Mike and Dan react to the news that Lou Lamoriello has been let go by the Islanders and examine his legacy and possible replacements. Lamoriello was far from perfect as a general manager. He operated under his own set of old school rules and made mistakes in service of loyalty to players rather than making changes that would advance the team towards a Stanley Cup. But The Lou Lamoriello Experience is one we'll never forget, and it gave us some of the best seasons of our lives. We trusted Lou in ways we have rarely trusted anyone in this franchise and while the organization needs a change of direction, we'll miss certain things about him. They don't make them like Lou any more. In the second half, we look at some possible replacements, none of whom will probably happen. From old veterans to first timers to data nerds to lifes of the party, there's a wide range of choices that Islanders Operating Partner John Collins can make. And it's scary thinking about who that might be. But we're on the ride for the duration. To support Brian Compton in the Walk MS: Long Island 2025 on May 17, click here . Subscribe to our Patreon! Mike and Dan recap the last games of the Islanders season, pay tribute to Matt Martin and look ahead at an uncertain (and unannounced) future. With two final wet farts, this depressing campaign finally came to an end. The players barely looked like they cared although at least one passed the starting goalie on the goal scoring list. The best parts of both were the opposing teams lining up to say goodbye to Martin, who has been a warrior for years and embodied what being an Islander meant better than almost anyone. The respect shown to him puts his career and contributions in great perspective for those of us outside the locker room. In the second half, we discuss the players' exit interviews with media that were short on information but occasionally full of emotion. We don't expect getting either from any of the team's actual decision makers, who will probably once again take their sweet time before saying anything. This team has a lot of problems to fix, and we have to hope they're working in silence to fix them. Because if not, we're already looking at another long but early season next year. Along with podcaster and Canucks fan Ryan Schaap, Mike and Dan learn about Pius Suter, who attended a training camp with the Islanders before starting a productive NHL career for three other teams. Suter came over from his native Switzerland to try the NHL on for size and attended camps for both the Senators and Islanders before finally signing a contract with the Red Wings. After two solid years in Detroit and one in Chicago, he settled in Vancouver, where he's become a valued utility player. Ryan tells us how much Suter means to the team, other players he's reminiscent of and what life is like for Canucks fans during a trying, drama-filled season like this one. We also talk about other "Training Camp All Stars," like Miks Indrasis and Jan Kovar who circled the Islanders but never quite landed. Along the way, we chat about other weird Islanders-Canucks connections and why Cliff Ronning remains awesome. Thanks again to Ryan for coming on. Mike and Dan recap a week with three embarrassing losses that finally led to the Islanders' official elimination from playoff contention. After a wild 7-6 OT loss in Nashville, a butt whipping at home to the Rangers and a goofy shootout loss in Philadelphia, a season in which no one had any fun was put out of its misery. The players look mad, the coach thinks everyone played well and nothing has been done to show fans that this is not acceptable. The hamster wheel we've been on for four years continues to spin, which has us almost nostalgic for other failed seasons we thought were worse than they actually were. The two games left on the schedule don't matter, but might have some small amounts of joy for someone. Right now, the only thing we can all enjoy is a new dumpster fire sparking up inside Madison Square Garden, started by a former Islander who has made his displeasure with his new team public in a way he didn't expect. He joins a list of current and ex-Rangers in open revolt against a GM who was once praised for having a cutthroat countenance but now looks like he's wearing clown shoes. Mike and Dan examine the Islanders' role in Alex Ovechkin's record-setting day and Anthony Duclair's time off. By beating the Capitals and Wild, the team remains mathematically alive for a playoff berth while realistically out of it. But the big story on Sunday (and for the rest of time) was Ovechkin passing Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all time leader in goals. The Islanders showed a great deal of class during the extra-long in-game ceremony even if the game's real star - two goal scorer Marc Gatcomb - wasn't given his proper due. We also discuss the decision to let Duclair take some time off following Tuesday's dismal loss to Tampa Bay, and how it's not nearly the PR disaster a lot of people are making it out to be. In the second half, we