhood that could have left anyone traumatized. In Darius’s case, his father’s murder when he was 9-years-old resulted in being homeless, as his schoolteacher mother struggled to make ends meet. In 2016 GOODProjects began a summer camp to keep children off the streets and out of harm’s way, and employed older teens as counselors, to work and mentor these campers, or Dreamers, as they are referred to. Dreamers are fed three times a day and engage in academic enrichment, as well as fun and trauma counseling. In 2020, GOODProjects also began to pair Family Success Managers with the parents of the Dreamers in order to guide them towards self-sufficiency and out of poverty. This non-profit has done great things, and at 25-years-old, Darius is only at the beginning of the amazing work he will do throughout his life. 1:07:23Ariel Elias, a Kentucky Jew turned NYC transplant, was not named after The Little Mermaid, FYI. And if you had any doubt, listen to the comedian kick ass in a Roast Battle -- no way some fish-girl could rip someone's soul out with a smile. A lot of people in the entertainment industry have taken on new jobs during the recession of the pandemic, but Ariel's job is potentially game-changing. Ariel works for the 2020 Census Department (go to www.2020census.gov and you can fill it out online). Ariel spends her days knocking on doors in an attempt to find out more about what the individuals in a certain community need in order to better themselves. Sometimes people answer. Sometimes assholes like me duck behind the couch and loudly whisper to their children to be quiet and pretend no one is home. (What, like you never pulled that shit?) The thing is, the results of the 2020 Census are as important as the results of the 2020 election. Perhaps even more so. (Disclaimer: You should get off your ass and vote, I am by no means excusing you from November 3rd) Data collected from the 2020 Census is used to determine the number of people in a given community, the most important needs of that community, and therefore how government money should be allotted for supplemental aid such as improvements for schools, roads, healthcare, Medicaid, educational programs such as Head Start, mental health services, and nutrition assistance programs. These services are essential for the survival of some of the disenfranchised or impoverished communities. But, without the information from the census, we lack the numbers to convince the government to spend the money. Equally important, population determines the the number of seats each state is allotted within the House of Representatives. And that can clearly be a game changer. Please, please, please spread the word about participating in the 2020 census. 56:45Season Two, Episode 31: Mean Girls Need Not Apply With Felicia Madison On March 16, 2020 Felicia Madison premiered her one-woman show, The Miserable Mrs. Madison. It seems like it would be a tough gig to make a pretty, privileged, well-educated, funny white woman appear likable and relatable -- and yet, Felicia does easily, while simultaneously exploring the touching relationship with her father and his loss that came too soon. The timing of the release could have been better, but this show is just the tip of the iceberg for Felicia's career. Have a listen as Felicia and I discuss comedy in a world that needs political correctness, the need for women to help raise up and mentor other women, and why mental health has nothing to do with money. Felicia is the host of the MTNesters Podcast, and coordinates the F Comedy Club (FComedyClub.com) that provides open mic opportunities and mentorship for comedians at all levels (currently online due to pandemic). In a world where words seem to matter more than intentions, we all need to take a pause and consider the complexity of mental health. Comedians are clearly either thriving or drowning during this pandemic, and although Jim says he is “lucky” enough to be doing well, the truth is simply that he has spent years honing his craft of self-deprecation, honesty, and coming off as a deep-thinking dickhead. 37:29Season 2, Episode 15: I recorded this episode with Dr. Alisa Hurwitz, or as she is better known by her fans, Dr. Drama. We discussed microagressions and the subjectivity of them. This morning I woke up to a lovely, rageful, non-sensical debate on my neighborhood facebook group. It. Was. Harsh. Those who commented seemed to dance around the ideas of racism and anti-semitism and bigotry -- psst, there is a word that means to judge someone by their religion, and it is bigotry. Your welcome. Microaggressions are perceived slights against a marginalized group. My issue with this definition is that in psychology, much research has been done to examine the Fundamental Attribution Error. Essentially, if you are mean to me, I assume that you are a mean person. If I am mean to you, I expect you to intuit that I am having a bad day. Alisa and I ended up failing to come to an agreement other than the fact that few people intend on knowingly hurting someone by committing a microaggression, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to be more sensitive with our words and actions. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/neuroticnourishment/support…