look ahead at four winnable game that might not matter and enjoy a second edition of The Michael Russo Mysteries all about how catastrophic the Wild's loss to the Islanders was, which is just an extra treat. Joined again by friend Tyler Gildin, we remember Tom Chorske, a useful player and ace penalty killer who gave both an undermanned Islanders team and a kids summer camp some important depth. Chorske came from a Cup winning organization in New Jersey and played on some blossoming Senators teams before landing on The Island via waivers. The 1997-98 Islanders had all the makings of a playoff team, except they didn't. But they came closer than any team of that era and employed some damn good players, including Chorske. By early the next season, he was gone in a minor trade. But in the short time he was on Long Island, he somehow made a stop at a kids' summer camp, where he made an impression on a young Tyler (who might have been the only kid there who knew who he was). We’re confident that Chorske, who has gone on to do work on TV and in the private sector, no doubt totally remembers this (because it might have ruined his life). Subscribe to our Patreon! Mike and Dan talk about bad calls and blown games as the Islanders erase their recent charge towards the playoffs. In the first of four losses this week, the Islanders were the victims of an egregiously bad no goal decision but did themselves no favors by once again playing like assholes for the two periods before and overtime and shootout periods after it. They followed that up with an inexcusable performance against another desperate playoff team, then hit the road for two losses in places they never win. It was a disastrous week for fans but according to the players, broadcasters and coach, they played great and just didn't get the results. That didn't fly in November and it's not flying in March. In the second half, we look at the three difficult games ahead this week (with one potentially historic one) and finish with a special Western Canadian version of Master Leaf Theatre that also managed to drag the Islanders as well. Frankly, they deserve the insults. To support Brian Compton in the Walk MS: Long Island 2025 on May 17, click here . Subscribe to our Patreon! Mike and Dan discuss the Islanders' latest point streak and unlikely reappearance in the Eastern Conference playoff race. With a makeshift lineup full of forgotten players and total nobodies, the Islanders have risen from the ashes through hard work and (finally) a little luck. They came from behind to beat the Penguins, toppled the Habs in overtime (not that anyone from Montreal even noticed them) and gave away a point to Calgary while not playing their best. It's a feel good story that only we're paying attention to and is still also frustrating to watch unfold. It continues this week with a huge game against Columbus, a game against a Western Conference counterpart in Vancouver and then a rough back-to-back in Tampa and Raleigh. More points means fighting another day. Lost points might mean game over but with this season, who knows. We also talk about the newest Islanders signee - Colorado College forward Gleb Veremyev - and how the once bereft farm system suddenly looks a little better (even while Bridgeport remains terrible). With author Greg Prato, Mike and Dan travel back to the Islanders' inaugural 1972 season to learn about Arnie Brown, a former Ranger who did not enjoy his short stay on Long Island. The original Islanders were worse than bad. They were, at the time, the least successful team in NHL history. When he acquired the 31-year-old Brown in October of 1972, Bill Torrey was probably looking for a veteran leader and someone who knew how to play defense. What he got was a combative malcontent who openly wanted to be traded and was ready to play the heel, often to hilarious ends. But Brown's eventual trade months later led to the acquisition of not one but two Islanders legends - one four decades later. Prato tells us about his indispensable book "Dynasty: The Oral History of the New York Islanders, 1972-84" as well as his latest, "Hapless Islanders: The Story Behind the New York Islanders' Infamous 1972-73 Season" and some of the stories surrounding that season. Along the way we discuss names like Ernie Hicke, Brian "Spinner" Spencer, Denis DeJordy and...uh... Tony Orlando? It's a wild ride in the Wayback Machine. Thanks again to Greg for coming on. Order "Hapless Islanders" from Amazon today and also pick up a copy of "Dynasty" if you don't already have it. And check out his music writing at Allmusic.com and Guitar.com . Mike and Dan don't know how to feel about the Islanders taking three points from last year's Stanley Cup finalists in this very weird season. In playing Edmonton tough before losing in overtime and beating the Cup champion Panthers, the Islanders showed a level of grit and skill they could have used in November instead of in March where they're still a longshot to make the playoffs. Performances by Noah Dobson, Pierre Engvall and Max Tsyplakov remind