1:16:34As most of us wade through the confusion and chaos of Covid-19, there are men, women, and children out there who are saddled with an additional struggle. From February to March reports of domestic violence increased 20% and Google searches for those looking for help dealing with domestic violence increased 75%. This episode was recorded many months ago, but there seems no better time to share my conversation with Josie Naikoi about how she managed to get the courage and the means to leave an abusive relationship and find her way to a better life. Josie is a licensed nutritionist and Instagram fitspo, as well as the host of the podcast, You Can Do Better, Bitch! 34:00Season 2, Episode 12: I begged, pleaded, and stalked the fantastically beautiful, brilliant, and neurotic host of The Alarmist, Rebecca Delgado Smith, into coming on the podcast in an attempt to destigmatize mental health. (Trust me, my stalking made this episode kinda awkward...) Rebecca uses her own anxiety, or catastrophizing, as fuel for her podcast as she examines past tragedies and who is to blame. That was over a month ago. And now...well, what a long, strange trip it has been. I suggest you listen to this episode, and to The Alarmist Podcast, and keep in mind that we have been through worse in the past, and there will be worse in the future. Today's insanity will eventually lead to a new normal for tomorrow. I know, I know, we are all struggling through this pandemic. I feel like I'm on a friggin' strugglebus, trust me. Some days I forget to eat. Many more days I have eaten twelve meals by 10:30 AM. This is life for now. This is grief. This is anxiety. This is now. This episode is important for now. This episode is important because we have gotten through shit before, and we will get through shit again. This pandemic will pass. 52:29Season 2, Episode 10: I specifically chose to air this episode this week, in honor of my upcoming book, Ten Steps To Finding Happy, and with the hopes of raising awareness of teen suicide prevention and the need to destigmatize mental health #10StepsEndTheStigma. Unfortunately, this whole pandemic pain-in-the-ass crushed my dreams. Instead, we will be doing a virtual book launch on March 20th starting at 3 PM EST in the FB group Finding Happy. Aloise blew me away when she suggested that maybe, somehow, on a deep, spiritual level, we chose our parents. We chose our parents to work through something we need to get to the next level of higher being. Sometimes your mess is your message, she suggested. And damn, it hit me hard. In this episode we talk about suicide, mental illness, and why we got saddled with the burden we did, and why we are the perfect people to carry that burden. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/neuroticnourishment/support…

1:00:30Season 2, Episode 9: The difference in men who seek therapy and women who seek therapy is staggering. And yet...when a man loses his shit, it usually comes which much more dire consequences. So why won't men seek mental help? In today's conversation I talk to Dr. John Schinnerer, who is just as much of a research dork as I am, has the same potty mouth I do, and was the psychological consultant for the Pixar movie "Inside Out." (That's kinda the coolest part, no?) Dr. John also has his own podcast, The Evolved Caveman, and specializes in working with men who excel in every aspect of their life -- except the ability to form solid, healthy, interpersonal relationships. It's trademarked, bitches! At the time of this interview, Allie was uber pregnant with her second child, but she was a real trouper. Allie is far braver than I am, as she chose to do this whole child-bearing thing without a partner. Twice. There is nothing that says love more than the love of a mother for a child -- especially during a temper tantrum. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/neuroticnourishment/support…

Season 2, Episode 5: Welcome to February, lovely listeners! This month's episodes are going to be devoted to love, lust, and everything in between. And why not start the month with a great big bang! I thought about stealing the title of Paige Fieldstead's book, "Confessions From Your Fat Friend," but the truth is, Paige is so much more than anyone's fat friend. She is smart and funny and brave and bold and doing her best to Mom and work and live her dream. Just like the rest of us. Her book is beautiful. Her book makes you think. 43:57Four years ago today, Isabella Risinger died just before her first Christmas, just before her first birthday. Isabella was born with Trisomy 18 and her death was the result of complications from this genetic abnormality. In today's episode of Neurotic Nourishment I interview Isabella's mother, Kristina Walling Risinger, about how to move forward with life after such a devastating loss. Moving on seems nearly impossible, but Kristina credits her faith in God, the support of her husband and community, and her desire to help others as the key elements that helped her to *move forward* rather than "move on." This episode was tough to record and may be uncomfortable to listen to. But listen to it. It's worth it. Kristina is a grief counselor, and a blogger at justbreathe-mama.com. Her website is kristinarisinger.com and today, on the anniversary of Isabella's death, Kristina has launched her own podcast, Faith Breathed Hope.