us of just how unreliable some players can be when they're counted on the most. But the games were enjoyable in the moment, especially if you flew from Poland to watch one. In the second half, they look ahead towards some games that could (once again) get them closer to the playoffs (but probably won't) and welcome back old favorite, Master Leaf Theatre. This time, the Leafs writers are distraught over bad coaching, losing a large locker room voice and possibly Mitch Marner. At least one shirtless guy is having fun (as are we). Mike and Dan put as much effort into recapping the Islanders' first two post-trade deadline games as the players put into playing them. Instead, they spend more time lamenting just how old, slow, sloppy and depressing the team looked in both, one of which was an actual win. One night after Ilya Sorokin stole two points in San Jose, the Islanders slept through a game against the Ducks that was as sad as it was boring. If this roster still wants to make the playoffs without Brock Nelson, they sure as hell didn't look like it. But according to GM Lou Lamoriello in an illuminating West Coast press availability, that's exactly what the plan is. Lamoriello knows his team needs to get younger and faster, but still wanted to bring back Nelson and Kyle Palmieri. He promised bigger moves this summer, but that's a song we've heard before. While the sentiment is right, the future is as muddy as ever. We also look ahead at the final California game and two home dates that follow, and discuss another trade that didn't happen that we hope derails a couple of other teams' seasons. Mike and Dan analyze the Islanders' trade deadline moves and non-moves and how they will impact the team on and off the ice. With the trade of Brock Nelson to Colorado just after midnight on deadline day for a conditional first round pick and prospect Calum Ritchie, the Islanders waved goodbye to their most consistent forward of this era. Removing his presence from the team leaves a big hole that current players, ex-players, media and fans will all feel. While it was the right move and the pieces extracted are highly rated, it will be weird seeing the Islanders play without one of the longtime "Uncles." In the second half, we discuss the deadline's biggest non-move, which was the keeping and expected contract extension of Kyle Palmieri. The Long Island native has had some huge moments and wants to stay at what sounds like a palatable price. But it raises fears that next season's team will be more of the same. However, having not just veterans but veteran Islanders in the room to guide the next generation does have some value. With some extra special thanks to Warren Zevon . Subscribe to our Patreon! Along with comic book writer and owner of many weird Islanders jerseys Keith Dallas, Mike and Dan remember defenseman Mike Mottau, whose short stint on Long Island was also very eventful. After winning a Hobey Baker Award at Boston College and playing for the Rangers, Flames and Devils, Mottau washed ashore as a free agent, looking to help the young Islanders blueline. What followed were injuries and many losses, many of which Mottau was helpless to stop. His most notable accomplishments over his two seasons were punching one Isles nemesis and getting clowned by another after a legendarily poor decision on the ice. Mottau was eventually dealt to his hometown Bruins - along with another Islanders villain - at the trade deadline, bringing the whole odd era to a close. Keith tells us his memories of Mottau's time, the joys of being a season ticket holder when a team is bad and the many-layered tale of how he came to own an actual game-worn Mike Mottau jersey. A perfect appetizer for today's trade deadline main course. Subscribe to our Patreon! Members get ad-free episodes of the shows, bonus podcasts, written posts and much more. It's trade deadline week and after three more weird games in a weird season of a weird era, we still have no idea who the Islanders are or what they'll do. They started with a home ice faceplant against the Rangers - predicted by Mike - before stealing two points in Boston. Then they beat the Predators - predicted by Dan - which started as a laugher and became oddly tense. The main character in all of them was Ilya Sorokin, who went from being the goat on Tuesday to being an unlikely goalscorer on Saturday, and continues to be an occasionally flaky, mysterious dude who can also be one of the best goalies in the NHL. In the second half, we look towards the next two games, which might be the true final contests of the Islanders' regular season. It all depends on how they handle the trade deadline, which at this point is anyone's guess. They could have a completely different roster when they play in San Jose next Saturday, or be exactly the same after sitting the deadline out and keeping everyone. It's a strange spot to be in - and totally inline with how this version of the Islanders conducts its business. At least we know what the professional liars will say either way. That's all we've got.
